2030: the picture of a vast ocean - davidg11, on 11/12/2008, -0/+17I've been there. On my honeymoon...We got one of those "huts" above the water. Where the coffee table is made of glass and is removable so you can feed the fish below you. Awesome place. A little spendy, but awesome.
And to my eye, this was back in 1999, its started to get crowded out there as far as hotel/resort build out. Sad..
You can swim with sharks and/or manta rays out there. Pretty cool. - Lucas123, on 11/12/2008, -0/+12Wish I was there.

- davidg11, on 11/12/2008, -0/+6It depends where you want to stay there.
I remember it was around $700 a night US to stay in a room over the water.
However, there are budget options:
http://www.boraboraisland.com/tostay.html#budget
The web site claims from $12-$80 a night.
Well worth it, and the south pacific is far better than going to Hawaii or the Caribbean.
And since you have to travel to Tahiti before traveling to Bora Bora, if you have a "cheap" option of going to Easter Island from Tahiti as an excursion, DO IT!
It added a mere $400 to our trip and was well worth it. - rozlovesben, on 11/12/2008, -1/+7id like to be there, right now.
- inactive, on 11/12/2008, -0/+5Far Cry would've been cooler if it was set on an atoll rather than an island.

I see your point but let me explain.
First of all, content quality is very subjective. You know that. If you think the story is crap, that's perfectly fine but many others don't. Pointless or not, its in the eye of the beholder. So try to take that into account instead of denying the agency of other diggers ie they-only-digg-it-because-its-me-who-submitted-it-and-its-obviously-crap etc. It might be obviously crap to you because you dislike me but some other people might like it or find it useful. You can't deny that possibility.
I don't think I submit crap but if you disagree, that's fine. I have no problems with that.
I don't have a say in how stories are promoted to the frontpage. The algo decides that. There are stuff that are promoted at 70 diggs, others get well over 300 and never get promoted. There are obviously many other factors involved that I cannot control.
I have no stake in this business, I just submit what I like... if it hits the frontpage, cool. If it doesn't, I don't care. I'm just a digg user like you and I have every right to submit stories I fancy. I just have no patience with personal attacks. A look at your comment history shows that you seem to enjoy criticizing me at every chance you get. I just think it might be fair for you to listen to what I have to say.
As for people following me and digging my stuff, that's outside of my control and I think you should place the blame on them (assuming they are REALLY blind digging. How can you tell?) instead of me because I do nothing to promote such behavior.
Here are the facts, plain and simple. You can decide for yourself:
1. I don't shout stories at all. I just submit and leave it alone. This is unlike most other active diggers who would shout a few times and get their friends to shout it. Take a look at all the other so called 'top users'. Most if not all, shout stories and push content. I simply have no interest in doing that and inflating my digg count.
2. I don't practice reciprocal digging . Create a script and run it through the stories I digg everyday and you will see with absolute clarity that I'm not playing an i-digg-you-you-digg-me game. I digg everyone... don't care if they are mutuals, friends or fans. I only care about the story.
I totally agree with you that more content diversity from more submitters is a good thing. I'm not a fan of only seeing stuff from 'elite submitters'. You're right on that, but please note that I am not doing anything at all to encourage people to digg my stuff.
Keep your eye on me 24/7 and approach me on IM while undercover, you'll see that I don't push my stories or ask anyone to digg anything from me. Period. Thanks for sharing your POV btw. - redux2redux, on 11/12/2008, -0/+4Was it because of all the staring you did of the 'bare breasted' ladies on Bora Bora?
- bman85, on 11/12/2008, -0/+5I think there's better things to believe in.
I, for one, believe i'll have another beer. - diggdong, on 11/12/2008, -0/+5hell, I'd sleep on the beach, but, a bottle of tequila is ocean front property to me.
- MakiMaki, on 11/12/2008, -1/+6It's on the frontpage because the algorithm decides there are enough diggs to put it there. Ever consider people digg it because they like the story? Try learning how digg works dude.
If you hate the story, just bury it and move on. Personal attacks are unnecessary bro. Hell I don't know you and you don't know me so calm the ***** down. I don't go over to the stories you put out and diss your ass. - falser, on 11/12/2008, -0/+4Meh, what's so good about it? There's nothing to do there except swim in the turquoise water and have sex with the island women.
- popltree2, on 11/12/2008, -0/+4Take a look at the first comment.
- SonnyJoeFoxx, on 11/12/2008, -1/+5Anyone have an equally beautiful picture of Gullah Gullah Island?
- conblex, on 11/12/2008, -0/+4I just don't see it

also this: http://cache.io9.com/assets/images/io9/2008/07/jur ... - YawehsDead, on 11/12/2008, -1/+4For some reason it reminds me of The Incredibles.
- tomarocco, on 11/12/2008, -1/+4Imagine being stuck there when the booze runs out and without a gun to do yourself in.
- TonyBalls, on 11/12/2008, -0/+3@Maki I respect that and that you are responding to me about this. Like I said, I don't think you do one thing wrong. Even the content I don't find "worthy" - it doesn't bother me in the least that you submit things I may personally not find enjoyable.
Problems with elite submitters I have, well - MSaleem is an example. I think he sits on Smashing Mag and waits for new stories to appear so that he can be the first one to submit them. And they're guaranteed to make the homepage and that doesn't seem right. I've heard him say he keeps a bunch of Firefox tabs open and waits for new stories to be posted on popular sites so he can Digg them.
But my gripe is truly with the user base. I would love to see more diverse content on Digg and its home page. True - you aren't promoting your material, but the fact is with the algorithm as I understand, it helps a person if they Digg upcoming stories that are destined to become popular. So its a good bet for them to follow your submissions and Digg them instead of one from an unknown.
So I've probably been wrongly using you as an example to get people fired up about this situation. Your prominence on the site makes it one of the only platforms available. I'm a busy person and can't spend too much time on Digg, but I've been a reader since it started. I've always wondered what action I can take to encourage people to go out and hit the upcoming stories and Digg some random ones - some that are truly interesting to them and not just the next Top 10 list or the newest XKCD comic.
Anyway, I do appreciate the back and forth here. - davdev, on 11/12/2008, -0/+3My wife and I went to Bora Bora for our honeymoon. It is just as beautiful as the Pictures, but a damn long flight. Our hotel was a series of bungalows over the water. The glass floor freaked me out one night when I woke up to go the bathroom, I stepped off the bed and thought I was going to fall into the Ocean for a minute.
We also went to Moorea which is another island in the French Polynesian chain. We actually liked it a bit more.
The trip was Damn expensive. - austang, on 11/12/2008, -0/+3I did but binya binya stole it.
- racer42, on 11/12/2008, -0/+3Only native born Tahitians can own property there.

- MakiMaki, on 11/12/2008, -0/+2@TonyBalls
No problem, thanks for the chat. I do get a better idea of where you're coming from and I share your concerns, I want digg to have more diverse content and I'm making a conscious effort of supporting users who submit stories but don't get many diggs.
The problem is time. We don't have the attention or time to spend all day on digg and with the rapid flow of stories being submitted (see stories come in at Upcoming every few seconds), its hard to see everyone of them. So one method I've been using is to rely on the Recommendation Engine i.e use my friends as filters to find stories I might not be able to locate. So far it works well.
I remember Digg saying that there was gonna be a customized homepage soon (kinda like Mixx) so I think that would help a great deal in increasing story visibility. Anyway, cheers dude. Hit me up on IM if you ever feel like chatting more. - ryansarmy, on 11/12/2008, -2/+4So that's where Bin Laden was hiding, how could we not find him?
- inactive, on 11/12/2008, -0/+2she dumped you at the island or after coming back?
- davdev, on 11/12/2008, -0/+2When I was there, most of the locals lived in little shanty houses made of metal.
The waterfront villas on the other hand are most likely out of the price range of the average Digger - GlitchEnzo, on 11/12/2008, -0/+2*those
It took me a bit to figure out what you were trying to say. :-D - minkusingh, on 11/12/2008, -0/+2what the hell are we digging this image for?
google it - Bora Bora Islands
It'd be more interesting if this was some kind of article on Bora Bora Islands - infernal6, on 11/12/2008, -1/+3WTF are you talking about? This is just a screenshot from Crysis.
- HunterKiller, on 11/12/2008, -0/+2I hear that...My wife and I just went there for our honeymoon earlier this year... Also got a bungalow over the water in Bora Bora and in Moorea.
Absolutely amazing place, but $6 for a bottle of water... nuff said. - peticsu, on 11/12/2008, -0/+2you can join the French Foreign Legion and try to get stationed there...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_Foreign_Legion ... - falcon707, on 11/12/2008, -0/+2Anyone know what the cost of a house (or property) is around there?
- kix1979, on 11/12/2008, -0/+2Just got back from my honeymoon in Bora Bora, and it is a very beautiful place. The main hotel you seen in the center is the St. Regis and to the left of that is the Le Meridien. The past few weeks Universal has been down there filming a new movie called Couples Retreat, at least that is the name for now. As for the place itself, it is wonderful and pictures do it no justice, since you can swim out a mile and still stand up and be waist deep with rays/sharks/etc...
