- ejpusa, on 05/26/2009, -3/+17Ok, so NYC wins hands down as the coolest place on the planet.
PLEASE get someone to run against Bloomberg. Just as he's ready to run for election, now we see all these improvements. For years he's spent millions trying to jail bikers, +330,000 marijuana arrests, NOTHING exists outside Manhattan. Traffic has been jammed up for years without a coherent plan. Now we get these "improvements?" .... omg.
Oh, WAIT, I see a new Whole Foods is opening in my neighborhood, filled with white people. I give in. Bloomberg for mayor. sigh .................................................................. - MargotCross, on 05/26/2009, -3/+14i had to move out of NY because of images like this..
- FrozenDeception, on 05/26/2009, -2/+12That would be sweet if that lasted forever...
- jsynnott, on 05/26/2009, -1/+10I hear that in Europe, people go and relax on the beach when it's sunny. I think that's somewhat better than sitting in the middle of a road.
- DrummerAndrew, on 05/26/2009, -1/+10It is....
- mabba18, on 05/26/2009, -0/+9We were in NYC a few weeks ago, and kept wondering why anyone would try to drive in that area in the evenings, and why they wouldn't just block off the streets. Low and behold, we read about this right after we got home. This is a fantastic idea, and I can only imagine the positive effect it has had on the crowds.
- chriswastaken, on 10/27/2009, -0/+8Happens when people want to visit me from back east and all they want to do is goto Hollywood Blvd.
It's one street. . . and it's not that fun. - zombiecarlin, on 05/26/2009, -4/+9Times Square is a *****, you'd be hard pressed to find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. It's funny the amount of people I know who have come to this city got a hotel room in Times Square and never left the area during their visit. They go home thinking NYC is full of pan handlers, crazies and douchebags selling comedy club tickets.
- spepin, on 05/26/2009, -1/+5Must have been a traffic nightmare with all those detours. Looks like a pretty good time though.
- YawehsDead, on 05/26/2009, -0/+4Your link has one period too many: http://www.naparstek.com/2005/12/history-of-new-yo ... Link should work.
In any case, thanks for sharing! really cool - drzaeus, on 05/26/2009, -0/+4I'd rather lick the pavement in Times Square than spend a day at a NY or NJ beach.
- awtripp, on 05/26/2009, -0/+3After reading the "pirate party" story I thought it said "to Block Pirates"
- jezsik, on 05/26/2009, -0/+3It's nice to see the people taking back the city. Now if only they could bring back Park Avenue to it's orginal state. Take a look at this photo and you'll know why it was called PARK Avenue: http://www.naparstek.com/2005/12/history-of-new-yo ...
- slamandcheese, on 05/26/2009, -0/+3oh no say it aint so man weezer is the best.
- ejpusa, on 05/26/2009, -0/+3I can just imagine the outcome if Karl Marx had a Whole Foods is his 'hood. Lets just say, Russia would be supplying us today with some funky wheat grass power bars, advertised by hipsters on youtube.
Aisle 8? :-)
That whole pesky russian revolution thing probably would never have happened either. There has NEVER been a peoples populist uprising in a country where there is a Whole Foods. Food for thought comrades! - anillop, on 05/26/2009, -0/+3Ah so your experiencing what we in Chicago call the "Daley Effect".
- bipolarruledout, on 05/26/2009, -0/+2Driving in cities sucks ass. It wouldn't hurt to have roads about 10 blocks apart and make people walk. Isn't that the whole point of being in the city anyway so you DON'T have to drive? Do they not have park and rides in New York?
- inkubusfan, on 05/26/2009, -0/+2*googles Xylopholks*
ohhh. k. - bipolarruledout, on 05/26/2009, -0/+1Most road systems ARE pretty well designed. They work best when everyone goes the speed limit and everyone reaches their destination faster when this is the case. But alas humans are douchebags and you can't deny the constant urban expansion. It will NEVER end and will always get worse until we figure out just what we are doing to ourselves and how to make it better. Fat Chance.
- PhoenixAvatar2, on 05/26/2009, -0/+1New York isn't normally a traffic nightmare?
- flibblesan, on 05/27/2009, -0/+1Wow, this looks so cool.
- Homerr, on 05/26/2009, -0/+1Probably the best compromise is in the center of many European cities where they have retractable bollards (steel posts) during limited hours for deliveries and the like. The rest of the time it's pedestrian only and businesses thrive. Of course it helps to have decent public transit and train stations nearby.
- 11familyguy11, on 05/26/2009, -0/+1Reminds me of my sad attempts to construct a functioning road system in Sim City 4. Red intersections...so much red....
- jmones, on 05/27/2009, -0/+1There are in fact no park and rides in the city. there are also underserved three transfer zones all over queens and brooklyn. Not to mention for plenty of drivers the only reasonable route to Jersey is through midtown to the Lincoln tunnel, but who cares about all that when Bloomberg and his friends want to transform the city into some rich only zone.
- cyrix, on 05/27/2009, -0/+1I'm sure many people bitched about "detours." But you know what? ***** them, because this was a chance for all kinds of people to get together and just have some fun in some of the most well known spots in NY. I love it when my town shuts down or main street and holds art festivals, carnivals, etc...
- inactive, on 05/26/2009, -0/+1This is awesome, I work on 32nd and Madison.
NYC isn't that bad with traffic tho, depends on the time and place, there are always detours to get out of it. I drive in NYC a few times a week, and rarely ever get stuck in traffic. There are a few bad spots of course, like china town and time square. Just avoid them and you will be fine. - zombiecarlin, on 05/26/2009, -1/+2Hey I'd kill for a Whole Foods in my neighbourhood, instead I have to deal with the rodent infested, overpriced vermin holes of Gristedes and Associated.
- KMartSheriff, on 05/26/2009, -0/+1Amen. Hollywood (the city) is an empty shell of it's former self (from the '50s). Now it's just a tourist-filled ***** hole.
- Eurynom0s, on 05/26/2009, -1/+1I'm disappointed there is nothing about blocking pirates here. :(
- 5achin, on 05/26/2009, -1/+1i dugg this just for the interesting stories and comments...
- jmones, on 05/26/2009, -7/+1Bloomberg is an arrogant prick who only cares about manhattanites.
