- CptBuck, on 11/06/2009, -2/+31Interestingly this is a very old problem. Mecca was a major outbreak center for plague in the 14th century for precisely this reason.
- unknownpoltroon, on 11/06/2009, -0/+27Millions of people crammed together with poor sanitation.
- justice7, on 11/06/2009, -4/+17You guys know there is a big difference between fear-mongering and being cautious right?
The possibility that H1N1 could mutate into a being a lethal killer is real. No scientists have ever disputed this to my knowledge.
So wash your damn hands and stay clean. - andyb747, on 11/06/2009, -5/+16
Mecca Leka Hi Mecca Swiney Ho - macmcraeart, on 11/06/2009, -1/+12Happy Thanksgiving Pilgrims.
- unknownpoltroon, on 11/06/2009, -0/+8What, seeing the dark humor and the irony in a situation?
- directedition, on 11/06/2009, -1/+7Actually, it is a low number when seasonal flu kills a quarter to a half million people every year.
http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs211/en ... - IphtashuFitz, on 11/06/2009, -5/+11As of two days ago there have been approximately 6500 H1N1 deaths worldwide, many among pregnant women and children. Granted, it's a low number, but it's still significant. And if you look at the trending in reports like the one at the link below you'll see that the number of infections is continuing to grow. Just because your own personal anecdotal evidence doesn't match up with the scientific research done around the rest of the world doesn't mean it's not a problem.
http://ecdc.europa.eu/en/healthtopics/Documents/09 ... - mshensley, on 11/06/2009, -1/+6oh, you mean all the stuff they learned from the mongols who got them from the chinese and indians?
- sooner82, on 11/06/2009, -6/+10you mean lilke in mathematics, astronomy, medicine, chemistry.....wait, you were being sarcastic. You should probably read more.
- Stormwern, on 11/06/2009, -1/+5According to wikipedia the common flu has a 0.1% mortality rate. H1N1 so far: 399.234 infected, 4.735 dead, so a 1.2% mortality rate, only 12 times worse than the normal flu.
@NickDB: No, but the ones of those that are actually epidemics we should panic over. - Ne007, on 11/06/2009, -2/+5Ugh.....there is nothing more virulent about H1N1. It is a flu virus just like every other flu virus. Flu has killed annually since the beginning of time.
There is nothing more scary about H1N1. It can't mutate any more or less than any other flu strain. - sheywo, on 11/06/2009, -3/+6Does the virus of faith lower their immune system?
- settlesdown, on 11/06/2009, -0/+3unfortunately, no it does not.
- RobotBuddha, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2I think the time when we can expect much from any religious person when it comes to hard, experimental, science, is coming to an end.
- Stormwern, on 11/06/2009, -3/+5H1N1 is a lot more dangerous than the regular flu, the reason it's not killing millions is that:
-the threat is taken seriously, and steps are being taken to stop/limit the spread.
-(western) hospitals still have the capacity to treat the infected in the most effective ways, using respirators. - rearlgrant, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2Yawn... These articles seem familiar to me.

More people will die in auto accidents today than will all the individuals who die of swine flu during the entire flu season. Worry about that when you get in your car instead. - RobotBuddha, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1"Nothing serious unless you treat it stupidly and without care and attention."
Or unless you're not a healthy 20 something. I'll never grasp why it is that when it comes to so many diseases, if a person's own demographic isn't at risk they just write it off for the entire species. "So it'll only kill old people? Sweet, they should have thought about that before becoming old!" - Wornstrom, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1to all the naysayers: even if it isn't a huge threat, if we don't use H1N1 to test our contingency plan, one day a real threat may catch us with our pants down and wipe us out. Treat it like a fire drill.
- Ne007, on 11/06/2009, -1/+2I think I will implode the next time I see a flu ad or commercial.
- DrVic, on 11/06/2009, -12/+13Oh no! Not the muslims! They have so much to offer the world!
- ricker2005, on 11/06/2009, -2/+3They don't want to hear it. There's nothing more bizarre than watching people follow up a kneejerk reaction from the media with a kneejerk reaction of their own.
Plus I think laypeople on the internet know a little bit more than some scientists, many of whom are well known to be in cahoots with the pharm companies and the crab people. - inactive, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1You'd think they could just have someone follow around that big rock with a webcam and you can say you've done the Hajj online.
- Speedy7, on 11/06/2009, -1/+2You said the 'n' word on the internet. You're a racist.
/s - IAmMrTea08, on 11/06/2009, -1/+2The spread of disease has always been a concern for the Saudi Arabian government every year during hajj, you have 3 million people in very close proximity of all ages. This is no different.
- jimbo92107, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1In crowded areas you can disperse barrels with water and bleach where people can wash their hands. Other than that, cough into elbow, breathing filters... I hope it doesn't get too bad.
- ricker2005, on 11/06/2009, -1/+2And you missed the point. The current H1N1 virus is more contagious than regular seasonal flu.
http://www.cidrap.umn.edu/cidrap/content/influenza ...
That in itself is a problem since flu outbreaks can seriously hurt productivity. And it also means that there are increased deaths, because even if its just as virulent as regular seasonal flu it is still infecting more people. But beyond that is the potential for increased virulence. Any flu can mutate into something incredibly deadly like the 1918 Spanish Flu (another substrain of H1N1 for the record). The potential for massive problems is much higher when the strain itself is highly contagious. That's what people are worrying about and that's why health organizations are trying to prevent the spread as much as possible. - 13ohemian, on 11/10/2009, -0/+1The Mongols?
Arabs have produced alot of work in medicine(avi cenna) , astronomy, physics meta physics...damn algebra comes from one of the books "kitab--aljebr--"
theres two things , either you want to have a logical argument or you just don't want to accept the fact that the Arabs made a contribution.
oh and btw correcting a theory or adding to it in no way is taking from someone. - FormerBabby, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1Ouch.
- settlesdown, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1pretty much. why worry about something that has no effect on me and that I cannot control?
- appleseed1234, on 11/06/2009, -2/+3Stupid, their unwavering belief in fairy tales is going to create plenty of vectors to mutate this even further.
- themadrammer, on 11/06/2009, -1/+2The Mongols? The Mongols didn't bring anything to the table except Warfare. They did allow the lands they took over to later flourish. Furthermore, the Mongols didn't enter the game till the 11th century. Islam has been around since the 6th.
The Muslims took their Knowledge primarily from the Persians, Romans and some from the Orient. Who took their Knowledge from the Greeks, who took it...back to the beginning of time. It's amazing the lengths people go to to not give praise when it's due. - inactive, on 11/06/2009, -1/+2Wrong.
You people are so ***** stupid. Forget it. Let's choose to bury our heads in the sand and ignore facts and reality. Have fun with your fears, I'm sure you'll get very far in life with that attitude.
If I get infected, it's people like you that I'll intentionally give it to. Can't WAIT to see the mortified death-sentence look on your face when you're infected :)
...because when you live and you think, "Wow, that really was nothing" all will be well. - appleseed1234, on 11/06/2009, -2/+3The fact that they're doing it under the believe he was more than an illiterate pedophiliac crackpot does.
- btschul, on 11/06/2009, -4/+4"Nothing serious unless you treat it stupidly and without care and attention."
Like treating it by facing a big box with a million other people and bowing down over and over? - Speedy7, on 11/06/2009, -3/+3Did I mention that?
I wrote take your usual meds. Like paracetamol for example.
Don't be a twit. - themadrammer, on 11/06/2009, -1/+1That's pretty ignorant
- RobotBuddha, on 11/06/2009, -1/+1"6500 deaths? Sorry, but that's low for a flu season. Infections spread, sure. That's what the flu does *gasp*"
I think that says less about H1N1, and more about the fact that people who don't get flu shots are selfish dicks who don't care that they're contributing to the death of people with existing health problems. - askantik, on 11/06/2009, -1/+1Muhammad was actually born in Mecca... so it's not really a fairy tale if they are just going there.
- inactive, on 11/06/2009, -11/+10These stories keep making me hate the stupidity of people more and more every time I see them.
It's November. When are people going to realize H1N1 really isn't anything to worry about?
***** hell. Most of us probably know someone who had it, or had kids who got it via school and they turned out just fine. So what now? - inactive, on 11/06/2009, -4/+3Oh my god.
No, it's NOT more dangerous. Why would you think that? Honestly, based on *what*? Do you know how viruses work? Do you know the difference between H1N1 and other strains? If H1N1 wasn't used so adamantly in the media, would you even know what it is?
THAT'S MY WHOLE POINT. You people base your knowledge on people who are WRONG.
Repeat after me: it's not dangerous. It's nothing to worry about.
You will find this out over time, you might not believe me now, but PLEASE ***** learn from this when you see for yourself it was never a big issue. - NickDB, on 11/06/2009, -3/+2***** - if a million people catch normal flu, and another million catch swine flu. 30 MORE will die of swine flu, that is not a lot more dangerous.
From a Prof of pathology.
More people die of TB, Malaria, Aids, XDR TB, CANCER, Pnemonia, Menegiatis, hepatitis etc than swine flu. Don't have mass planet wide panic over those do you! - 13ohemian, on 11/06/2009, -5/+3I dont know about them , but I know your small brain doesn't either.
You really have no idea how much they have already given. do you? - jerrycan, on 11/06/2009, -5/+2Countdown to someone stating some sort of upside to this begins....now.
- inactive, on 11/06/2009, -9/+6LOL.
My own personal anecdotal evidence? Do you know what anecdotal means? I'm speaking on facts and reality here, not sensationalist news articles and pointless fear mongering.
6500 deaths? Sorry, but that's low for a flu season. Infections spread, sure. That's what the flu does *gasp*
You armchair biologists swarm in here thinking you know what you're talking about and fail to listen to facts because, for some reason, you feel need to be afraid of *something*. If it's not the ***** swine flu, it's a bird flu, or terrorists, or socialism taking over, or whatever-the-***** fearing trend of the moment is.
Stupidity breeds stupidity, and this topic is ***** proof.
Trust me. It's nothing to worry about, and your ignorance won't change that :) I don't doubt that you don't believe me, and you think whatever you read or think you know is correct, but in 2 years when it passes and nothing at all happens, you better think back to this and say, "Wow, he was right. Maybe we need to chill out on the fear pills for a bit." - ikildsatan, on 11/06/2009, -4/+1Yea but they've been doing this thing for like, over a thousand years. It's possible but improbable because there have always been pandemics and they haven't gone out of control because of this.
And BTW swine flu doesn't kill you, it lowers your immune system so that other things can kill you, namely pneumonia. - 13ohemian, on 11/06/2009, -4/+1Wow , i though digg was free of such *****.
- JCH897, on 11/06/2009, -10/+6To quote Busta Rhymes:
Chest cold diamonds make a ***** wanna cough
In Dubai 20 million on a villa loft
And then I step up in the club then these other ***** mad as *****
The way I make the people wanna sing the hook in Arabic - Speedy7, on 11/06/2009, -6/+2Forget the flu. I've had it and all it does is make you feel like you've hit your head on a wall.
Nothing serious unless you treat it stupidly and without care and attention.
Take your usual medication, forget about tamiflu, and sit the days out. -
