- DairyCreamer, on 07/03/2009, -2/+69Go Southwest!
- Xwhy, on 07/03/2009, -2/+49Note that the "unaccompanied minor" fee doesn't actually guarantee that your minor will arrive at the correct destination or even at an airport in the correct state.
- wannaBdug, on 07/02/2009, -1/+26What's next having to pay for using the toilet?
- Tubal22, on 07/03/2009, -0/+20That's what I was thinking. But on the left of the chart, they give them 3 stars, only "satisfactory". What gives?
- merky1, on 07/03/2009, -2/+19Too bad there isn't a surcharge for sober, competent pilots.
- Bullislander05, on 07/03/2009, -1/+18It's because southwest is one of the cheaper airlines to fly. They don't provide the same quality (if any) of food and entertainment on flights. But if you want to save a buck go go southwest. :)
- cuecat, on 07/03/2009, -1/+16You should work for the airline industry!

"Faced with an annual loss for the first time in two decades, Ryanair, the European budget airline, confirmed on Tuesday that it plans to start charging passengers for the luxury of using the toilet on its jets." - DivisibleByZero, on 07/03/2009, -1/+14I'm not sure any of that counts as a "hidden fee". It's not like they're forcing you to pay for the in-flight wifi.
- dsmx, on 07/03/2009, -0/+12Indeed, a good high speed rail network is fantastic.
As an example my local train stations has a pub on it, when I take the train to the nearest high speed rail station (about 20 minutes away by train, 30 minutes by car) there's another huge bar at that station. Then once you stagger onto the train you throw your luggage into the rack then head to the bar car to get something to drink and/or eat. Then sit there in a drunken stupor for the whole 2 hours and 30 minutes or so it takes to get to London from Preston. Then you just get off the train and walk out the station.
Compare that to the immense stupidity of the whole airport experience and it's easy to see why if you invest In a decent high speed rail network you will get a lot of people using it. The only people who would complain are the airlines. - Fixhotep, on 07/03/2009, -1/+13fuel was just an excuse to do something they've wanted to do for a long time. we all knew they wouldn't lower prices once fuel went back down.
- durruticolumn, on 09/18/2009, -2/+12
This is why I support high speed rail. - StigNordas, on 07/03/2009, -4/+14Fuel is cheap again, time to repeal some of these!
- Chewie67, on 07/03/2009, -2/+10SouthWest is our first choice when our family flies. They're the most reasonable.
They even gave my wife a refund 3 months after we purchased our tickets because the published fare had dropped.
Can't ask for much better. - SkinnyPuppy, on 07/03/2009, -0/+7Adults can barely get themselves to the airport and to correct plane on time. What makes you think children will?
- lougoose, on 07/03/2009, -0/+7Not only are they not cheating you with extra fees, their employees are HILARIOUS.
Once we were flying back home, and at security (Southwest, not TSA), they said "have a great flight to Alaska!" Obviously we were surprised, considering home is Chicago. This went on for a good five minutes, holding up the rest of the security line.
Turn out is was April 1st, and they let us go into a security line that just opened (so we were first). It was awesome. - sexybobo, on 07/03/2009, -0/+7Southwest is also the only airline currently making a profit while the rest of them are needing to be bailed out by the government
http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/05/24/southwest ...
They also had some one try to hijack a southwest flight 3 years ago and the dude was beaten so bad by other passengers he died before they landed. - austria, on 07/03/2009, -1/+6Can someone explain why Southwest got only 3 stars? They beat JetBlue, Frontier and Midwest in every category yet are ranked lower? Someone from the airline industry must have compiled these rankings...
- joculator, on 07/03/2009, -0/+5That's why I refuse to fly...and having no money.
- dsmx, on 07/03/2009, -0/+5That's because there aren't any sober pilots.
- centran, on 07/03/2009, -0/+5That fee is because someone meets them at security and takes them to the gate. Then they bring them to baggage claim at the destination.
If your kid is a teen and is familiar with the airports then don't bother setting that service up. - biggestprick, on 07/03/2009, -1/+5If you are a fat ass, why don't you lose some weight? That way you wouldn't have to pay for two seats.
- sexybobo, on 07/03/2009, -0/+4I don't want to spend a couple days on a train to get some where i can fly to in 4 hours.
- Jrr6415sun, on 07/03/2009, -0/+4there's a reason they can afford to not charge fees...
- FauOz, on 07/03/2009, -3/+7SOUTHWEST AIRLINES IS KING! IMHO never late and never a bad flight and never optional charges. REAL PEOPLE when you call on the phone....Priceless
Thanks Southwest Airlines Philly departures
www.southwest.com - Kinneas12, on 07/03/2009, -0/+4What about Virgin America? Please enlighten a Canadian today!
- darkeagle5601, on 07/03/2009, -1/+4This chart does not show the price of the plane ticket itself. I know Delta and AA had the best prices available for my upcoming flight, so there's more hidden fees. Then again, I'm only paying $15 more because I don't need the extra crap.
Southwest is an exception however. They usually have decent prices and few hidden fees. - supermanly, on 07/03/2009, -0/+3@icndvl
Cool story bro - keithwired, on 07/03/2009, -1/+4Yes while it seems ridiculus to charge for the toilet, the guy's reasoning is at least believable. He says that the average flight time for a Ryanair flight is just 1 hour, and yet they have 3 toilets on the aircraft. Who boards a one hour flight on the verge of bladder explosion or colon rupture? And even if you didn't have to go before you got on and mid-flight you suddenly have to go, I think you can manage to hold it for what 30-40 minutes?
It's not as bad as it seems. - Leminnes, on 07/03/2009, -0/+3Do you mean... right of the chart? Because the star ratings are on the right...
- rick2k, on 07/03/2009, -0/+3Dont digg this guy down, its true.... Ryanair is just strange.
Cant complain though why they fly you places for pennies.. - icndvl, on 07/03/2009, -0/+3Some kids are smarter then most adults. I traveled the world alone at 11, true story.
- Jrr6415sun, on 07/03/2009, -1/+4airlines purchase fuel months or years in advance.. I think they're still paying high prices because of that.
- Fixhotep, on 07/03/2009, -1/+3I don't want to defend the airlines, but meh... something tells me that "ground crew, pilots and flight attendants" and others come to more than $3200... plus, you know, the whole having to buy and maintain airplanes and rent terminals...
- mibi, on 07/03/2009, -0/+2***** on 10% of the audience? I gotta see that graphic.
- FuZi0nDET, on 07/03/2009, -1/+3Honestly, I was expecting to see the true hidden fees. Those are the ones that are the ones that are always added on after you lock in a fair. I've always thought that the bulk of those were b/s. The only fee on that list that irks me is the bag fee. Fees to change flights suck too. I primarialy fly Delta and have flown a number of the air lines on that list. My experiences with Delta have thus far been far above the best. I'll continue flying Delta as long as their flights are reasonably priced to that of other carriers.
- raybury, on 07/03/2009, -1/+3An airline ticket should include reasonable checked bagged privileges. Figure out what 99% of people were already doing -- probably no more than two pieces with a combined weight of less than 50 pounds -- and use that as your built-in baggage allowance. Commuter flights and other short-hauls, where long stays at the destination would probably call for driving, can allow for less.
- gl77, on 07/03/2009, -0/+2because i *like* being a fat ass.
- mfc5200, on 07/03/2009, -0/+2U.S. Airways = worst airline in the country. ***** them.
- mibi, on 07/03/2009, -2/+4Can we stop referring to tables as 'infographics' please.
- dsmx, on 07/04/2009, -0/+1sadly airports make money, whereas high speed rail doesn't.
- 1moretime, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1USA Today did a report on this a year ago. Southwest was getting gas much cheaper than anyone at the time. Over a dollar a gallon cheaper then the next closest airline!
- sexybobo, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1Southwest has made a profit every year since it was formed.
- rdoger6424, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1I've had pretty bad delays on Southwest. Of course, I'm flying in and out of Philadelphia often during periods of ***** weather.
- bot001220, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1The last time I flew with them they wanted to charge me $1 for the in-flight cup of soda that used to be free. FFS, guys.
- LordMaude, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1Eurostar is great. We travelled by high speed rail from Vencie to Rome. It cost a little bit less than the cheapest budget flight and about the same travel time after you minus check in queues, security screening, waiting to embark/disembark. But the best thing was large, comfortable seats with power plugs.
- Robshocka, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1A. Fuel is still a lot more expensive than it was ten years ago.
B. Airlines do not by fuel in the same way you buy gas for your car, the weekly or even daily fluctuations in price you see at the Shell station do not apply to the airlines. And airplanes do not pass through a super sized Marathon station to fuel up.
C. Despite fuel being cheaper it's still by far the most expensive part of the business, especially since it's not dirt cheap like it was. Airlines have done a lot of research on how to cut down on fuel consumption to try and squeeze every bit of efficiency they can out of fuel.
D. What do you want to do play some fee game of grab ass, when fuel gets over $2.75 you get charged fees and when it's under you don't? That would go over really well. - Xwhy, on 07/04/2009, -0/+1There were two recent events when children were put on the wrong plane and no one noticed that there was an extra passenger on the flight (an unaccompanied minor, no less). In one case, the airport in New Jersey called the grandparents in Ohio and wanted to know why they hadn't come to pick the child up yet. In their defense, okay, NJ has probably a half-dozen different area codes and they might not have realized that it was an Ohio number but they should've figured something was wrong. (By the way, the grandpartents didn't get the message because they weren't home -- they were at an airport in Ohio.)
- fr3nch, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1I'll never fly anything but southwest ever again. They ran over my bag (with a baggage cart, not an airplane) and broke $300 worth of stuff in it. I had a check in my hand for $300 three weeks later. Good luck getting that from ANYONE else.
- Robshocka, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1Fees may be a hassle, especially if you're a lazy consumer, but they are in no way hidden. It's like saying taxes are hidden fees and retailers should just roll the taxes into the price because you expected to pay $9.95 and not the 10.55 it actually cost when said and done.
Blaming corporations for consumer laziness is asinine. And would people really be happier if all sorts of fees were rolled into their tickets? Sure you only do one transaction, but if you broke it all down I doubt it very much that joy would be rampant.
What flips my wig is that people cry about hidden fees and pine for a system that would actually hide fees! It's like some sort of Orwellian doublespeak nightmare! - chooochooo, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1This is ridiculous!
I recently booked a trip online and I noticed the final bill came up to a certain amount and I was confused because the cost for the ticket was less. So I looked and I noticed a tag called ".... Fee", I was like JEEZ, what fee is this? NOW I know what they charge us for. This is absurd!
Thanks for sharing, I was wondering what the extra fee was for when I booked my ticket. -
