- BoneStamp, on 11/10/2009, -0/+61This is genius on google's part. We get free internet and think google is great. Google gets a lot of usage data from boingo. So, don't feel like you need to get google a gift in return, using the service is all they really want.
- lydiasky, on 11/10/2009, -3/+56Google is taking over the world.

"The catch? Once you log into the network, you'll be pestered if you want to set Google to your homepage or try Google Chrome"
Don't be a hypocrite. OH MY GOD YOU HAVE TO DO A SINGLE WEB SEARCH OH MY ***** GOD. - LMN8R, on 11/10/2009, -5/+15Very cool move. Thought it's not just Google that announced this, but Microsoft too:
http://blog.seattlepi.com/microsoft/archives/18468 ... - SpikeX, on 11/11/2009, -0/+10Atlanta (ATL) and O'Hare (ORD) - two of the biggest airports in the U.S., and not on this list. Shame.
- crocodilexp, on 11/11/2009, -0/+10No San Francisco, but notice Seattle... free internet for all the Microsoft employees going home for the holidays, courtesy of Google.
- pr0lixity, on 11/11/2009, -0/+9No San Francisco?
You'd think they'd at least provide service to the other tech hub of California... - kenedamick, on 11/11/2009, -0/+9Airports shouldn't charge for wifi in the first place but thank you Google.
- rusty0101, on 11/10/2009, -0/+8Dugg, even though so far it looks like neither terminal at MSP is included.
- davin3000, on 11/10/2009, -1/+9*Hugs Google*
*Google now knows my deepest secrets* - taibo, on 11/10/2009, -1/+9Google: Still rich as *****.
- orijimi, on 11/11/2009, -0/+7...Which makes me wonder if the systems are being set to override the home page with Google. They do this some places, diverting you to a locally hosted page where you need to enter a username and pass to use the open network you've connected to. I imagine that some of these travelers are possibly the old-fashioned types that may still be using Yahoo/Askjeeves/Ask and MSN/Windows Live/Bing. If they put it the Google homepage in front of a few of the remaining stragglers, that would change things for the better.
- dmb031389, on 11/11/2009, -0/+7Does google want me to give them sexual favors? Because I'm considering it.
- unic0rn, on 11/11/2009, -0/+6Aww come on!!! I want one at O'Hare....
- tdogg241, on 11/10/2009, -0/+6Even better, Seatac and Burbank will have free wifi *indefinitely.*
- toddbass10, on 11/10/2009, -0/+6Some of the airports, such as the one in Jacksonville, FL, already have free Wifi.
- squishee, on 11/11/2009, -0/+5http://tinyurl.com/yzaz8dg
- merreborn, on 11/10/2009, -6/+11"Microsoft and JiWire announced a partnership that will allow users to get free wi-fi in exchange for doing at least one Web search on Bing."
Lame.
Don't get me wrong, I'd totally do it, but that's just so... Microsoft. As if coercing people into using your product is a successful long-term strategy.
What does google ask for in return? An (completely) optional donation to charity, which they'll match. - BoneStamp, on 11/11/2009, -0/+4I think you're right, and the article says they will ask if you want to make google your homepage and try google chrome.
- skidork, on 11/10/2009, -0/+4I saw this story on CNN and got excited Google was going to start doing Free WiFi all over the US.
This is still good news, however. - kiantech, on 11/10/2009, -1/+4no LAX whomp whomp
- cquilliam, on 11/21/2009, -0/+3Old fashioned? Bing is actually quite good. Don't lump it in with the rest of Microsoft's crappy services. I use the bird's eye view all the time. I'm looking for an apartment, and I find it helpful to see where the house is online before i go over there.
- buzaman, on 11/11/2009, -1/+4Damn those cold blooded freaks
- maj170, on 11/11/2009, -0/+3Hey can we put our name on your free WIFI for a couple of weeks? Sure, why not, you'll give us a couple bucks right?? I know that at least a few of these places already have free WIFI. (Free when I was there anyway) Changing free stuff to Google free stuff isn't all that exciting.
But on the flipside, everyone should be using Chrome especially if they are still on IE. Also, Boingo needs to die... When I'm in the airport and need WIFI access for 5 minutes, I shouldn't have to pay up to $10 just to check a thing or two.
If and when Google releases nationwide free WIFI, Boingo will die just like Blockbuster Video is... Good riddance... Thank you Netflix for that!! Member since 2002 and still goin strong!
And on another note...(If there weren't enough already..) Get with the ***** times cell phone companies!! Give us all tethered access for free. You've been ***** us forever, just give us a break so we don't have to buy ***** like Boingo. - 4NDr01D, on 11/11/2009, -0/+3what are you ? the RIAA ?
FREE is FREE - dobry, on 11/11/2009, -0/+3How? They are still paying the bill despite whether free access was already accessible or not. I'm sure, as part of their agreement, they were allowed to advertise as such. Indy, I'd imagine, is not the only airport on the list that had existing free wi-fi. This still benefits each airport while providing a kind gift to the public during the holidays in the name of Google. If I may also add, in a very clever way.
- swiftsam, on 11/11/2009, -0/+3They are partnering with the providers already doing business there, not competing.
- jardine64, on 11/11/2009, -1/+3I love google.
- amolkold, on 11/11/2009, -0/+2Damn ... no ATL or LAX :(.
- peteyb1313, on 11/11/2009, -0/+2No love for the YYZ?
- 4NDr01D, on 11/11/2009, -0/+2no Love for RTP // RDU either
- LMN8R, on 11/11/2009, -1/+3Who are you responding to? Bing is a great product. Google is a great product. Both services are offering consumers something free for the holidays. Both services are requiring certain terms that helps themselves while offering this free service to customers.
If Microsoft is "bribing" people here, so is Google.
Google combining this free service with cheritable donations is very commendable. Doesn't negate the tremendous amount of charity Microsoft puts forth every year either, nor does it necessarily make Google's offering any better than Microsoft's here. - coraleaterlinda, on 11/18/2009, -0/+2And now everyone loves Google even more (including me). Suck it, overcharging loser companies.
- Asten77, on 11/12/2009, -0/+2Well, O'hare is run by the Chicago city government. Google probably didn't want to sully themselves.
- kinghondorp, on 11/11/2009, -0/+2but really you can't mean " f*&k you boingo" b/c you did pay them... if you don't like them, don't pay them... protest 101.
- acroyear2, on 11/22/2009, -0/+2well, i at least they got burbank. it's better than LAX as well I spose. also, for those who come into LA, Burbank airport is really where all the hotties area.
- inactive, on 11/18/2009, -0/+2@Portugal, Airport wi-fi is totally free
ha. - Hijack32, on 11/11/2009, -1/+2Google does it again
- chiptricky, on 11/11/2009, -0/+1aka Skynet
- securitynerd, on 11/19/2009, -0/+1seriously.
- Magicmasta, on 11/11/2009, -1/+2all in US :(
- DevilInPgh, on 11/22/2009, -1/+2Duh, that's what I was going to say as well. Unless there's something the Airport Authority isn't telling me about their future plans with wi-fi at PIT.
- Flagg3, on 11/11/2009, -3/+4@LMN8R,
There doesn't seem to be a single reputable source that confirms this, looks like a random guess from Gizmodo. The Google blog nor the FAQ from google indicate there is any prompt at all given to the user, so unless they are talking about a simple link included on the startup page, this appears entirely false.
I think the main problem for Microsoft is that they just don't get it. Google isn't a charity. They offer free services like this to get you to try and use their products, absolutely.
The difference is that Google offers free services because they know that their for profit search business is popular enough that people will use it on their own, and the easier they can make it for people to access google search, the better it is for them.
Microsoft instead does things like paying people with various promotions like cash back, prizes for searching and things like this promotion where you must do a search in order to get access. Promotions that offer incentives in exchange for using a search engine are never a solid approach, if they were then iWon.com would have ruled the internet by now.
Just offer a solid product. If it's something people want they will use it. Bribing them isn't going to help, except temporarily. -
