- ElGanyan, on 08/31/2008, -0/+6I would normally scoff at an idea or claim that something like this could be a viable source of income but I had a roommate a few years back that was putting herself through college and travelling (she was doing a year abroad in Spain at the time) by playing online poker. After one particularly long 8 hour session she ecstatically appeared in my room to let me know she had just come in second place for some large online tournament. If I recall the prize money was something like $10,000 - $15,000US. Brix were shat.
- inactive, on 08/31/2008, -0/+6Although illegal in the United States, it ’s quite possible to earn an income playing poker online almost everywhere else in the world, or lose your money, belongings, savings, and kidneys.
- novoare, on 08/31/2008, -0/+4I'm a big fan of any legal job that will get people out of cubicles and on the road. For people who know how to play poker, taking the game online might not be a bad option for funding their travels.
- stevebede, on 08/31/2008, -0/+3Sure, some people might make good money playing poker. I'd think it's only a small fraction who profit enough, and consistently, to be able to rely on it for income though. And it sure would suck to lose your money on poker and find yourself stuck in the jungles of Borneo or something..
- davidmiller72, on 08/31/2008, -0/+3yeah, like elGanyan said--I met this kid who had apartments all over the country from poker. he was some kind of madman, would lock himself in a room and just play like 60-80 hands at a time or something. ..
- SetOverSet, on 09/01/2008, -0/+2Online Poker IS NOT ILLEGAL IN THE US. Buried as innaccrute. It is illegal in a few states.
- whoreable, on 08/31/2008, -0/+2Illegal? Since when?
- rucksack, on 08/31/2008, -0/+2I think the article did a good job of laying out the pros and cons of playing online poker for a living. I especially like the last piece of advice, though, that making money isn't always the most important part of any job. It might be possible to make a living playing online poker, but it's probably not the healthiest or most rewarding of professions.
- Evazan21, on 09/01/2008, -0/+1Not true. The unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act did not prohibit using real money to play online poker. The law was aimed at financial institutions and said that they can no longer transfer money to gambling sites. There is no law against gambling online in America.
- Arotron, on 09/01/2008, -0/+1See my post below -- it's been technically illegal in the United States since October 2006. Doesn't mean you can't do it, though.
- ptloutlaw, on 09/01/2008, -0/+1This sounds about right to me. I know two people who had success with online poker as a primary source of income. One did alright for himself and the other raked in some serious skrill.
- bigp3rm, on 08/31/2008, -1/+2A lot of these people use Bots to beat you. You have been warned.
- damack, on 08/31/2008, -0/+1I had a similar experience in college my roomy used to play poker and bring in a lot of money playing over the hours but she was exceptionally good too and had some bad days as well.
It requires a lot of mental discipline because it can be addicting but it can also prove to be a great way to fund yourself if your good at it. - Arotron, on 09/01/2008, -0/+1Since when has online poker been illegal in the U.S.? Since 2006, when President Bush approved the SAFE Ports Act, which included an article known as the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006. It effectively prohibits using real money to play online poker in the U.S., although other forms of gambling like lotteries and betting on horse races are still allowed. The result seems to be that publicly traded poker companies have closed up their U.S. operations, but some privately-held companies continue to operate there. So it is possible to play poker in the U.S., and there are ongoing efforts to lift the ban, but it is *technically* against the law.
- ahalbert, on 08/31/2008, -1/+1the return of MrBabyMan.....it's been a while
- deva14, on 08/31/2008, -1/+1I thought it was great how the article didn't shy away from the cons, and wasn't over the moon about the pros, either. A good, solid round-up of the options and what it really means. Made me wish I had a clue how to play!
- iceman0113, on 08/31/2008, -1/+1"On the other hand, there’s nothing quite like the thrill of turning over pocket aces." and then have it cracked by a straight, flush, and any other hand. Great starting hand if you know how to push; otherwise, a ***** hand once the flop comes out and nothing is in your favor.
- chloekitten, on 09/01/2008, -0/+0This article gives a good, balanced perspective. I thought it might be a bit of a propaganda piece, but it really lays out the pros and cons. I won ten bucks playing poker online once, but I don't have the time or patience to really win big. When I've played in big tournaments I've always thrown it in halfway through because I've just had enough!
