- dkapuchino, on 08/22/2008, -1/+2060 THB = lunch.
400 THB = an airconditioned room with a bed and hot shower
400 THB = Thai Massage.
2000 THB = Thai Massage + Happy ending. - DreKor, on 08/22/2008, -2/+16Of course you can backpack through SE Asia on $20/day! Most people LIVE THERE on less than $20/MONTH!
- TheMime, on 08/22/2008, -2/+15Realizing that your masseuse used to be a man - Priceless
- filthwizard, on 08/22/2008, -1/+12You can get by on a lot less if you really want, especially if you spend time in Cambodia and Lao where everything from meals to accommodation seemed to be $1
- the42ndpotato, on 08/22/2008, -2/+13It's not as good as hitchhiking round the universe for less than 20 Altarian dollars a day though
- BlockedUser, on 08/22/2008, -0/+11Hey you're going way over budget. Lunch is way over rated...
- rjsprague, on 08/21/2008, -2/+13I need to do this. Damn college is expensive.
- xeno439, on 08/22/2008, -0/+8You guys are more worried about the clap than the fact that the ladyboy has a penis?
- filthwizard, on 08/22/2008, -0/+8(admittedly it was far from 5-star quality)
- dkapuchino, on 08/22/2008, -0/+8Until you step into the Siam Paragon mall, and get shocked by how clean everything is.
- ledsam, on 08/22/2008, -1/+8Okay, you stay home and be scared, the rest of the world will go have some fun.
- LeviTheSmith, on 08/22/2008, -0/+7Public showers at the beach?
- rpad, on 08/22/2008, -0/+7The author claims "Peak season: April to August" for Thailand. That's utter garbage. That's when Thailand gets its hottest temperatures and heaviest rains. Aside from Songkran in April (fun water fights), this is pretty much the worst time to go.
- Aliwalla, on 08/22/2008, -1/+7$20 a day is actually kind of expensive for that part of the world.
- RockBandit, on 08/22/2008, -1/+7Awesome. This is probably next on my list of places to go. Just did a stint in Europe earlier this summer. Good grief was that expensive! (Of course, it doesn't help that the U.S. dollar is so pathetic right now).
- ledsam, on 08/22/2008, -0/+5You can get a good Thai massage in Bangkok for 180B easy.
- dkapuchino, on 08/22/2008, -1/+6Actually, they feed you to their pets (or live stock) in Canada.
They kidnap and muder tourists in the US:

The people of Thailand, Lao, Cambodia, Myanmar however, are some of the most welcoming in the world.
Nothing beats the experience of getting lost and stuck in the middle of small Asian village on your motorcycle, when a buddhist monk tries to help you out, and sends a 10 year old kid to run home and bring you a liter of gas in an old whisky bottle. - punkass1977, on 08/22/2008, -0/+5If you're going to comment with a smug attitude...oh wait, you seem to have a pretty good handle on that.
- BlockedUser, on 08/22/2008, -0/+520.00 USD = 679.091 THB
- rowjimmy, on 08/22/2008, -0/+5so you've never been to south-east asia, i take it?
you certainly aren't going to get a business-class hotel, but you can find private, clean rooms with running water, etc for dirt cheap along the beaches all over south-east asia. in major cities, i'd pay more - for safety's sake and whatnot - but if you don't travel like a tourist, it doesn't cost you as much as the all-inclusive "only see white people at sandals!" vacation would - dkapuchino, on 08/22/2008, -0/+5Oh, the things that go on in his mother's basement..
- asnider, on 08/22/2008, -0/+4How? My rent alone works out to about $25 a day. I'm in Canada, but the US and Canada are similar enough that I think the comparison is fair.
- Aeric, on 08/22/2008, -7/+11I live on less than 20 bucks a day in America.
- alankem, on 08/22/2008, -5/+9Come to Cambodia if your overweight and cheap. Being big boned is a sign of wealth and power and you'll have woman throwing themselves at you. You'll get the happy ending if you bring them to get 3 dollar lobster dinner.
- rowjimmy, on 08/22/2008, -0/+4this $20 a day includes fairly nice lodging. you can do it way cheaper if you are with a few people & don't mind sleeping outdoors/in ***** hostel-type places/etc. who needs to shower but every few days?
- xkorbin, on 08/22/2008, -3/+7So long and thanks for all the fish. RIP.
Sorry, offtopic, just was reminded of Adams. - championchap, on 08/22/2008, -0/+4In a hot country?
I sweat like Lee Evans.. I need to change clothes 3 times a day to avoid smelling like mould! - rpad, on 08/22/2008, -0/+4There are tons of lovely places in Bangkok that are very clean. You clearly did not explore the city very well.
- ncc74656m, on 08/22/2008, -0/+4Just hope nobody's hosting a deaf-mute conference.
- dkapuchino, on 08/22/2008, -0/+3Gotta love the backpackers that think they're somehow better than others because they can save 2 bucks a day by bargaining for half an hour.
- StinkyGrinch, on 08/22/2008, -1/+4How much are the hookers?
- CRCulver, on 08/22/2008, -0/+3A lot of people travel not just as "vacation" but as lifestyle. Over the past ten years I've watched many of my friends, even people from less economically developed places like Eastern Europe and North Africa, luckily find some small but dependable source of income and then travel for 10 or 11 months a year. I hope to join them after I finish my university studies. For this group, tips like the article here may be useful. North Americans, however, are conspicuously absent from these circles. Most of the friends I keep in touch with from my childhood in the US are now trapped in dead-end jobs. I really wonder what's going on there.
FWIW though, I travel about 8 months of the year, and my daily budget is 5 to 7 euro a day. I rarely pay for accomodation (hospitality associations or camping instead) or transportation (I love hitchhiking). I was in SE Asia last year, and the budget of $20 offered here is way more than you need if you stay with locals. - inactive, on 08/22/2008, -1/+4How much do you ordinarily pay for them?
- sodade, on 08/22/2008, -0/+3How can anyone actually like humidity? That just doesn't compute.
- Aeric, on 08/22/2008, -1/+3My apartment costs $350 a month, with about $3 a day on bills and a few bucks a day on food. No I don't live off the government, I pay taxes, have a full time job, and I'm a full time student. I also support your mother with $5 every once in a while when I'm bored and horny.
- e2superman, on 08/22/2008, -0/+2Constant rain meaning weather similar to central and south Florida. I am from there and it amazes me when people come to visit us on vacation during their summer trips (our rainy season). Just like in FL Thailand has more ideal (so to speak) months like you said. Then again I certainly do not mind some rain and humidity but maybe I am in the minority.
- binaryloop, on 08/23/2008, -0/+2Where the hell do you live... BFE Nebraska?!?! It's got to be in the middle of nowhere. In Southern California rent on a studio apartment starts at about $1300 a month.
- monkeyrun, on 08/22/2008, -1/+3I see you want STDs for free.
- arobar, on 08/22/2008, -2/+4Those people you just ragged on for being "smelly", "hobos", "dirty", etc? Yeah, we think just as lowly of you as you do us. We have fun doing this. Just because you don't doesn't make what you do better. Everyone has fun in their own way. Take off your blinders.
- rpad, on 08/22/2008, -0/+2Wow...where to begin?
- 250 for each meal? Perhaps if you only eat Western food.
- 2,000 for a hotel is also too high.
- Comparing Holiday Inn to Marriott is silly.
- Beer is 120 baht if you eat at rip-off Western restaurants. You can easily find Heineken for under 100 baht or Beer Chang/Tiger for under 70. - treas, on 08/22/2008, -0/+2So sad that it should to come to this.
- datastorageguy, on 08/22/2008, -2/+4$15 of those dollars undoubtedly come from the taxes deducted from my paycheck.
- b8man99, on 08/23/2008, -0/+2The lonely planet thorn tree is still an awesome forum for more specific info on traveling around this part of the world.
If you wanted to spend 5 dollars a day it's still possible - it just means you do nothing. Spend a little bit more here and you have a much much better time. - ZackScott, on 08/22/2008, -2/+4I bet this only cost $5 a day back in 2000. But I'll only bet $5 of today's money, not $5 of 2000's money.
- e2superman, on 08/22/2008, -0/+2You are right on the water. I even brush my teeth with bottled water in Thailand. I had the runs my first week here. Not fun... not fun...
- fornls, on 02/09/2009, -0/+1Need to backpack some time to see Angkor Wat temple!
- treas, on 08/23/2008, -0/+1Humidity reminds me of home, home is comforting.
Humidity is comforting. - inactive, on 08/22/2008, -1/+2Partying in Bangkok on 20 dollars a day?
I guess if you want to call 10 Beer Chang a bowl of rice and some stick food partying its possible. - dkapuchino, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1I've been able to travel in Thailand for way way less, and I'm pretty sure I've experienced it much more than the ordinary "stay at a hotel, eat only pizzas and mcdonalds type of tourist".
