- RansomHoldiay, on 03/24/2009, -16/+429412 feet deep! that's nearly one foot for every time this has been on digg!
- Samohtneas, on 03/24/2009, -0/+168I would be scared ***** to swim over that hole. I would feel like some ancient terror is going to come up and swallow me.
- cscott5288, on 03/24/2009, -3/+152this is pretty incredible ... wish i had the money to visit a place like that
- inchrnt, on 03/24/2009, -2/+100"the hole is about 1,000 feet in diameter and 412 feet deep" ... and filled with monsters!
- aherman, on 03/24/2009, -8/+93A+++++++++ WOULD DIGG AGAIN!!
- rypic7, on 03/24/2009, -2/+85It's fascinating how perfect that circle is, especially for a cave in.
- inactive, on 03/24/2009, -2/+70deep water creeps me out
- indochris609, on 03/24/2009, -4/+69Does anybody else get that tingly feeling in your feet when seeing this deep water?
- ThirdPoliceman, on 03/24/2009, -1/+49If you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you
- Genecalypse, on 03/24/2009, -5/+52its like the anus of the world

- bpwrinn, on 03/24/2009, -1/+39PontdePierre deserves a pi.
- gab00n, on 03/24/2009, -2/+40I'd like to drop a line in that hole and see what bites.
- cupajoe60, on 03/24/2009, -0/+31I've been down to 145 there. Cool stuff. Old cave formations and sharks.
- PontdePierre, on 03/24/2009, -2/+31Funny, my friend just went there on vacation.
Do you really wanna swim around it- it's got a 1,000 feet diameter, which means it has a 3,141 foot circumference. Doable, but worth it? - ricoboy24, on 03/24/2009, -0/+23if i ever wanted to dump a body, i would put it in that big hole.
- piemcgee, on 03/24/2009, -1/+23Want vacation.
- MaxterICC, on 03/24/2009, -1/+23that's what she said?
- Vindicoth, on 03/24/2009, -1/+23Oh great, that just does wonders for my phobia of losing buoyancy.
- basickly, on 03/24/2009, -1/+22Man if I somehow found myself treading water in the middle of that thing, I think I would actually die of terror.
. - inactive, on 03/24/2009, -0/+19If by "tingly feeling in your feet" you mean "creeping dread in every fibre of your being" then yes.
- inactive, on 03/24/2009, -2/+20mom?
- cathpah, on 03/24/2009, -1/+18nope. not true. Belize is definitely not a 3rd world country.
Cheap? yes. Third World? no way.
There are no third world countries in the western hemisphere, except for maybe Haiti. - inactive, on 03/24/2009, -0/+17i always thought it was mother earths vagina.
- ricoboy24, on 03/24/2009, -1/+18200,000 acres of hole.
- inactive, on 03/24/2009, -7/+23bravo.
- feylanks, on 03/24/2009, -0/+16while belize is a little pricey, central america is generally very affordable
i spent less than $2000 for a month in honduras this past summer, which included 2 weeks of diving on the same reef system as the blue hole - jobeus, on 03/24/2009, -1/+16Belize is amazing! Here's a video I took inside the Blue Hole in 2006: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WMQgEhB2E5k
- dammer, on 03/24/2009, -0/+15Been there, it is awesome. Dove down 150 feet and swam in between ginormous stalactites and stalagmites. Almost got hit by an anchor on the way up...
- homer00, on 03/24/2009, -0/+15Nope, in fact atolls cannot form from impact craters, unless a crater were to hit an island with reef growth exactly in the center. An atoll is formed when an island with a barrier reef surrounding it, (usually a volcanic island) sinks due to erosion, or in this case, cave collapse. Thus the surrounding reef will remain above water while the island it was formerly surrounding sinks to the sea floor.
At least that is the simple way of putting it. - malex, on 03/24/2009, -0/+14Maybe there's no specific definition, but Belize has a functioning economy, a stable government, and their own beer. There's nothing 3rd-world about it.
I highly doubt that Junskey has even been there. - Regarius, on 03/24/2009, -0/+13http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qgCBB2Nry2w
Ancient terrors! - DemDude, on 03/24/2009, -1/+14Did you mean "movie"? Dude, that line is from Nietzsche.
It means, if you concern yourself too much with terrible things, these terrible things will eventually have an impact on you. - volume909, on 03/24/2009, -0/+11lol nah you can actually escape in this one :)
- Piha, on 03/24/2009, -0/+103rd world or not, this is totally affordable/doable for most people on a western income or equiv. Sure you may need to do a bit of research. You may have to settle for something a bit more adventurous than merely telling your travel guide to organise everything, or picking some really obvious charter option.
Get a cheap plane ticket during the off season, sort out some cheap accomodation, rent a boat, check the weather, drive out there.
If it's too pricey, get some mates involved to help split costs.
Easy peasy. - Subspace, on 03/24/2009, -1/+11Google maps: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=17%C2%B018%2756.55%2 ...
- inactive, on 03/24/2009, -0/+10Cousteau had some massive balls to explore that.
- jj101, on 03/24/2009, -0/+9CJMS (constant jaws music syndrome)? Me too.
- inactive, on 03/24/2009, -3/+11Man, that hole could hold a LOT of gargbage!
- MicrosoftBob, on 03/24/2009, -0/+8The death of God, Nietzsche argued, means that all the Christian values that have shaped the West rest on a mythical foundation. One may, out of habit, continue to live according to these values for a while. Over time, however, the values will decay, and if they are not replaced by new values, man will truly have to face the prospect of nihilism, what Nietzsche termed "the abyss."
-Dinesh D'Souza - avaugha4, on 03/24/2009, -1/+9It is a little pricey compared to neighboring countries simply due to the exchange rate, but if you stay off of San Pedro (where some establishments flat out don't take Belizean currency, USD only) it isn't bad. Certainly much cheaper than anywhere in the States. My favorite of the Islands is Caye Caulker, but I spent 6 weeks there this summer digging, most if it in San Ignacio. Wonderful, flat out wonderful country.
- gbaderek, on 03/24/2009, -0/+8that is really scary looking, deep water scares me. id probally die in terror if i was floating in the middle of that. At the same time im kind of interested in it.
- hydrodev, on 03/24/2009, -2/+9Cave collapse? I thought it was an impact crater.
- inactive, on 03/24/2009, -0/+7***** yes.
- monkeyhoward, on 03/24/2009, -3/+10That hole seems a bit too perfect to be the result of a cave-in. Nature rarely gives us such symmetry with geological formations.
Curious....
17°18'56.55"N 87°32'4.40"W - playmusic, on 03/24/2009, -0/+7You'd pull up a hammerhead. My wife and I went to Belize on our honeymoon and met another couple that dove here. The guy said there are tons of hammerheads that just circle around the thing real deep down. He said it was very creepy, because it was dark inside... and you can see their silhouettes in the distance.
- avaugha4, on 03/24/2009, -0/+7There was a sea quest episode about that... pockets of fresh water causing ships to sink.
- Ajjah, on 03/24/2009, -1/+8No he doesn't. He rounded wrong.
- volume909, on 03/24/2009, -3/+10Did Quake borrow its logo from there?
- megamod, on 03/24/2009, -0/+7giant eel similar to the one from Super Mario but as big as the hole
