- getjustin, on 11/06/2009, -1/+15Miami (hell, all of southeast Florida) is one big suburban taint.
- roastedbagel, on 11/06/2009, -1/+15Miami != All of Florida
- SlothVision, on 11/06/2009, -1/+12Living in Miami I can attest that it is a nightmare, I hate those guys who want to "watch" your car. Sometimes they literally stand in front of your car so you can't drive around them..when you are leaving the club! I got a motorcycle that works sometimes, but when it does it's the way to go, put that thing anywhere and you are fine. Until it rains, which it does a lot. Needless to say I'm looking forward to leaving Miami soon. Oh yes and the parking lots F**k them! oh its 15 dollars flat but only after six or before six, so if you are somewhere between 5-6 you pay two flat rates 30 bucks, better off getting the 18 dollar ticket. What garbage
- JedicodeWarrior, on 11/06/2009, -0/+10"... and visit enraged restaurateurs who claim the Miami Parking Authority is killing the neighborhood."
I guess the cocaine and those selling it having nothing to do with the problems. Not to mention the increasing population from people moving to the area and the influx of illegals competing for places to park in all that heat. I'd say the parking authority should be the least of your worries -- at least they're not the ones shooting and stabbing people. - reddikilowatt, on 11/06/2009, -1/+10"the two men grappled for a few moments, destroying the umbrella"
Another senseless parking-related umbrella destruction. It's a damn shame. - PiddlyD, on 11/06/2009, -0/+8You run into this kind of ***** in almost ANY big city. Aggressive panhandlers run out and spray ***** on your window and start smearing it with a greasy rag and then demand a couple of bucks for the service - you park and a guy with a gas can comes up telling you a story about how his kid is in the car and he is out of gas, you get off the freeway and there is a 19 year old with a "Out of work, Viet Nam vet, Hungry! God Bless" cardboard sign...
Oh... I'm talking about Sacramento California.
I moved to the suburbs of Canton Ohio, and the only time I've had this ***** happen to me in the last 3 years is when I was visiting Cleveland, DC, Columbus, Barcelona, going back to Sac, etc.
You want to get away from it? Join the white flight to the suburbs of the Midwest - but be ready to be stuck with a bunch of fat, boring white people drinking in their basements and watching the game on Sunday night for excitement. Can't say for sure which is worse, yet. - jeddyftb, on 11/06/2009, -0/+8I bought my first motorcycle for 1000$. It got 65 miles to a gallon of gas.
- MrSteamTank, on 11/06/2009, -0/+7You're clearly from the south. 8P
Motorcycles just aren't practical in snowy cities like Chicago, Detroit, Toronto, etc. - jcapshaw, on 11/06/2009, -0/+7Trying to stop and park in Miami was the problem...
- govtdoesnotwork, on 11/06/2009, -0/+6Hell, Miami has the world's longest parking lot, IMO. It's called US1 from about I95 to Sunset, and it happens twice a day for a few hours each time.
- TheScotsman1980, on 11/06/2009, -4/+10Any one else hear:
YEEEAAAAAHHHHH!
after they read the title? - Elliuotatar, on 11/06/2009, -4/+9"I spent half an hour driving around looking for parking before I finally had to spend eight dollars on valet parking. When I bought the ticket, I had already spent $20 just getting in, and that's without any popcorn!"
Pfft. Try Boston. It'll cost you $20 to park in a parking garage, and if you manage to find a meter so you can save a few bucks, you'll find a ticket on your windshield for $60 when you leave the club you were at which says you were parked in a bus zone!
And of course the ticket says you'll have to pay court fees if you try to fight it, which it's not worth doing so because it would cost you $20 in gas to get back to Boston and $20 to park in a parking garage, just to go to court and MAYBE get your $60 back.
***** Boston. - MrSteamTank, on 11/06/2009, -0/+5Here in Uruguay there's this wonderful little job called the "Cuida Coche" which means "Car Watcher". They have a union, little vests, and everything. I wish the government got off their asses and declared this job what it really is....organized begging. Unfortunately, it's so ingrained in the Uruguayan culture that people think it's a legitimate low income job.
Maybe these Cuida Coches are a way of dealing with poverty in latin countries since people with cars usually have the money to pay them. I'm not saying it's right though since the government could have much of the poor doing other less obstructive things. - KevinRowz, on 11/06/2009, -2/+6The dude in the picture looks kind of like Morgan Freeman's face stretched over Barack Obama's head.
- Jman5, on 11/06/2009, -0/+4So are you arguing that people shouldn't have to pay for parking? If that was the case people would just leave their cars in valuable spots all day. It would be even more of a nightmare with homeless people offering to "protect your car".
Also why would your post offend racists? - nutmac, on 11/06/2009, -0/+3I parked at a parking garage in Boylston Street once. The line for getting out was so backed up, I incurred almost $10 in additional parking fee just waiting to pay.
- ldsan, on 11/06/2009, -0/+3and this article is true. i've been avoiding driving to miami at all costs for about 5 years now.
- Jman5, on 11/06/2009, -0/+3I've lived in and around Washington DC all my life and I've never had someone try to clean my windows or extort me for a parking space/protection.
The city used to have a homeless begging problem, but the police cracked down years ago, so you don't see many if any. - malman4, on 11/06/2009, -2/+5Miami is not Florida.....
- andyb747, on 11/06/2009, -1/+3Further proof that Miami is full of evil and vengeful *****.
- crownedgriffin, on 11/06/2009, -1/+3I used to live near the college in Eugene, OR. I couldn't even park in front of my own home. If the driveway was full (room mates) and I got stuck parking on the street, I'd have to set my alarm for early in the morning, get dressed, move my car, and then go back to sleep until I had to move my car again. I hated those parking nazi *****.
- jeddyftb, on 11/06/2009, -2/+4This article is about Miami.
- torrange, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2Miami Parking Authority = Miami Parking Syndicate - Love the New Times. This is just another reason I love Miami. /s
- drethedog, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2Dear Cabbie,
Next time I suggest you to invoke one of this clauses:
"Stand Your Ground", "Line In The Sand" or "No Duty To Retreat"
And get rid of the scums one by one. - andyb747, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2The later articles about the bums making money off the parking is worth the read. very entertaining.
- Divals, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2Stuff like this is why I hate driving in Pittsburgh. Parking is twice as expensive as it says in the article, $1 for 30 minutes at a meter. And they are very predatory with towing and ticketing as well. One time I saw a cop shoving a guy away from his car so the tow truck driver could tow it away, and considering the fleet of tow trucks you always see exiting downtown around 4 or 5 in the evening, that can't be an isolated occurrence.
- insertAliasHere, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2The sarcasm is strong with this one.
- inactive, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1"where you from?"
Apparently you shouldnt ask a man where is from if you are not ready to fight :P =AWESOME - ShadyG, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1I always liked how Will Smith wrote a whole song about how great Miami is, and still couldn't think of a single thing nice to say about anything west of the Intracoastal.
- Napiertt, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1That's why they got Dexter
- PiddlyD, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1Jman, I bet it depends on the area in DC. At the Garden Inn Hilton on 14th, I got hit up every night standing out in front having a smoke, or walking down to the mall to do the tourist thing. In Georgetown, I bet you don't get as much of that.
As I thought about the list of cities I made above, it actually occurred to me that the one world city where I've never been hit up by a bum was London. I've seen one bum there, shoeless - as we crossed Westminster Bridge. But he didn't ask anyone for a thing.
The ones in Barcelona were Dutch heroin addicts, and they were the most hostile and aggressive bums I've ever encountered.
The point is, in the suburbs of Maryland, or Ohio, or Pennsylvania, you don't get this at ALL, to any degree. - Elliuotatar, on 11/07/2009, -0/+1That's exactly what I'm telling you. I was at a meter, and got ticketed. Unfortunately I only noticed the ticket on my windshield when I was halfway out of the city so I couldn't confirm for certain that the meter's confusing instructions didn't indicate that the spot was a bus stop at that particular time, but it was around 10pm at night when I arrived, and I don't think the meters were even active at that point. I certainly didn't expect parking enforcement to be out at that time of night.
- cplusplus, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1On the other hand, you live in hot Miami, drive a motorcycle and go to the clubs.
- curunir, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1Obviously, because their hidden agenda is to stop black people from parking.
- rlax819, on 11/06/2009, -1/+2being from miami and learning to drive there, i can say im a better safer driver after having to deal with people like that on a daily basis
- cawpin, on 11/06/2009, -1/+2"you'll find a ticket on your windshield for $60 when you leave the club you were at which says you were parked in a bus zone! "
If you're at a meter, you can't be in a bus zone. And don't tell me they ticket you anyway. - ladykba, on 11/06/2009, -3/+3at least the southern parts, I live in North Florida and it's nowhere near that bad or I'd get the hell out faster...still want to leave but not as bad if I was in *****-ami
- ldsan, on 11/06/2009, -3/+3ya i'll just drop 8 grand on a bike, ***** it, problem solved
- KnightWhoSaysNi, on 11/06/2009, -1/+1South Florida has some excellent places to live.
Miami is not one of them, but it is easily avoided. - Kungfumantis239, on 11/06/2009, -2/+2The weather is still beautiful year round. Enjoy that snow shoveling!
- billmdee, on 11/06/2009, -1/+1Watch Parking Wars on A&E and you can see what fun parking in big cities like Philadelphia and Detroit is like. Then see what a pain in the butt it is to get your car back after it has been towed.
- phatcher, on 11/06/2009, -0/+0This is insane. And I have such a fondness for FL.
- lroche, on 11/06/2009, -2/+1Been to Miami once ... cabbed it the whole time.
- voxomkid, on 11/06/2009, -2/+1Every time I go out at night to a club or a bar by downtown, there's about 2-3 homeless men who are already arguing on who will be 'looking' over my car, if you don't pay them or tell them you don't need anybody to look at it, be ready to see your windows smashed or your "Black Ice" airfreshners stolen.
- chrisinsocalif, on 11/06/2009, -2/+1I get it! CSI Miami for those who dugg him down. Maybe they should refer to youtubes, "David Caruso's one liners" video.
- hhyy2463, on 11/06/2009, -2/+1install dash cam. then dont pay them jack, then report to police.
- inactive, on 11/06/2009, -4/+1lol........nothing better than America's urban *****.
- jeddyftb, on 11/06/2009, -6/+3I live in a major city too and parking is always a bitch. You know how to solve it? Get a motorcycle.
- Notyavgkat, on 11/06/2009, -7/+3only good thing about miami is the cheap work, and the fine ass latinas
