- zephc, on 11/14/2009, -5/+46'The board solicited bids from around the world, and the New Zealand site was the lowest, said Michael Freeman, the board's vice president of advertising."
As so it should be.
'He added that any scenes involving California cows will be filmed in state. "We would never misrepresent California cows by shooting them elsewhere," he said.'
So really, there is no issue here other that people liking to get huffy over nothing - Frankzulla, on 11/14/2009, -2/+41That makes perfect sense! Good thinkin', guys!
- Mujokan, on 11/14/2009, -1/+27Tastiest in all of Middle Earth!
- fury420, on 11/14/2009, -3/+25yup, nothing promotes California dairy farmers & their cows like actors on a bluescreen halfway across the world
- borez, on 11/14/2009, -1/+18It's cheaper to film there... that is all.
- magic6435, on 11/14/2009, -1/+17You sir are a ***** moron. The only reason they are shooting in New Zealand is that it's going to be the cheapest place to shoot.
- jaytek13, on 11/14/2009, -4/+17Can we get a collective "yawn"? I guess not...
Who cares? I don't know about the rest of you, but as far as cow's milk goes, when I go to the store I have a choice between skim, 1%, 2%, and whole milk. Where it comes from is never something I've thought about, nor as far as I know has the choice been presented to me. - inactive, on 11/14/2009, -1/+14Seems like a moo-t point
- Vaiper, on 11/14/2009, -1/+10I feel the same way about gasoline. I buy gas from whatever gas station is closest when my gas light comes on.
- twinklyJesus, on 11/14/2009, -2/+10The reason you don't have a job is, your reading skills SUCK.
- RizzosBack, on 11/14/2009, -1/+8Unless you're a lactating woman I don't see how there could be confusion.
- Tiak, on 11/14/2009, -1/+8Good milkcomes from happy cows, and happy cows come from New Zealand.
- twinklyJesus, on 11/14/2009, -0/+7Unions are expensive beasts to support and don't do well when your customer is price-shopping.
- hadessniper, on 11/14/2009, -18/+24Wisconsin milk is 10 times better anyhow.
- boonesfarm, on 11/14/2009, -2/+8Movies, television, and even commercials have been fleeing LA for years. I wish they would include some details about the bids in the article, so you could see the Teamster effect on the bottom line.
Your Prius and your MacBook were made in Asia. This IS a California product, but do you expect a state that issues IOUs to pay a premium to the Teamsters union? This cold have been done domestically if you could avoid the unnecessary union.
I buy locally when I can, but let's not be hypocrites. - LumberingOaf, on 11/14/2009, -5/+11Makes sense. It's not like we have a whole city dedicated to filming movies and TV shows or anything. Oh, wait.
I hope the new commercials at least have Hobbits and Orcs and *****. - smihalik, on 11/14/2009, -1/+6Then they expect consumers to choose California milk when it might cost more than other milk.
- twinklyJesus, on 11/14/2009, -2/+7LA Times is shilling for the Unions who don't get these jobs when movies, TV or commercials are filmed other places.
- odiroot, on 11/14/2009, -0/+5Obligatory Flight of the Conchords comment (because they rock the party).
- twinklyJesus, on 11/14/2009, -2/+7Ah, yes, organic...another rip-off.
- fuzzynyanko, on 11/14/2009, -1/+6So, we should drink milk from New Zealand?
- linagee, on 11/14/2009, -0/+5I get it. So when people see the commercials, they envision cows with acres of space to run around and eat grass and do whatever cows do. In the cold harsh reality though, they are in crowded barns, repeatedly milked several times per day, and fed antibiotics some of which gets into the milk.
It's the old bait-n-switch technique. - Junkyarddawg, on 11/14/2009, -1/+5It's nothing new. Progress and changing demographics mean that some areas no longer look like they're supposed to, and god knows industrial agriculture doesn't look nice. Commercials showing the idyllic English countryside are nowadays usually shot in southern France.
That said it's beyond me how the US can still allow adding antibiotics with the feed. Yeah, it speeds growth, but it also fosters multiresistant bacteria. - bluebirdgm, on 11/14/2009, -0/+4First the Power Rangers got outsourced to New Zealand, now Cows.
- ericcc, on 11/14/2009, -0/+4**sales tax.
- clouds31, on 11/14/2009, -0/+4Illegal Immigrants work at our dairy's which make milk cheaper.
Cheaper milk ftw, suck it Ohio! - ScottDaMan, on 11/14/2009, -0/+4Teletubbies?
- kiwiboyus, on 11/14/2009, -0/+3My two favorite places :) Actually a lot of California reminds me of NZ
- EarlOfLade, on 11/14/2009, -0/+3So... Happy cows actually comes from New Zealand and seemingly, happy workers don't come from California either.
Since it's California, I know what they are smoking but what are they putting in the milk? - tseddon, on 11/14/2009, -4/+7I have a feeling this article will sour the deal.
- gradient01, on 11/14/2009, -2/+5Maybe instead of paying to film more commercials urging people to drink California milk they could just lower the price of California milk? Lowering prices does seem to work ...
- inactive, on 11/14/2009, -0/+3I'd rather drink California 40's, i'm sure they could shoot commercials in Compton on the cheap.
- monvalley, on 11/14/2009, -4/+7Another example of how worthless unions are driving business away to more competitive places. Maybe if the Unions would actually require members to work ( the full scope of the job) and have competitive wages and benefits, those with jobs would embrace them. Interesting that a company would actually incur additional travel costs to avoid union workers. Tells you something about the unions, doesn't it? Remember, it's business and the rich that create and provide jobs.
- Lunarparcel, on 11/14/2009, -0/+3And the people there are also just the cutest little things, all short and stuff, with big floppy hairy feet and living in these little dug out holes in the sides of grassy knolls with rounded doors. Just the cutest little things!
- ericcc, on 11/14/2009, -1/+4Are you kidding? Food is ridiculously cheap in California and there is no sales on food.
- digitalArtform, on 11/14/2009, -0/+2Workers in countries with universal health care can afford to accept lower wages. We are simply importing their Socialism.
- j0phus, on 11/14/2009, -0/+2Yeah, I just skimmed thru the comments and wasn't paying attention. The sentiment still holds true. LA going to the other side of the planet to shoot a local commercial still results in lost jobs. Did we all forget it is a commercial for ***** milk, too? A product that doesn't need advertising. Especially considering the fact they are promoting home-grown and the majority of people can't figure out how to distinguish one carton from another.
- Mujokan, on 11/14/2009, -0/+2Well, the grass part is right. (Not just talking about Kiwiseeds -- NSFW -- http://www.dampkring.nl/8671/kiwiseeds-cannabis-se ... )
- Lunarparcel, on 11/14/2009, -0/+2Oh, but also there's that great big scary eye lookin' thing....dude, DO NOT go near that thing.
- hereticoftruth, on 11/14/2009, -3/+5For a moment there I thought they wanted to poison the New Zealanders with California milk! But I guess they want to impersonate California cows with New Zealand cows in the New Zealand habitat. Smart deception! Of course these milk producers are way beyond the concept of doing the right thing. Happy Satan.
- smihalik, on 11/14/2009, -0/+2Yeah but the point is the company chose to give the commercial contract to the lowest bidder, rather than support local business
- mikemehak, on 11/14/2009, -0/+2so they are shipping california cows to NZ to film there?
- mmittimm, on 11/14/2009, -0/+2Don't quote me here, but I'm pretty sure they're talking more about cheeses and such, as actual milk usually comes from more local sources.
- compubike, on 11/15/2009, -0/+2what is the big deal? Movies, TV shows and all commercials are filmed in locations than they reported to be in.
- MacHarborGuy, on 11/14/2009, -0/+2OMG OUT-SOURCING
- yoshiboy, on 11/14/2009, -0/+2Assuming you're female, gladly.
- digitalArtform, on 11/14/2009, -0/+1Buying Californian makes the economy of the whole state stronger. And I usually throw out the highest and lowest bids.
- digitalArtform, on 11/14/2009, -0/+1Nope. The cows are in the US.
- jimrooney, on 11/14/2009, -0/+1We won't misrepresent the cows (that would be unethical)... but... well... everything else... hell, that's fair game!
- NZhobo, on 11/14/2009, -0/+1Yeah for a second i thought they were trying to sell california milk to NZ, seemed a bit odd XD
