Apparently their FEMA is run better than ours. - mmijatov, on 12/02/2008, -2/+18Am I the only one who thought there was a connection to the game Second Life?

- MrHammer, on 12/03/2008, -2/+9Homeless people on Second Life? ..er trains on second life? What? Trains with Second Life for homeless people?
- vicsvenge, on 12/03/2008, -0/+7I think this is a fantastic idea! Of course this isn't a permanent shelter for homeless people but it's a great temporary solution to housing people.
- mitthuman, on 12/03/2008, -0/+6(sigh) damn their efficient ways.
- scoottie, on 12/03/2008, -1/+7thats the part where the Beijing police are beating the crap out of a homeless guy
- gz2nyc, on 12/03/2008, -0/+6350 diggs and no one has corrected these comments? These shelters are not for bums. They are for earthquake victims rendered homeless from the Sichuan earthquake in May. The article even mentioned so near the bottom. I can't believe how short people's memory spans are.
- ksalminen, on 12/03/2008, -0/+5Atleast they DO something with their old stuff.
- jazino, on 12/03/2008, -1/+6You mean they should just try to shoo them out of site like we do in the US?
- araza13, on 12/03/2008, -0/+5Bums attacked by flying penises in subway?
- brandita, on 12/03/2008, -0/+5Subway: Sleep Fresh.
- icechen1, on 12/03/2008, -2/+7The bottom left part of http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/gizmodo/2008 ... looks 'shopped.
- ifruit, on 12/03/2008, -2/+6What was photoshopped out of the bottom left corner?
- ProfessorVanHel, on 12/03/2008, -0/+4Am I the only one that thinks this is an ingenious idea? At least the homeless aren't left out on the streets. I've even been in Hong Kong and I've seen some homeless people living in the underpasses that lead to the metros which close at a certain time at night. They're all lounging around in the tunnels with cardboard boxes and all their personal belongings. But that was when the temp was pretty high.
- LonesomeFighter, on 12/03/2008, -0/+3NYC makes coral reefs
- faizal5k, on 12/03/2008, -2/+5When I was a little kid, I always wanted a subway car as an awesome fort :(
- erikwithaknotac, on 12/03/2008, -0/+3Ninja Turtles did it!
- sgvprelude, on 12/03/2008, -1/+4these aren't bums, they are homeless victims of the earthquake.
- broh, on 12/03/2008, -0/+3It is much better than their other option

- mhjeon, on 12/03/2008, -0/+2unpredictable country, China
- BrokenCircle, on 12/03/2008, -1/+3No Ninja Turtle references?
- Bingger, on 12/03/2008, -0/+2Great idea, Great China!
- Uberpog, on 12/03/2008, -0/+2Yeah man, i thought this was a surprisingly humane and resourceful act by the Chinese government. In America the bums have to beg for money for a subway ticket before they can fall asleep on a subway train.
- erichh, on 12/03/2008, -0/+2
Most often subway cars don't just get thrown into landfills. The amount of metal in subway cars is much too valuable to just throw into a landfill. The old Redbirds the New York City subway disposed of from 2001 to 2003 were stripped and dumped off the coast of the Carolinas to create artificial reefs. More often, like cars, these relics get fully stripped by their operator for spare parts that are usually interchangeable with their existing rollingstock, then smelted into raw materials to make new subway cars. Please don't lead people to believe that railways are so irresponsible - that's irresponsible reporting :P - JohnnyHu, on 12/03/2008, -3/+5These outdated trains were provided as temporary shelters for people who lost their homes in the Sichuan Earthquake, retard.
Did you even read the article at all???? - JMellissa, on 12/03/2008, -0/+2Not a bad idea to reuse old disused subway cars.
- googlyguy, on 12/03/2008, -0/+2Nah, it's just some blurry dirt.
- elscorcho8806, on 12/03/2008, -0/+1haha this is definitely straight out of teenage mutant ninja turtles 2: the secret of the ooze. i didn't know they were asian, hmm..
- inactive, on 12/03/2008, -0/+1I HAVE a home and I don't even get an automatic door.
/sigh - reposado, on 12/03/2008, -1/+2my post was sarcastic.
only a retard takes it seriously. - reposado, on 12/03/2008, -2/+3How can there be homeless people in a communistic society?
Dont all work for the great government and in return the great government provide for all? - Tonkatsu, on 12/03/2008, -1/+2Precursor to the DC Metro? Nevermind, I'm usually accosted for money on my way off it anyway.
- duggdowncatisad, on 12/03/2008, -3/+4As opposed to the New York City subway, whose cars are used as homeless shelters even before they're retired from service?
- Asianwaste, on 12/03/2008, -1/+1No I'm sure a lot of them are bums
- chadgrandy, on 12/03/2008, -2/+1I thought the US government saved them to give to to survives or horrible natural disasters?
- Asianwaste, on 12/03/2008, -4/+2That's funny, our subways have a second use as homeless shelters.
- akchrs, on 12/03/2008, -4/+2They can feed and clothe them with Panda's.
- phpld, on 12/03/2008, -7/+4I assume this makes it easy to relocate the homeless whenever something important like the Olympics is coming to town. They can even advertise a special dinner the night of the move!
- Fritzed, on 12/03/2008, -6/+3China isn't communist. Officially, it is a Social Republic, but really it is closest to a fascist state. The power is controlled by a few unelected leaders who do very little to provide anything back to the lower classes.
It wouldn't surprise me if these "Homeless" are actually the same people displaced to build the olympic village. Those who were forced to move were promised a new residence of equivalent value, they never got it. -
