His cats name's are Fry and Bender.
That's awesome - garywiley, on 06/18/2008, -24/+164George Bush hates white people.

- tcpip4lyfe, on 06/18/2008, -2/+79I'm currently homeless because of the flood in Cedar Rapids and was allowed to go back into my apartment to get some stuff for the first time today. When I got there I had to shove the door open and the first thing I noticed other then it was pitch black in the lobby, was the smell. You really can't describe it. It was a mixture of super humid river smell and the smell of about 150 fridges that hadn't been running for a week. I used my lighter to find the stairs and walked through about 6 inches of the most disgusting muck you can imagine. I walked up the stairs to the 7th floor and opened the door and luckily everything was the way I left it. After almost passing out cleaning out my fridge(it ***** smelled bad), I got back downstairs and noticed there was a tree in front of elevators and almost lost it. I don't understand how it got there. The water had gotten all the way to the ceiling of the first floor. There is a video of the damage just to downtown here:

I was lucky . I know many people who lost everything they owned because of this. - inactive, on 06/18/2008, -8/+72We will get through this without looting, plundering and pillaging and killing resue workers. We will not sit on our asses and pound on tables demanding help. We will help ourselves. We are strong as a community. We have been through this before. We will get through it again and be stronger as a result.
In another note, don't let anyone tell you this should have a major effect on food prices. While it will, there is still PLENTY of food crops throught Iowa and the rest of the nation. Media will spin this and creat a lot of FUD for the futures speculators to get rich. This happens every few years. It is nature and it is necessary for the land, just like forest fires. - gstep, on 06/18/2008, -10/+66You won't ever hear Iowans crying that the government isn't doing more to help them. They help their own when someone needs it and expect the same down the road.
- Stevanoski, on 06/17/2008, -39/+79But since minorities aren't crying for more, more, more from the government this will not be a major story with the MSM.
- jellygraph, on 06/18/2008, -2/+32strange how this is hardly reported
- stopbrorape, on 06/18/2008, -17/+44whoever dugg down this comment ***** you.
- Kilometers, on 06/18/2008, -0/+27I feel like going to Iowa right now to go help those kick-ass cats.
- IphtashuFitz, on 06/17/2008, -5/+29Those are some absolutely amazing pictures. The power of Mother Nature in all her fury. I was in Des Moines, Iowa back in the early 90's about 6 months before they had severe flooding. It was quite a somber feeling to see the damage after having been there so recently. My heart goes out to all those affected by the floods.
- inactive, on 06/18/2008, -2/+24How about that cop pulling a gun on an angry resident. Imagine the caption, "This is for your own good so you don't get hurt! Stop or I'll shoot!"
- endustry, on 06/18/2008, -2/+23George Bush doesn't like white people?
- DeskFlyer, on 06/18/2008, -1/+18Damn, and we thought we had it bad here in SE Wisconsin.
- Rodalli, on 06/18/2008, -0/+17I'm loading up my bateau right now! Hold on Fry and Bender, I'm 'a comin!
- loaff, on 06/18/2008, -0/+16I can see the flood from my window!
Check out some of my pics if you'd like: http://s291.photobucket.com/albums/ll297/tree4416/ - heartspark4ec, on 06/18/2008, -0/+14Actually, it hasn't hardly been reported. It's been on CNN and MSNBC websites and in the news quite a bit.
I'm from Iowa. I actually go to school up by Waterloo, and have to drive through Cedar Rapids to get there. My sister has taught at the middle school in Parkersburg, which most of the town was destroyed by a tornado. I'm from the Quad Cities, and we have been very fortunate that our river levels have stayed below the flood of 93 (by about a foot). The rain has been awful, we have even had sinkholes form and streets washed out. I have many friends from Cedar Rapids and it's awful to watch them go through this. I almost wish it were winter again. Last week we had 3 tornado warnings in one night. But I have been very fortunate to not be incredibly impacted by the flooding myself. So far this year we have had many horrible natural disasters. We've seen bad snow storms, very low temperatures, flooding, tornadoes, earth quakes, droughts, and wildfires. My boyfriend and I keep joking that we are just a volcano and hurricane away from the apocalypse.
My heart goes out to everyone affected. - jsayreallen, on 06/18/2008, -0/+14I was one of those people that "lost everything they have". Our renters insurance doesn't allow for flood coverage if you live where there is a levee (the levee broke....) and FEMA won't give us anything since I make too much money......as a graduate assistant.......in music.......WTF?
- inactive, on 06/18/2008, -1/+15Dugg for your spirit and self reliance.
- shawnanigans, on 06/18/2008, -1/+15I hate to have to say it but you are in a democracy, the government is "their own."
- inactive, on 06/18/2008, -6/+20They wont have to wait three days for the Governor to grant permission for FEMA to provide help.
- tcpip4lyfe, on 06/18/2008, -0/+13New topsoil! (once all the pollutants leach out)
- beargrylls, on 06/18/2008, -1/+14The climate is ALWAYS changing...
- oldcrows40, on 06/18/2008, -1/+14Dugg for Futurama reference
- slappypappy, on 06/18/2008, -7/+19you do realize that Katrina hit more than just "minorities" right? It affected my family and I am as white as they come.
- Barbrady, on 06/18/2008, -1/+13It's sad to see my home state and home town of Cedar Rapids in such bad shape. :(
- Pandalume, on 06/18/2008, -3/+15Mmmm, CNN has had nothing but wall-to-wall flood coverage since this all started. This is a major story.
- roastedbagel, on 06/18/2008, -2/+14I was trying to think of something to reply with to you, but have nothing other than how ***** retarded of a kid you must be. How bout you give us the address to your moms basement that you live in, so we can get some Iowans to hear you say that to them face to face.
Perhaps tcpip4lyfe, who has commented down below and is now homeless because of this flood would like to have a chat with you. What time is your bed time?
Oh and btw, thanks for being the first person on digg ever I've had the chance to actually report. I actually took the 2 minutes to report every comment you've made since joining a couple weeks ago. All of them are crap. - jsdratm, on 06/18/2008, -0/+12The water unexpectedly rose 7 feet over the projected crest, which is why the city was caught so off guard. They projected 24 feet, but it ended up over 31 feet. Now people are starting to clean up, but it is going to take a long time. The national guard and city really have things organized and there was only one instance of looting, but some people are mad about the perimeter, like the guy in the truck that was arrested. I would rather have it that way than crazy people running around looting houses and shooting at police.
- Wilarseny, on 06/18/2008, -1/+12People like you make me proud of this state, and I'm usually pretty cautious of the whole regionalism/nationalism thing. I had to log in as my girlfriend to digg you up again.
- tcpip4lyfe, on 06/18/2008, -0/+11Ran out of time to edit. In the 3rd picture from the top, the big building to the left is my apartment.
- inactive, on 06/18/2008, -2/+12If you see carefully you'll see a man face (as clouds) licking (via vortex) earth.
- TheInformer, on 06/18/2008, -7/+17People aren't acting like victims, and therefore the media can't blame someone and come to the newly minted "victim's" rescue.
- inactive, on 06/18/2008, -5/+14Don't worry our savior obama showed up to get his picture taken dumping one shovel of sand into a sandbag. Iowans are safe!
- inactive, on 06/18/2008, -0/+8Fortunately my family lives on high elevation areas, so none of us were directly affected. I feel for you all. I will be wherever I am needed to help out with the clean up. I had a great time sandbagging. Lots of great people and some new and old friends. Fortunately where I was, the sandbagging worked and saved the town.
- inactive, on 06/18/2008, -4/+12A year from now these people will have their lives back on track while the dregs in N.O. will still be demanding "free" government money.
- inactive, on 06/18/2008, -0/+8Exactly. That corn you see nearly topped with water will grow better than ever once the water recedes!
- Perceive, on 06/18/2008, -2/+9Based on the names of the cats:
http://i30.tinypic.com/15hdfti.png - niksa, on 06/18/2008, -0/+7I live in Iowa City. Right now I'm out of classes because of the flood at the University. The art building and music buildings in particular suffered extreme damage. They're not sure if those buildings will be ready for fall semester, and it looks like we might be out of a dorm as well. That means we have to somehow figure out where to house a dorm full of students, and it's possible that art, music and theater/dance will be GONE for a year. Construction will begin as soon as possible, but due to winter and depending on the extent of damage, it's a very real possibility they won't finish by Spring. We spent days sandbagging to save the library though, but I heard the English/Philosophy building might have a few feet. Thankfully many of our buildings were spared since they are located on a hill (Math, Science, Computers, Engineering, Business, Foreign Language buildings.. these should be ok.)
On the 12th, we ate at Old Chicago's, and then drove home. We were some of the last customers at that beloved restaurant which is now under 8 feet of water. While I was on the Coralville Strip (currently under 8.5 feet of water). We knew the river was rising, but it was still bankfull. I noticed the manhole on the road was just gushing with water. Literally 2 hours later, the street was already closed with 2 feet of water. Soon after that, the levee broke and it was done.
Thankfully, I live on a hill. However the town is shut down. You can get groceries at some of the stores, but the heart of the town is inaccessible. I'm housing some of my college friends whose apartments, while fine and dry, are completely blocked off by water. At least I have two couches...
The thing is, this happened in Iowa. Alumni from Maryland and Seattle have arrived to help sandbag in Hills (south of Iowa city) this week. My parents saw the photos and drove almost 900 miles overnight, non-stop, so they could help at the hospital that was evacuating. Those who are unable to sandbag have been handing out water bottles and bratwursts and fruit - free. All along the river in Iowa City to Hills, it's been a community effort. The Amish (who mostly live nearby in Kalona) have worked 10 hour days to help save our libraries, the university, and personal homes.
People can say whatever they like about the Midwest, but you can't beat this kind of community spirit. - ByteGuerilla, on 06/18/2008, -3/+10"Actually we're a representative Republic. Democracy is a different form all together. You can't even find the word Democracy in our Constitution."
This again...
The terms are not mutually exclusive. The United States is a republic, and its political system is representative (i.e. indirect) democracy. - djruden, on 06/18/2008, -2/+9We refer to ourselves as "Iowan's". No need to add extra letters.
- screwzluse, on 06/18/2008, -0/+7It definitely puts things into perspective. It's surprising to see the progression of the floods.
On a side note, I think the last picture of Brandon Smith shows he might be alright if he can keep his sense of humor. Great names for his cats. - tcpip4lyfe, on 06/18/2008, -2/+8Those cops saved our asses on many occasions this weekend.
- izzydrewlynn, on 06/18/2008, -1/+7http://i30.tinypic.com/mw4gex.jpg
- FrozenDeception, on 06/18/2008, -3/+9I was just there trying to save a family members house by building a sand bag wall, it failed =( Damn mother nature
- inactive, on 06/18/2008, -2/+8Yea. By virtue of the fact that he got reelected proves that they deserve everything that has happened, and will happen, to them.
- SocketNine3Nine, on 06/18/2008, -0/+6wtf is wrong with you? Do you realize how many people are left homeless? Do you realize the hardships the people in these floods will face? What would you do if the basement you live in gets flooded, and all the other basements around you get flooded, where would you live now?
- moethelawn, on 06/18/2008, -1/+7I'm from Iowa and I'll keep praying to those who got flooded. Luckily I'm in the part of Iowa that didn't get flooded as bad, but some of my friends from Cedar Rapids and in Iowa City had to go though that.
- euro22, on 12/17/2008, -3/+9Damn. I used to live in Iowa City 2 years ago. It sucks looking at the pictures of the city underwater.
