- Rotzooi, on 08/09/2008, -19/+879It's real. China plonked walls in front of the less affluent neighborhoods to shield the Olympic visitors from the less attractive realities of everyday Beijing life.
- normo1234, on 08/10/2008, -39/+627OMG! China has poor people! Thank god we live in America, where this sort of inhumane ***** doesn't exist.
[/sarcasm] - Gnar04, on 08/09/2008, -25/+508shopped or not, pretty accurate representation of the situation
- sonycam, on 08/10/2008, -113/+440I'm so fed up of the whole China bashing thing. What most westerners fail to realise is that just 50 years ago food was a real issue and people were starving to death in China. There's been so much progress made in the country by the government over recent decades that the general population doesn't really care about issues of censorship. Now you have a bunch of 'we know best' westerners protesting for their human rights and freedom. I'm not Chinese, but I think the protesters should stick to their own failing governments... human rights? Guantanamo, censorship? CCTV... it just seems fashionable to be anti-China right now.
- Frejesal, on 08/10/2008, -9/+274Those are just part of the Olympic event, "leap over the wall and land on cinder blocks"
- chililili, on 08/10/2008, -3/+247We do that in Mexico too, that's why I believe it to be real.
- gubatron2, on 08/09/2008, -22/+195mirror in case it gets censored
http://mybloop.com/go/eqAXjX - davidjunit, on 08/10/2008, -4/+161Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain!
- embeemb, on 08/09/2008, -2/+153Could be, but being real is not far-fetched IMO
- inactive, on 08/10/2008, -7/+134NYC as recently as 1995: http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=402 ...
And has anyone seen Detroit recently?
Glass houses, stones, and all that. - cluckcluck, on 08/10/2008, -3/+126It's not like this is something unique to the Beijing Olympics. Lots of cities that have hosted the Olympics have made efforts to hide the "bad". Of course it's deplorable, but it's not just China. Does anyone remember all the outrage over the homeless being bussed out of Atlanta for the '96 games?
- jmanfivek, on 08/10/2008, -28/+146I'm confused, what about this picture is sad? That someone doesn't have a washing machine? Give me a ***** break. There are people in a lot worse shape than that.
- Gandhilion, on 08/10/2008, -5/+114very bizarre they would put a space in between the wall so you could conveniently take a picture
- mrzod, on 08/10/2008, -36/+127happens to the US too: we just shove the poor under the rugs
- SemiSarcastic, on 08/10/2008, -18/+91The Dream: to have more than one meal per day.
- blackrich, on 08/10/2008, -25/+97Yeah, there's definitely nowhere that looks like this in, oh, say, Georgia, for example. Don't be such an asshat.
- mooninite, on 08/10/2008, -17/+88Welfare?
Medicare?
Homeless shelters?
Thousands of charities?
Yeah, the US sure treats poor people like crap. /sarcasm - madcat033, on 08/10/2008, -7/+71You think that's sad? Try going down to the border of Tijuana and San Diego. If you go on a hill, you can see on one side of the wall is green grass and upscale buildings, and on the other side is loaded with devastation and slums and run down buildings.
It's an incredibly stark difference for what is essentially an artificial line. - blurrie, on 08/09/2008, -37/+98real or shopped?
- LucasVB, on 08/10/2008, -3/+64It's very real. China literally put up these colorful posters and walls with happy images and messages across Beijing in order to mask itself from the pollution and misery in front of the world. It's pretty ***** horrible, yes.
- gavorkian, on 08/10/2008, -7/+68"This is sad?" Really?
I mean I am seeing a motorized bike and someone going about their day-to-day chores.... I see worse everyday going to work.
That said, I think it's a solid photo.... but sad? .....Really? - 955701, on 08/10/2008, -2/+59But that happens here too. Just head to downtown Atlanta near the Underground. They've been trying to get suburbanites to come there for years to spend money. But you don't have to go far to see things that would make you cry.
- Cretius0, on 08/10/2008, -8/+55Two worlds, one dream.
- Gmizzle, on 08/10/2008, -18/+64Terrible!!!!!!!!!!! Poverty next to the rich...OMG! America got rid of such inhumane conditions a hundred years ago. We don't have poor people in America anymore. Savage orientals!!!
- Dylson, on 08/10/2008, -7/+50Everything u see on the internet is on the internet.
- nick7er, on 08/09/2008, -9/+52The dream ain't happenin' apparently...
- inactive, on 08/10/2008, -3/+45Well beijing has floating clothes, so they must be better off!
- fpaudon, on 08/10/2008, -3/+44Having lived in (several cities in) China and in Galveston, Texas:
I'm not casting aside the fact that there are people who live in poverty. I'm saying that maybe its time to fix our own problems before demanding that China be ashamed of the same problems that we are facing. - spacewhale, on 08/10/2008, -0/+40I wonder what native american indians have to say about that.
- fpaudon, on 08/10/2008, -25/+63Washington D.C. anyone? Even the U.S. Capital has its extreme affluent area and its slums. I guess its just trendy to be Anti-China these days.
- zombiecarlin, on 08/10/2008, -1/+33So what? if Philadelphia hosted an Olympics they would put a wall around the North of the city.
- chillmandan, on 08/10/2008, -2/+34I love how appalled everyone gets at this, as if this is anything new. in 1996 Atlanta bussed the homeless out of the city for three weeks. Not to say poverty shouldn't be addressed, but come on people, this isn't a new concept.
- inactive, on 08/10/2008, -2/+31But I see your mum in RL too :p
- Sakumi, on 08/10/2008, -13/+41Yea, because Obama is clearly Chinese and wanting to do the same to our country!
Your comment made me feel pity for you lol. - Fanboy88, on 08/10/2008, -15/+43OMG, they have poor people in China. Those savages!
Why are Americans so xenophobic? Can't we all just get along? - jasonpoon, on 08/10/2008, -8/+36According to westerners, China is probably the worst place on earth. I know we still have a lot to do, but you should realize how much China has improved in just a few decades. Poverty is not a China exclusive.
- Sogui, on 08/10/2008, -21/+48There's a certain point to that, but saying "Hey you guys water boarded some terrorists a few years ago and use video surveillance you have no right to tell us how we beat our political dissidents to death! Our people can eat now!"
It is however, very fashionable for countries with atrocious human rights records to say "Oh yea sure we murdered a few thousand protesters and have 90% of the internet censored, but look at you and your record, so just leave us be!"
~Signed Sudan, Myanmar, China, etc..... - Thomaslee3, on 08/10/2008, -5/+33yes, China is still a very poor country dispite what you se on tvs. Their income per capital is 10 times less than ours here in the US.
As a result, their labor is inexpensive and hence manufacturers set up factories there to produce goods for us to consume here in the west where the cost of labor is much higher.
Despite having raised 300 million people out of poverty over the past 20-30 years, the country still has 900 million people in the country side still to go. - inactive, on 08/10/2008, -7/+32No, just segregate them in ghettos, terrorize them with local police forces, and limit opportunities for upward mobility. That's the American way, right? Ignorant prick.
- mordak, on 08/10/2008, -4/+28You never know do you?
- cryptomystic, on 08/10/2008, -9/+32Americans have short memories and a biased view of the world, most can't even locate China on the map.
- inactive, on 08/10/2008, -21/+44What is so sad about this? Like America is any better
- inactive, on 08/10/2008, -9/+33happens in Canada too: we just throw the poor on the streets with no help whatsoever.
See? I can make baseless accusations as well. - irollupstairs, on 08/10/2008, -10/+33two girls, one cup
- bmson, on 08/10/2008, -2/+24Looks like LA
- Jesse, on 08/10/2008, -3/+25Hear that fellas? There's no bricks randomly lying about anywhere *he's* been. I guess we can close the book on poverty in the US then.
You ***** idiot. - inactive, on 08/10/2008, -8/+30Having been to (several places in) China:
NOT EVEN CLOSE.
I honestly hope you're just ignorant because if you have the slightest clue how things really are you're a damn liar.
I don't say that in defense of America, but in defense of the Chinese people who live in those slums that you cast aside as just-the-same like it doesn't even matter. - Gogogo111, on 08/10/2008, -1/+22Uhh are those clothes floating?
- someguy92, on 08/10/2008, -1/+21I can see them too, all 376380 of them.
- LucasVB, on 08/10/2008, -2/+21Don't turn it into a non-argument. It's horrible anywhere. This year, it happens to be China, so deal with it.
Also, I'm not even in the USA. -
