I can go anywhere I want, with minimal walking and hardly any waiting (trains run every few minutes during rush hour) for only $80 a month. Name one private transportation system that's any better. Have you flown lately? The airlines are a joke. Taken Greyhound? How's Amtrak doing?

    Private enterprises don't have such a great track record when it comes to transit.

    The New York subway system was run by private companies at first - but they went bankrupt and the evil government had to step in to save them. The fascist, oppressive jackbooted thugs then went on to give the private companies taxpayer money to prop them up, and they still couldn't keep the trains running.
    Finally, the Orwellian nightmare that was the city government offered the entire rail system to any company that could afford it - no one could.
    For over 75 years now, these goose-stepping, liberty-crushing monsters have operated a system that gets millions and millions of people around the city in a manner even less efficient than the downright totalitarian regimes of London, Tokyo, Paris or Taipei.

    If you know a private company that wants to come take over the $7 billion / year in salaries and $4 billion / year in maintenance costs, I'm sure they'd be willing to listen. Who do you think would be a good candidate? GM? How about Chrysler? How are those guys doing these days?

  • iAMac, on 04/25/2009, -0/+24I live in the city and I take the G train every day to school. Sometimes you have to pack yourself into the G because it is only four cars long. When Brooklyn Tech HS (4,000+ students) dismisses, kids are pushed into the cars and stuck like a fly to the window! (Had to do that once). The main problem is that one G train would come and then the other would come 20 minutes later with another train right behind it. This advisory is 100% accurate of the NYC Subway system, especially after this past week.
