And a little fix-it work - inactive, on 06/18/2009, -0/+275The problem is that the house you get is actually worth $100.

- lazycat, on 06/18/2009, -4/+98This is the way a free market should work.
- BM7876, on 06/18/2009, -0/+85Maybe this is just the most elaborate Nigerian Scam ever.
- PhillyMJS, on 06/18/2009, -1/+63"Its windows were boarded up and plywood was nailed across the front door. The huge hole in the roof was courtesy of the fire department. A neighbor said the house had been set on fire -- twice."
A house that attracts arsonists is exactly where I want to keep my possessions and sleep at night. - siszam, on 06/18/2009, -4/+59After back taxes the seller owes you money.
- RealmDown, on 06/18/2009, -0/+52Repairing one neighborhood at a time.

- completED711, on 06/18/2009, -6/+44You couldn't pay me to have a house in Detroit...
- dazparkour, on 06/18/2009, -2/+39SURPRISE! You've been raped.
See, this is digg so the first rape wasn't a surprise because it was exactly the response you expected.
Now you will keep getting raped until you stop expecting it. - MikeOSX, on 06/18/2009, -1/+34You couldn't pay me $100 to live in Detroit.
- balthisar, on 06/18/2009, -0/+32No kidding. Detroit -- like so many run down cities -- has no incentives to invite the middle class back in, and make it a good city again. Higher-than-average property taxes, even with homestead deductions, on top of an income tax (only a few cities in Michigan have that), make it so that no one in their right mind would want to live there. Throw in the fact that the corrupt city council is elected at large city wide (rather than by district), and you can be sure that you'll have no representation whatsoever in the city government (unless you're black, poor, and ignorant, and that's not racist; just the way it is).
- dazparkour, on 06/18/2009, -0/+31You want to save on heating?
- acknotSW, on 06/18/2009, -0/+30During the last major downturn in 2001, I found myself with years of IT experience working as a tech for a hole in the wall recycler/reseller.
When I went back to school for an electrical engineering degree, they had to hire someone part time to cover the times I had to be in class. They were basically looking for someone to do the grunt work to free me up for the "important" stuff. They were advertising it as little more than a computer warehouse job.
In the first week, I received over 500 resumes and at least half had the same or more experience than I did. MCSE's, CCNA's, programmers, computer science grads (with experience) were all lining up for this crappy minimum wage job. It's amazing how bad it can get sometimes. - MikeOSX, on 06/18/2009, -0/+29... But a true statement. See, $100 is not very much money; certainly not enough to change my residency. Especially to Detroit of all places.
- Bloodwine, on 06/18/2009, -0/+27Robocop was so prophetic, which is sad.
We need to deploy some ED-209's ASAP. - lpferris, on 06/18/2009, -0/+26The only problem is that city parks don't generate any property tax revenue. In the long run, putting money into these neighborhoods will pay off for the city for just that reason.
- metaknite, on 06/18/2009, -1/+26...and start accepting it.
- ralphthemagi, on 06/18/2009, -0/+25I think the thing that everyone is overlooking here is this: at $100/house you could buy an entire block, demolish everything, and build a giant badass castle with a moat.
- geauxtig3rs, on 06/18/2009, -5/+29You beat me to it.
Actually, if you have a brain and/or a college degree, the job market isn't horrible in Detroit. The problem is that the economy had been built on unskilled laborers with no more than a high-school education. When the layoffs started happening and the plants closed, they had no marketable skills, and as such have languished in unemployment.
I'm not saying it isn't bad there, but you have to put it into perspective. - KSUdesigner, on 06/18/2009, -1/+23A college degree does not automatically get you a job. The job market IS horrible in Detroit, right along with the rest of the country. I know plenty of people with college degrees and years of experience who have been looking for work for many months now. It has nothing to do with marketable skills, it has everything to do with the fact that very few businesses, regardless of the field they are in, are hiring right now.
- anillop, on 06/18/2009, -4/+25Normally I hate wastes of space like like akbar and pedobear, but this time it seems oddly appropriate.
- inactive, on 06/18/2009, -3/+24One of those houses would be a great place to grow weed.
- blakecr, on 06/18/2009, -3/+24Rot in Detroit Detroit.
- dazparkour, on 06/18/2009, -0/+21What about deviant artists?
- WhiskeyLemur, on 06/30/2009, -0/+20Not in this case, anyway: "...bids on the foreclosed property started at $95 for the property, $5 for the house. There were no back taxes -- no one seemed to be sure who once owned the house, it had been empty for so long, Brumit said."
- trizzleatl, on 06/18/2009, -0/+19You can get into any foreclosed HUD homes anywhere for $100 down if you have an FHA loan. Only caveat is that you have to put money into escrow for the repairs that HUD finds during their inspection. Those repairs are listed up-front before you even make an offer (they are on the HUD listings on their website). The repairs have to be less than $5,000 in order for this situation to qualify, but I've seen a number of nice homes that need only a couple hundred dollars of repairs. And since HUD did a full inspection of the house already, if you wanted to you could forgo your own inspection, thus saving you a few hundred bucks that you could put towards the repair. I'm not saying that's the best idea; I'm just saying that it's pretty easy to get into a home these days.
BTW, a foreclosed HUD home is not some special house or in some special area. It's simply a home where the former occupant had an FHA loan and defaulted on it. Many first time home buyers get an FHA loan since they only require 3.5% down (foreclosed HUD homes being the exception @ $100 down).
And if your income is less than 120% of the average of the area you are moving into, you should be eligible to receive thousands of dollars for improvement of the property. This, on top of the $8,000 that you'll get from the Federal gov't if you close on a house by Dec 1st this year, as well as free money from the state (GA is giving $1,800 over 3 years). There's also something here in GA called teh Georgia Dream that gives up to like $12,000 if your income isn't too high and you buy a foreclosed home.
Seriously, if you aren't in a house yet, look into it. - dazparkour, on 06/18/2009, -0/+18And since it is Detroit the rest of the money is spent on guns and making your house one giant safe room?
- DrDragun, on 06/18/2009, -4/+22That city will soon be even more of a hive of crime when unemployment passes 20%. Thanks but I'd rather eke out a modestly comfortable living as a debt-slave to my mortgage for 20 yrs than deal with muggers and break ins daily.
- badtzmartin, on 06/18/2009, -0/+17No... it's "I'd buy THAT for a dollar..."
- HurricaneDC, on 06/18/2009, -0/+17And that whole crime thing.
- bstew22, on 06/18/2009, -2/+19Rot in Detroit hell.
- UTPinky, on 06/18/2009, -6/+23Normally I hate wastes of space like people stating that they normally hate wastes of space like ackbar and pedobear but that for some reason this time it seems appropriate, but this time... nope still hate it.
- jdames1980, on 06/18/2009, -1/+17How long has it been since you've been here? This summer has been cool so far, but for the past 10 years summers have been hot, muggy and hellish with temperatures in the upper 80s and lower 90s quite more than you'd think. And yes, there is a lot of humidity here with all these lakes.
- StonerThomas, on 06/18/2009, -1/+16If you don't need plumbing, electricity, can fight the already embedded sellers, and can find demand in a city with no money, then I guess you're right.
- jwolcott, on 06/18/2009, -3/+18Asking price is $100.
You can probably negotiate that down to $2. Still not worth it, though. - joerad010, on 06/18/2009, -1/+16Michigan even has its own unique climate designation by the USGS - Maritime Continental.
So yea, lots of humidity. - sgvprelude, on 06/18/2009, -1/+16actually, they bought the land for $95, and the four walls and 3/4 of roof for $5
- xsecretfiles, on 06/18/2009, -3/+18I don't want to get shot, so no thanks.........
- BxBoy, on 06/18/2009, -0/+14Eminem welcomes you:

- asgardshill, on 06/18/2009, -3/+17Of course, you'll have to commute to Fort Wayne or Toledo to find a decent enough job just to pay the property taxes on the place. But hey, if you're into 8 hour daily commutes this'll be right up your alley.
- alexawesome, on 06/18/2009, -0/+14Further proving, once and for all, that cities built on rock and roll don't last.
- MatthewDuke, on 06/18/2009, -3/+17Why is the government giving $25k to "save" these neighborhoods. Just bulldoze them, plant some pine trees, and presto! It's a giant urban city park. $25k for a 1/4 acre has got to get you some decent landscaping, trees, etc. and would be much better spent on greenfields instead of propping up a ghetto that nobody wants to live in.
- algorythm, on 06/18/2009, -3/+17I think he just speaks the truth. You probably think the same way but don't say it in public.
- Ebacherville, on 06/18/2009, -1/+12the city will give you 25,000 if you live there and the house costs 1% of the 25,000.. thats 250 bucks.. so basically there gving you 25,000 to live there so you can buy a home, the average home price is 11,000 for 25,000 you might get a pretty nice foreclosed home or a good fixer upper and money to renovate..
For retired people or people that can work from anywhere this might be a great way to go.. -
