- MindTrigger, on 02/12/2008, -32/+129I will never visit Dubai. While I appreciate the amazing design work being done there, the city is built by slave labor using oil money that is soaked in blood. That whole city is the culmination of a *****-load of global evil, and a representation of nearly all that is wrong with the world. No thanks.
- inactive, on 02/12/2008, -2/+44Wow, Dubai is going to look awesome in its Decaying Empire phase.
- oOLiquidNightOo, on 02/12/2008, -4/+43we'd be able to invade even more countries.
- Fillasofe, on 02/12/2008, -9/+46Too bad normal people will never enjoy these things. Last I checked travel to Dubai required a trust fund.
- joaob, on 02/12/2008, -6/+36Modern day Babylon.
- CitizenKane, on 02/12/2008, -7/+34gorgeous.
- fareed, on 02/12/2008, -15/+42Then stay where you live. Wear your cotton shirts (made from uzbek cotton picked by children http://www.rferl.org/featuresarticle/2007/11/f0656 ... )
Eat your fruit and vegetables (again - picked by slaves - http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/s ... ) in your pure and noble environment.
I could go on. And you can't avoid my ranting nor the reason behind it. - face05, on 02/12/2008, -5/+30isn't the world suppose to end in 2012 :(
- Fallout911, on 02/12/2008, -3/+28Just don't get caught with.00000000000000000000000001% of pot on that bridge or you'll serve 4 years in pound me in the mohammed ass prison
- julianwan, on 02/12/2008, -18/+42most of the architects are american. look at the burj building, tallest in the world, built by a company out of chicago.
it's not a matter of which city is most progressive, it's which city throws around too much money to prove their global influence. - inactive, on 02/12/2008, -3/+27when was the last time you checked? because the budget now is $2 trillion.
- Bhatch514, on 02/12/2008, -2/+25It funny cause they made that lake to begin with, now they need a bridge to cross it.
Better solution, not flood that area and make a road. - tehmarko, on 02/12/2008, -10/+33just make sure to check the bottom of your shoe for microscopic traces of weed, or you'll end up in jail for several years. the place is a joke. theocracy ftl.
- hokie47, on 02/12/2008, -3/+25Sure it is really nice looking, but you have no freedoms there. Also, as soon as you leave the city, it is like traveling back 900 years. That is how the middle east is a few really nice cities surrounded by backward medieval like towns. It is what happens when less than 1% controls all the wealth.
- manogamez, on 02/12/2008, -5/+27Everyone here seems to think Dubai will crumble when their oil runs out or becomes useless. But you all ignore the fact that the country is spending all this money in order to SWITCH its economy to tourism and escape the curse of oil.
Just think, when this country is full of tourists they'll become just as Americanized as any other vacation paradise. It's a win win situation. - EBFoxbat, on 02/12/2008, -0/+22Dubai is always building. The worlds ____est ___!
- brnagi, on 02/12/2008, -11/+31If America spent less on the military, last time I checked it was $650 billion. I'm sure it could have money to fund stuff like this.
- Daiken, on 02/12/2008, -4/+24Sheesh, they have money and they want to spend it. What's the point being so grumpy about it. It really is a great city to visit.
- Daiken, on 02/12/2008, -1/+19You're assuming all normal people come from North America. One thing that makes Dubai a big attraction is that it isn't so far for a lot of people.
- aussieNickuss, on 02/12/2008, -3/+21You must live in fear.
- pintomp3, on 02/12/2008, -3/+21and the sears tower was designed by fazlur khan, a bangladeshi. so?
- Saad85, on 02/12/2008, -1/+17they probably will, just to spite the west.
i know i would. - pintomp3, on 02/12/2008, -0/+15for the lulz.
- jmas9, on 02/12/2008, -3/+17Not really. Not that much more than a trip to Europe.
- Daiken, on 02/12/2008, -1/+15They're a tourist and business town...not a world power.
- theright, on 02/12/2008, -2/+15You're correct that the architectural projects in the UAE draw upon the knowledge, expertise and resources of individuals and organisations all around the world. It's more than a little ignorant to make the sweeping claim that "most of the architects are american," however. Granted the Burj Dubai was designed by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, but the actual record-breaking construction process is being undertaken by a collaboration of contractors from across Asia, Europe and the Middle East.
The Burj al-Arab, the seven-star hotel mentioned in the article description and arguably the building that single-handedly put Dubai on the map, was designed by Atkins, a British architectural firm. The off-shore land reclamation projects like the Palm Jumeirah and the World Islands are the work of Dutch company Van Oord. - openpaledot, on 02/12/2008, -0/+13Dubai is beginning to look like something out of the Jetsons.
- Daiken, on 02/12/2008, -5/+17Wow, can you judge an entire city so quickly? Don't you realize how many great cities and nations were built upon a not so great past? Sheesh, most of America was built up on actual slave labor. The British empire too. They had oil money, they spent it, and now they don't need to rely on oil. How can you blame them? No place is perfect.
- brstilson, on 02/12/2008, -4/+16Except several hundred miles to the south.
- inactive, on 02/12/2008, -3/+15Travel to Dubai actually isn't that expensive... but I found out when I was planning my trip there one sad fact: Dubai is not the city of gold that it's claimed.
- drmangrum, on 02/12/2008, -0/+11Bridges and such fall under the sphere of state influence, not federal. America DOES have some amazing architecture.
Remeber the Golden Gate Bridge?
Remeber the Sears Tower, Empire State Building ( which was a wonder when it was constructed ), The World Trade Center before it was destroyed?
While they've been standing for a while, many of the monuments in DC are amazing works.
If your looking for American architecture that stands out, you have to step away from the government, you have to go corporate. While civic improvements are designed to be esthetically pleasing, they are designed for function and budget first. - gllopc, on 02/12/2008, -0/+11A lot of people have predicted the end of the world. So far, they've all been wrong.
- noots, on 02/12/2008, -0/+11i think they are planning ahead. If the city continues to grow like it is, those 12 lanes may come in handy.
- had3l, on 02/12/2008, -1/+12Were you actually expecting that everything would be made out of gold? No wonder you were disappointed.
- Evolutuon, on 02/12/2008, -3/+14Just go to Vegas, its the US Equivalent, plus its more affordable and fun .. oh and its the epitome of evil of course. :)
- WernerCD, on 02/12/2008, -1/+12Only part of the budget is spent on Military. The budget is 2 Trillion and 650 Billion of that is spent on Military. How would checking change the fact that if the US cut spending on Military, it would have more money for other things?
- krnldmp, on 02/12/2008, -1/+11Dubai is a giant Michael Jackson's Neverland Ranch.
- slapded, on 02/12/2008, -1/+11i predict it will end yesterday
- MadOtaku, on 02/12/2008, -1/+11So you're like that too? When ever I'm out (other cities or just downtown) and I see a cool building, I think, "Wow, that'd make awesome ruins".
- zaferk, on 02/12/2008, -1/+10Dubai is very westernized and secular for an Arabn nation. So yeah you can enjoy bacon for breakfast and wine for dinner.
- plytheman, on 02/12/2008, -6/+15Looking at how they prosecute a crumb of tree on someone's shoe, I'd say Babylon sounds about right.
- Evolutuon, on 02/12/2008, -2/+11Dubai makes its money through financial means.
- Ozzsanity, on 02/12/2008, -4/+13Yeah they could use that money building a huge military and then they could invade other countrys.
- hamobu, on 02/12/2008, -2/+11How it is your money?
- jonr, on 02/12/2008, -1/+9Yeah. This.
Just because you can afford a gold-plated RR, doesn't mean you aren't ass-backwards religious hillbilly... - augustwest30, on 02/12/2008, -15/+23Thank you for putting to words exactly what I was thinking. I can not wait until we stop using oil so that place will disintegrate back to the desert that it came from.
- trp5023, on 02/12/2008, -2/+10The whole Dubai Architectural renaissance kind of reminds me of Speer's "Germanium" or "New Berlin" of the Nazi regime. Hitler was a huge fan of roman architecture because of how much of a lasting impression it had. He wanted to build buildings so huge that people a thousand years after his death would remember Germany.
Imagine what it will be like for the archaeologists who study the ruins of Dubai in 1000 years! - Elranzer, on 02/12/2008, -2/+10Too bad by 2012 it will all be underwater.
- darkism, on 02/12/2008, -0/+8Because they can.
- zeyad, on 02/12/2008, -0/+8Thank you. I can fly to Dubai for as low as $150 (roundtrip).
