It was always burning
Since the world's been turning
We didn't start the fire
No we didn't light it
But we tried to fight it - everfresh59, on 05/16/2008, -2/+54Excellent power source gone to waste.....
- woofers07, on 05/16/2008, -6/+52"gas has been burning for 35 years" seems like it could be used as some sort of renewable resource or something, but what do I know.
- db0255, on 05/16/2008, -6/+51so why don't we stop the fire and get the gas?

And, for the global-warming-denial-trigger-happy, not that the outgassing referred to is hydrocarbons, not CO2. - Wynner3, on 05/16/2008, -1/+27Why the hell don't we learn about these things sooner? ***** like this should be taught in schools, in science class. I'm only 29 but I would have loved to learn about it in school. I'm glad the internet exists and digg.

- jhuebel, on 05/16/2008, -0/+12Found this information on a forum discussing the location: "It’s actually called 'Darvaza', and it is in Turkmenistan, not Uzbekistan. It’s situated in the middle of the Kara Kum desert, about 6 miles north of Darvaza."
Coordinates are 40°15'7.36"N 58°26'22.84"E. Google Maps and Google Earth don't have high resolution satellite imagery of the location, unfortunately. - FFandMMfan, on 05/16/2008, -0/+12?
Here, have mine. - glebvr, on 05/16/2008, -3/+14Nah, I think someone just got a girlfriend on Digg or something along those lines.

- purplehaze420, on 05/16/2008, -1/+12Technically, this place is not in Russia...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darvaza
"Darvaza (Turkmen language: The Gate) is a Turkmenistan village of about 350 inhabitants, located in the middle of the Kara-Kum desert, about 260 km north from Ashgabat."
"Until 1991, it was a constituent republic of the Soviet Union, the Turkmen Soviet Socialist Republic."

- funkymoose, on 05/16/2008, -0/+9wow, you don't really see how massive it is till you see the photos of people standing next to it.
- MikeonTV, on 05/16/2008, -8/+17It's called The Gate!

- FiestyPumpkin, on 05/16/2008, -1/+10Hey, did anyone bring any marshmallows?!?
That thing's frightening!!
Centralia, PA has an underground coal fire that has been burning since the days of JFK. No gaping pit of hell, though. Just a lot of cracks with noxious gas spewing out. There's a guy named Pete who sits under a tree at the intersection of town holding a sign that reads, "We love Centralia." He told me that there is no fire burning, that it was all a government conspiracy to run everyone out of town and take their property. He is mistaken, as clearly there is a huge fire raging under that town. I was standing next to a rock and the heat coming off it brunt my foot through my shoe. - shadowsurfr1, on 05/16/2008, -0/+8New comment system.
- Orion682, on 05/16/2008, -0/+8Because stopping a fire of that magnitude, which is saturated with so much fuel, is an absurdly difficult task, if it's even possible at all with modern equipment.
Hell, we can't even stop the coal fire under Centralia Pennsylvania, and that's mostly an enclosed space that's burning... - jeffmon, on 05/16/2008, -1/+8...still what?
- nickbarber, on 05/16/2008, -0/+7No.
- eeevildictator, on 05/16/2008, -0/+6link please!

- cgrado, on 05/16/2008, -0/+6Part of the upgrade i'm guessing.
- TomTruelle, on 05/16/2008, -0/+6That is some excellent gas.
- Shawn4168, on 05/16/2008, -1/+7Wow...the whole idea of that is kinda creepy...reminds me of Centralia, Pennsylvania.
