- Velena, on 03/30/2009, -3/+216I REALLY was hoping to see a picture of Tokyo with it's lights out, but I'm sure Japan was like "***** that." lol

- fcrow, on 03/30/2009, -3/+200This should confuse our friendly alien observers.
- Infowarsdotcom, on 03/30/2009, -42/+198Yeah...Earth hour...let's dim our lights...
Talk about empty gestures so people can feel less guilty about a lie the media crams down their throats.
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=1325805851 ... - mycoplasma, on 03/30/2009, -5/+152What if we did this for 8 - 10 hours every night? We could call it "sleep".
- backflipper, on 03/30/2009, -2/+146Were you just setting yourself up to post that??
- jayhawk88, on 03/30/2009, -4/+147One wonders why some of those lights are left on all the time to begin with.
- HeDiggMe, on 03/30/2009, -3/+100I really need to read captions. I was all the way down the Eiffel Tower thinking "Well damn this was a bust" before I realized you're supposed to click.
- Phych, on 03/30/2009, -0/+97Electricity doesn't light up Tokyo. What you see is the fighting aura of over 12 million people.
- drhamr, on 03/30/2009, -6/+90awesome pictures, seems like some places did a better job than others did turning off the lights though
- Easty, on 03/30/2009, -12/+84I saw this somewhere and felt it accurate to repost.
"Considering the power wasted in spooling down a power station's turbine
and then massively boosting it to get the momemtum up and running again one poxy ***** hour later, the idea that a National Grid of any country could drop by a significant wattage in such a short amount of time is truly ***** terrifying for power generators, and only shows the extreme level of utter *****-wittery environmentalists will go to in their blind desire to do some good. The massive quivering sack of bleeding hearts and trembling lips will, with their holier-than-thou switch-flicking, probably cause MORE polluting material to be released into the atmosphere and thus exacerbate the problem they're trying to draw our attention to.
It's like shooting a panda on live TV to draw attention to endangered species."
I'm concerned about the environment and still think it's a bloody stupid idea. - sockpuppets, on 03/30/2009, -2/+68You're all fools, this is the hour the zombie apocalypse has been waiting for.
FOOLS! - catalysis, on 03/30/2009, -0/+61Not to mention boogie man incidents rose 500%.
- nizzy1115, on 03/30/2009, -14/+69I wonder how much crime went up during these hours. You can see so many once fully lit parking lots are now black.
- psixaos, on 03/30/2009, -3/+55Fantastic! And if you do not read the introduction before jumping to the pics like me, you will also wonder 'hey this is a poor job..wtf!'...lol...
- ryan83189, on 03/30/2009, -1/+52Remember when that ***** used to be a whole day?
- gizram84, on 05/30/2009, -9/+57earth hour passed? i was actually gonna turn my lights off for it. bummer.
- spritom, on 03/30/2009, -2/+46Yet inside each building was 18,711ty servers, workstations, and routers still on with no users on them for a Saturday night.
nice gesture though. - phbohn2, on 03/30/2009, -0/+39earth hour: because why the ***** would you want to conserve energy for more than one hour each year?
- roxgod666, on 03/30/2009, -1/+33Decoration.
Pretty funny how our "energy crisis" can easily be solved by turning down lights that aren't needed. It's like complaining about why the electric bill is so high when you have Christmas lights on 24/7 all year. - gurudatt143, on 03/30/2009, -18/+49We should have more earth hours :)
- specialcases, on 03/30/2009, -0/+30One rebel building in Las Vegas just had to ruin the idea...
- j0hnglist, on 03/30/2009, -0/+28yup you missed it. Guess you will have to wait a full year to conserve!
- nepidae, on 03/30/2009, -2/+28I imagine you as the smallest goth kid on southpark.
- TaylorHelferty, on 03/30/2009, -2/+28As much as I agree with your statement that Earth Hour makes people think they're doing a good job (when really it's just an awareness thing that most people only think about during the event), I have to say they are taking it a step further this year. This year, they're taking the results as a "vote" to the Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen (this December, I believe). Basically to show the world leaders that entire cities and nations want some results. I still believe that it's a good gesture, and a lot of fun, for people to participate in Earth Hour, but you're right, it's not enough. Awareness is great, but action is better. So that's what they're doing with this years results.
- foofoobee, on 03/30/2009, -4/+27The point is to raise awareness more than the actual savings you get during that one hour.
- inactive, on 03/31/2009, -5/+27One hour per year = useless.
How about cities start doing that every weekday night from 1-5am? Then it would, you know, ACTUALLY MAKE A DIFFERENCE. - masamunecyrus, on 03/30/2009, -0/+22Japan doesn't usually celebrate Earth Hour because they have their own two-hour version twice a year. That said, I am surprised they don't observe a third Earth Hour with the rest of the world -- Japan is NUTS about global warming and the environment, so much so that they commonly run their office temperatures at over 85 degrees in the summer and under 65 degrees in the winter to save energy.
- brandonelliott, on 03/30/2009, -0/+21HOW DID THEY GET TO ALL THOSE PLACES IN ONE HOUR?!?!!?!?!
- Atsumori, on 03/30/2009, -5/+26It's more about getting people thinking about saving energy during the whole year, like a environmentalist new years. It's ment to be a reminder of what we should be trying to do, save energy and so forth, than a trial at saving energy in an hour.
- fcrow, on 03/30/2009, -3/+23It's symbolic.
- RomeyRome, on 03/30/2009, -1/+20I was gonna turn off the lights /
but then I got high /
then I got high /
eh - LonelyTylenoL, on 03/30/2009, -1/+20Crap....I missed it again....
- arekkusu, on 03/30/2009, -2/+21Oh we did, we just got high that day and forgot. Sorry.
- s73v3r, on 03/30/2009, -1/+19It was supposed to be for non-essential lighting, so I hope the parking lots were still lit up.
- Jews, on 03/30/2009, -1/+19Wouldn't listening to another media outlet be more *****? I mean, isn't that all that P&T is? Them telling everyone everything around them is *****, when most of the things said on that show are opinions or opinionated fact? I love that show, but I don't take it for fact. That would just be more *****.
- Dragonskies, on 03/30/2009, -1/+17Dugg for clever use of a fade effect!
- merreborn, on 03/30/2009, -2/+18I'll tell you one thing: looking at those pictures really impressed on me just how much electricity we're wasting illuminating empty buildings all night, every night.
I don't think this is as much about immediate savings, as it is inspiring people to consider just how much electricity we could be saving if we turned off a lot of these lights permanently.
If even 1% of those who participated decide to make a permanent reduction in their lighting, it will have been well worth it. - inactive, on 03/30/2009, -0/+16I have the power!
- CedEx, on 03/30/2009, -1/+17Likely because the exposure time to capture the image was longer.
- christoast, on 03/31/2009, -1/+16This is not something that is supposed to be practical. Its a symbol to show that we're aware of the problems.
*****. - BowlingStone, on 03/30/2009, -1/+16So did Boston.com hire photographers all around the world to do these before/after shots? This seems really badass for a local media outlet.
- studdenfadden, on 03/30/2009, -0/+15The guy who does the galleries for boston.com explained once that they buy all the pics from wireservies and stock photo sites, he compiles the best for placement on the site.
The last line of the description of each pic has where they bought it from and who took it, ie. "(REUTERS/Bobby Yip)" on the second pic. - franklymister, on 03/31/2009, -2/+16Right.
All those criminals in their stripey shirts and Hamburglar masks that lurk around alleys waiting to knock out an unsuspecting tourist and take their money belt must have been just WAITING for Earth Hour... - PhrosTT, on 03/30/2009, -0/+14yeah... what douchebags. "we'll be the only building lit up... it's like free advertising!"
- inactive, on 03/30/2009, -3/+17Keeping manbearpig away one light at a time
- anstice85, on 03/31/2009, -2/+15That's kinda like asking why things like the Breast Cancer Marathon take place.
Of course a group of people running around won't actually cure cancer or whatever, the point is raising awareness of a broader issue. -
