- Ohnodonho, on 09/27/2009, -10/+59I didn't see any women. I hope there was no orgy.
- absolutelytrue, on 09/27/2009, -3/+30And all the seamen are happy :)
- Gareth321, on 09/28/2009, -1/+27I kept clicking pictures, waiting for the women to come. But the women never came. THE WOMEN NEVER CAME!
- FunkyWitDaSysTm, on 09/27/2009, -3/+19ooo, drunken orgies on a naval vessel. ya know, that just sounds awesome.
- ELiTe185, on 09/28/2009, -0/+14The ones you know of, or the ones you copied and pasted? http://www.history.navy.mil/faqs/faq92-3.htm
- eibiee, on 09/28/2009, -0/+12WHAT THE ***** IS GOING ON THERE?
- ChileanGoD, on 09/28/2009, -0/+10♫ I'M ON A BOAT...
- Locnar, on 09/28/2009, -1/+10WOW... My dad was in the navy during WWII. I found this card in his wallet "ancient order oi the deep" It was like a club card showing he passed over the equator on 10/1/44.. How cool is that!!! He never really talked about his time in the service. I just knew he was in the last naval Battle in WWII and he was on a lst
- TheHEARSEDRIVER, on 09/28/2009, -1/+8I crossed the Line for the first time in 1982 aboard the USS Duncan. In addition to other abuses ("The Baby", the coffin, etc.) I still remember crawling through a 10 foot bag of garbage (the ***** chute) following my Division Officer who was vomiting as he crawled. Good times? No. But it was an experience.
I got to dish out the abuse on deployments in 1985, '87, '89, '94, and '96, but those initiations where mild in comparison.
It's just a tradition to break up the monotony of six months away from home. - himthatwas, on 09/28/2009, -0/+6They never do.
- cruik, on 09/28/2009, -1/+7I don't see any orgies. I think it's just a San Francisco writer looking a little too deeply and seeing what he wants to see.
- CapnSlam, on 09/28/2009, -0/+5i feel robbed
- drew101, on 09/28/2009, -1/+5it's like a birthday, highschool graduation, wedding ceremony. Take part or walk through it, you get out what you put in to it. You can just go along, for the ride. Or you can throw your head back, laugh, cut loose and enjoy it and maybe feel that at the end of it you are truly changed. (but i'm self-medicating right now)
- nullmoon, on 09/28/2009, -0/+4I got to #7. Once my eyes started to bleed, I thought it might be a good idea to stop.
- stabbity, on 09/28/2009, -0/+4Achievement Unlocked!

- Valyn, on 09/28/2009, -1/+4Especially now-a-days. Its a joke. The best part was screwing with the guys who refused to take part.
- SwiftKick34, on 09/28/2009, -1/+4Looks like a good time

Century Club
Drinking 100 shots of beer in 100 minutes. - Trexor, on 09/28/2009, -0/+2well that was homoerotic.....
AWESOME!!! - wilf_brim, on 09/28/2009, -1/+3These ceremonies have been scaled way, way, way back. Some ships don't even do them anymore: COs are afraid: anything that could be misconstrued is going to cost them their command and career. Why risk it?
- Skab, on 09/28/2009, -2/+4Yeah they stopped the whole motor oil, running through garbage, egg shells stuff due to pussies claiming HAZING and other bs. It still happens but not like how it USED to be.
- Nighthawke, on 09/28/2009, -0/+2Back in those days, homosexuality really didn't sink in as much as it has today. The fun times they had were really fun without all the sexuality. I mean, hell, when do you get the opportunity to get your head shaved by a blindfolded "Old China Hand"?
The navy back then meant something, being on board the bantam frigates, the powerful destroyers, to the (semi-obsolete) lords of the seas, battleships! You had the right to sport that tattoo you got at Frisco, or Pearl, and you showed it proudly. You were in the middle of a bar brawl that started over some almond-eyed girl wearing a slinky number that some hairy-chested army type decided that he wanted a piece of her. He cut in while you were dancing with her. You put a bottle over his head, after pulling off his hat!
You were either at sea or at your port that fateful Sunday, listening to the radio or on morning watch, trying to hear what Honolulu radio was broadcasting, until they broke in and announced The Attack. You recall the trauma you felt, then the deep resolve you were going to cram all of the ordinance your ship was carrying down Tojo's throat.
And by God you did just that.
The Rite of Passage, no matter how watered down it is, is the Right of every squid that crosses that latitude the first time, be either Naval aviator, sailor, or submariner. - X9001, on 09/28/2009, -0/+2You should see the theater students
- Natru3al, on 09/28/2009, -1/+3I was in the Navy and from what the older sailers would tell me, nope there were no women. Just men dressed up in their wives underpants.
- jsffive, on 09/28/2009, -0/+2Ask any Chief in the U.S. Navy what "loading the torpedo tube" means. It's so embarrassing, you can't even find it on the Internet.
- DulcetTone, on 09/28/2009, -0/+2My dad's photos from the navy (on a destroyer in the Korean War) have many photos of the crossing the line antics. This is something many (all?) navies did, and along pretty much the same lines.
- eatinshramps, on 09/28/2009, -1/+3lol wut
- DoctorPeptalk, on 09/28/2009, -1/+3sounds like a party
- adremali, on 09/27/2009, -8/+9kinda gay
- UNL1M1T3D, on 09/28/2009, -3/+4I was thinking the same thing.
- URnotheonly1, on 09/28/2009, -5/+6Shellback here.... It's really no big deal if you are not a pussy
- Virgule, on 09/28/2009, -0/+1:click: oh *****-- :click: :click: :click: IM NOT GAY :click: :click: :click: :click:
- paganarmand, on 09/28/2009, -1/+2It's alittle more then kinda gay, picture # 30 is a guy jerking off other guy.
- microview2007, on 09/28/2009, -0/+1Oh oh, looks like someone wet their panties and sat in the chaplains office during the rite of passage. What a puss.
- rac1234, on 09/27/2009, -0/+1Here's the article that goes with it. Not much information there either: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/g/a/2 ...
- sClubDevin, on 09/28/2009, -5/+6no *****
- MacGyver2210, on 09/28/2009, -2/+3Being drunk and partying is hardly an orgy. Buried for inaccuracy and sensationalist title.
- URnotheonly1, on 09/28/2009, -2/+3for the powder puff fleet of today, it's as ruff as they see it. apparently you too
- zoomaKabu, on 09/28/2009, -1/+2Writer looks at pictures of dozens of sailors and immediately thinks "orgy". Only in San Francisco.
- Stochio, on 09/28/2009, -0/+1Lieutenant Dan is in row 1.
- microview2007, on 09/28/2009, -0/+1I did the same year on the USS Ranger. Kissing the (mostly naked) fat man's belly that was slimmed with nasty tasting ***** was the worst of it. That and the flogging. The rest is just a mind f*ck. Proud to be a Shellback and have stories to tell.
- Nighthawke, on 09/28/2009, -0/+1The order of the blue noses were usually reserved for the "nucs", our nuclear submarines. Few vessels would dare venture above the circle deliberately.
- jmones, on 09/28/2009, -0/+1An orgy of drunkenness is not the same as a drunken orgy.
- geodebug, on 09/28/2009, -0/+1Cue the Village People: "In the Navy..."
- TheHEARSEDRIVER, on 09/28/2009, -2/+2I guess it was "hazing" but it was fun to be able to say you'd done it. One of many "traditions" that have gone the way of political correctness.
Another was the Chief's initiation. I think I participated in the last one of those in 1997. No alcohol, but tons of disgusting things to eat! Yuck! - igbw, on 09/28/2009, -4/+4only thing that comes to mind is the village people singing 'in the navy'.
- mjd420nova, on 09/28/2009, -1/+1A long established, time honored ritual rite of passage for all sailors. Not to worry, what appears to be garbage is actually leftover food from that days mess and other food stuffs. The oldest crew member is Neptune, the youngest, the royal baby. Pollywogs are the un-initiated and shellbacks are those who have crossed before. All the photos appear to be black and white so must be from WWII and Korea. All mine are from Viet Nam and in color. Not to be confused with the order of blue noses for crossing the Artic Circle, another ritual.
- pelican2164, on 09/28/2009, -1/+1How informative. Would you like to come to my par...oh, my signal is breaking up.
