Darvaz: The Door to Hell [PIC]
englishrussia.com — The story of this place lasts already for 35 years. Once the geologists were drilling for gas. Then suddenly during the drilling they have found an underground cavern, it was so big that all the drilling site with all the equipment and camps got deep deep under the ground. None dared to go down there because the cavern was filled with gas. So they

"Until 1991, it was a constituent republic of the Soviet Union, the Turkmen Soviet Socialist Republic."

- alanocu, on 05/16/2008, -27/+10I asked a geologist about this: "Our Earth degases at tremendous rate globally. Discovered and undiscovered oil-gas fields are a very small portion of overall hydrocarbon flow going from the interior of the Earth, just remnants of the process. In some places (oil-prone area, rift structures) gas flows are more concentrated than in others. In this case, very exotic though, drilling operation caused very concentrated gas discharge that was dispersed at the territory before. Probably, cavernous limestone rocks aggravated the situation to create this exit from hell when people disturbed it."

- Wynner3, on 05/16/2008, -1/+26Why the hell don't we learn about these things sooner? ***** like this should be taught in schools, in science class. I'm only 29 but I would have loved to learn about it in school. I'm glad the internet exists and digg.
- highlyhigh, on 05/16/2008, -7/+6because our public education system is a ***** joke. most school teachers are just bunch of incompetent, not even 'has-beens', but 'cannot-becomes'. they want you to read aloud in class, copy it on a piece of paper at home, and call it an education. all that makes you become is a number crunching, suit wearing monkey who goes online and be amazed at something that would just be a footnote on nation geographic because he hasn't been shown a two bit of interesting things his whole life. im just being an *****. yeah that hole is ***** amazing and the public education system is a ***** joke.

That thing's frightening!!
Centralia, PA has an underground coal fire that has been burning since the days of JFK. No gaping pit of hell, though. Just a lot of cracks with noxious gas spewing out. There's a guy named Pete who sits under a tree at the intersection of town holding a sign that reads, "We love Centralia." He told me that there is no fire burning, that it was all a government conspiracy to run everyone out of town and take their property. He is mistaken, as clearly there is a huge fire raging under that town. I was standing next to a rock and the heat coming off it brunt my foot through my shoe.- UNDERSTAR, on 05/16/2008, -1/+1You sure the town wasn't called Silent Hill???
