- MissOthmar, on 10/21/2009, -1/+10If airlines can get as creative with technology as they’ve gotten with the myriad of new nickel-and-dime fees, perhaps they’ll demonstrate efficiencies at something other than fleecing customers...
- hbyrne, on 10/21/2009, -1/+9Might make flying greener, but easier or faster? That would be a dream.

- cha5e, on 10/22/2009, -0/+4I used to work in IT for an airline. I worked on an interesting project that dealt with gate optimization. Our hub airport had 3 concourses, i.e. it was shaped kind of like the letter E, with the gates along the horizontal bars. Obviously it was quicker for an aircraft to go to a gate near the end of a concourse, instead of taxiing all the way down the "alley" and back. There were also rules such as you couldn't have 2 757s parked next to each other, because they'd bump wings, so you had to go 757, 737, 757, 737. Or of course you could just line up a bunch of 737s. (If I haven't made it obvious, 757s are bigger than 737s.) It had a nice GUI where the x-axis was time stretching into the future and the gates were along the y-axis, and you could manually drag-and-drop future flights from one gate to another, or let it auto-optimize. The previous system in place was a pencil and a notebook. It was a fun project, and really followed the 80/20 rule - really easy, until an incoming flight was delayed, or an aircraft blew a tire at the gate, or something like that. Anyway, then the airline went bankrupt :(

Yea, I'd say IT can do it. - absentmindedjwc, on 10/22/2009, -0/+1only if, in the process, any liquids are in a 3.4 ounce bottle that fit in a 1 quart sized clear plastic bag.
- Brassbud, on 10/22/2009, -0/+1What is it?
- Digger1123, on 10/22/2009, -0/+1When it comes to automated baggage, the one real attempt I have seen is at Denver International, where it was plagued by problems from its opening. United ended up being the only one to use it, and they shut it down a few years back because it was costing 1 million bucks a month in maintenance.
- Vaiper, on 10/22/2009, -0/+1The ending of your story made me sad. :(
- sapphirecut, on 10/22/2009, -0/+1indeed a dream, but a possible one
