- Nekura20x6, on 10/18/2009, -2/+37...and conveniently save your arrest until after you land!
Republicans wail on and on about state's rights, but the second a state passes marijuana legalization laws they suddenly can't be trusted. - ToksterJokster, on 10/18/2009, -1/+29That is awesome, Northern California is leading the way for change here. I want to move there.
- inactive, on 10/19/2009, -2/+14They also wait on and on about government controlling too much of their lives, but if you want to consume a drug safer than alcohol in the privacy of your own home, they're all for the government busting down your door to make sure you can't.
- untreadatom, on 10/19/2009, -2/+13Whats so crazy about that? In other states people are threatened with years of prison time for possessing less than an ounce of a non-lethal substance.
- jakobrowning, on 10/19/2009, -2/+13You know, there are plenty of Dems that do the same thing. This isn't a party issue this is a constituency issue.
- BoneStamp, on 10/19/2009, -3/+12I went to college in Northern California (aka norcal) and it was the best place I've ever lived. People don't look at you funny or laugh at you for doing something "unusual", it's a great environment for fresh thinkers. After being there a few days, I remember seeing my professor go by on his skateboard. That would never be allowed at the East Coast College I went to before.
So, if you're moving norcal, you're not just doing it for weed. You're doing it because you can be different and everyone else thinks that is a good thing, not a bad thing. That is why so many great ideas come from there, and why they lead change in so many areas. - fredrockbluff, on 10/19/2009, -1/+10am i the only one who sees a huge business opportunity here?
- Polycarp87, on 10/19/2009, -2/+9You are probably joking, but if you aren't, then I disagree with you.
Marijuana smoke, like the smoke from any fire, contains numerous hazardous compounds, many of which are carcinogens. N-nitrosamines are one example, if you are curious. These actually form in higher concentrations in the second hand smoke. Secondly, inhaling second hand smoke can result in someone getting high who does not want to, just by sitting on a plane. - Jo9100, on 10/19/2009, -2/+9Smoke it.
- jonnieblaze, on 10/19/2009, -1/+7"excuse me sir, would you like to have the chicken or fish today?"
"funions, lots of funions." - serif69, on 10/19/2009, -1/+7Am I the only one who would be paranoid as hell that I'd get arrested upon landing at my destination?
- DrunkenSavior, on 10/18/2009, -3/+8Fly High.
- funkyloki, on 10/19/2009, -0/+4That is why medical marijuana laws allow people to grow their own, therefore not being dependent on corporate greed for your stuff.
- ToksterJokster, on 10/19/2009, -3/+7Now they need to allow patients to smoke on planes and we will be all good to go.
- dusanmal, on 10/19/2009, -1/+5Except if Fed's have something up theirs that day. Theoretically you are transporting banned stuff between states... Even a small amount seen that way may bring a lot of grief.
- D1Foley, on 10/18/2009, -1/+5Isn't Oakland the first city in the country to tax medical marijuana? I'm pretty sure they are so it makes sense that they would want to protect that source of income.
- g0atm0nster, on 10/19/2009, -0/+4Not to mention allergies. When you're stuck in a box that far up with 100 other people it's pretty important to be respectful of people's individual health issues. I got kinda grumpy they wouldn't let me use my ecig last time but I can completely understand why.
- untreadatom, on 10/19/2009, -2/+6Thats why jesus invented brownies.
- BoneStamp, on 10/19/2009, -1/+4You talking about the cockpit or the tail section?
- JROXZ, on 10/19/2009, -2/+5It's like the 49'ers but for WEED...
- inactive, on 10/19/2009, -4/+7Flying with small amounts has never really been an issue... especially if you're female.
Nature's pouch FTW. - senae, on 10/19/2009, -1/+4Yeah, just like they should let you smoke tobbaco in planes.
Oh, wait, that's a terrible idea. - Snuffs, on 10/19/2009, -0/+3Fly High Airlines TM
"we bring our weed, so you don't have to"
wouldn't that be epic? - JRowe3388, on 10/19/2009, -2/+4"They also wait on and on about government controlling too much of their lives"
Unless you aren't christian, of course. - smashTasker, on 10/19/2009, -7/+9Legalize all drugs
- InfiniteNothing, on 10/18/2009, -2/+4How exactly are you going to get back to Oakland? Drive?
- sHockz, on 10/19/2009, -2/+4never had a problem flying with it before...but another win none the less for the community. recognition is key in the good fight for decriminalization
but it definitely puts a new spin on the "mile high club" - funkyloki, on 10/19/2009, -0/+2Normally, my experience has been that your bags don't get searched when you land, only when you are checking in, so unless the TSA at Oakland reports those they found to be carrying, or you have to register your card or something, the destination airport really would have no idea.
I admit I don't know completely what happens behind the scenes at an airport. - ScottyAnimal, on 10/18/2009, -1/+3You could fly out of Oakland with an ounce, land in Massachusetts and be perfectly fine (well get a small fine in MA if caught and cited) :D
- absurdist, on 10/19/2009, -2/+4Sheriff's spokesman Nelson said the sheriff "neither supports nor opposes the medical marijuana law."
"He's had no position on that," Nelson said. "He's just trying to do the best he can when a state law conflicts with a federal law."
The California Supreme Court has already ruled as far as what this asshat's responsibilities are and are not vis-a-vis federal law. It's not up to him to interpret their decision, but to carry it out. Meaning it's not his responsibility to enforce federal law when it conflicts with state law. He's a state employee, not a fed. - pak314, on 10/19/2009, -0/+2If marijuana were co-opted by big business then would start replacing parts of it with HFCS.
- Dalhectar, on 10/19/2009, -0/+2Has the quality of Tobacco or Alcohol decreased because they are legal?
It'll be mass produced and there will be commercials for it, and marketing campaigns that I personally feel will be in poor taste, but to be honest, all the companies that will sell weed cigarees will probably want to push up the quality of weed, not downward.
There will be negative externalities with full on weed legalization and many of theme will be brought on by the corporatization of weed, but we already have a different set of negative side effects of weed criminalization, and seeing our streets free of illegal dealers and turf wars that accompany them would be a good thing. - skibums4life, on 10/19/2009, -0/+2don't drink and drive get high and fly
- mustache, on 10/19/2009, -1/+3The Eagles players are going to need to take advantage of this after yesterday.
- LordByr0n, on 10/20/2009, -0/+2You are now free to smoke about the cabin!
- chompers66, on 10/20/2009, -0/+1Who would ever want to go back to Oakland?
- TheMidnighter, on 10/20/2009, -0/+1its a start
- funkyloki, on 10/19/2009, -1/+2State law should always trump federal law.
- Chadwick2012, on 10/19/2009, -2/+3Folks this is the captain speaking; light 'em up, cuz we're going down.
- EvilGrouse, on 10/19/2009, -0/+1Awesome. Just awesome. Long drive for me though. Hmm.........
- BoneStamp, on 10/19/2009, -1/+2We pick you up at the airport, take you to a dispensary, get you back to the airport and on to your destination. As long as you don't have to clear security again during a connection then you should be good.
- boulderomen, on 10/20/2009, -0/+1Guys high-quality bud is ridiculously cheap here in California, and getting cheaper with every dispensary they open. the street dealers already can't compete. You need to be moving some heavy weight pretty quickly to make anything worth-while now. If 'street dealers' and 'turf wars' are whats scaring you into weed legalization, think of this, a lot of pot dealers only sell to make back what they smoke! but if you're talking about cartel-type dealers that the news likes to talk about so much, not those honest smoe's who are just playing the American chessboard to get by, well they have moved onto more profitable products...such as METH. the real problem.
- drex8, on 10/19/2009, -1/+2Just don't show up at the airport looking like the guy on the couch and going "aheahheahea" http://www.explosm.net/db/files/Comics/Matt/This-i ...
- EverTheCynic, on 10/19/2009, -0/+1Legitimate medical conditions (i.e. cancer) aside, you guys can't take a couple days off from getting high when you take a flight somewhere? Really?
- Mofo, on 10/19/2009, -1/+2This is a moot point. TSA checks everyone who gets on a plan and TSA is a federal agency. Marijuana is still illegal under all fed policies. So while the local sheriffs may not arrest you, an Air Marshall will have no issues arresting you. I'm sure there are also other TSA and FAA regulations you would be violating carrying drugs on a plane, even if you go from Oakland to San Diego and never leave CA airspace.
- boulderomen, on 10/19/2009, -0/+1We do not have a true free market here in America. how is it that tobacco is legal yet cannot grow yourself for profit without going through a government bureaucracy to obtain a license? why is it that the 'free market' in the hands of our government tends to sway the way of the corporation?
- KSUdesigner, on 10/19/2009, -1/+2Part of what you say is correct, but there would also be a demand for better quality marijuana, so some company would come along and sell better quality marijuana to beat out the competition. Then those competitors would come back with something better. This is the beauty of a free market. If there is demand, somebody will sell it.
- monkiboi, on 10/19/2009, -0/+1FTA:
Raich eventually went to the Alameda County counsel's office.
That office "finally told (Sheriff Greg Ahern) he had to comply with California law whether he liked it or not, and only then did he adopt a policy," Raich said.
Give the people what they want. We voted for this! -
