- Hetman, on 01/06/2009, -61/+702Actually that advertisment seems more agnostic than atheist. I think an atheist bus sign would say there is no God. Instead of saying There's probably no God.
- ironiridis, on 01/06/2009, -117/+478I donated to this. :)
- Alheithinn, on 01/06/2009, -61/+377Nothing wrong with this. I'm sure Christians will see it as an attack but it is equally true that if this IS an attack, then Christianity is also guilty of attacking atheists (and the rest of us) by insisting that they alone have access to some Capital-T Truth and to the divine.
Time for Christians to stop whining and deal with the fact that there are many other religions out there and that everybody has a right to their beliefs. I'm a polytheist, and signs like this don't offend me. They're just an expression of an opinion.
If I could gather up the money I'd have billboards advertising the idea that the gods are many. It's nothing to get excited about. - emecks, on 01/06/2009, -59/+275Personally, I'd rather know whether or not there is a bus on its way... and God alone seems to know that ;)
- fishpen0, on 01/06/2009, -19/+228I am Christian and I have no problem with this type of advertisement. Personally I don't care what religion (or lack there of) you are, as long as you aren't killing anybody why should I care? I think people are beginning to take their religions too seriously, especially considering that most of them don't even know the basics of the religions that they are following.
- oboshoe, on 01/06/2009, -17/+180Thats alot of money to spend on something you don't believe in.
- VAXcat, on 01/06/2009, -2/+152 I don't believe in buses.
- skeen07, on 01/06/2009, -7/+148If 90% of the world collected stamps, 10% of people would think it was ***** stupid. All the time we would hear about ***** stamps. There would be ***** stamp channels on TV. Stamp collecting sects, ***** stamp preachers, mega stamp stadiums.
Currency would have, "In Stamps We Love" on them. People would hand you annoying ***** flyers about stamps, and tell you bad things would happen to you if you didn't collect stamps.
There would be wars, about which stamp archival methods are best. Millions of people over human history would have been murdered. Rape, torture, all kinds of abuse, slavery, it goes on and on.
I think that if the non-stamp collectors got together, and decided to raise a little bit of money, to put a sign on a bus that said, "Stamps suck. Get on with your life.", it wouldn't be too unreasonable. Or they're simply being militant. :) - TheBadWolf, on 01/06/2009, -33/+169I've read this article four times on Digg. I get the point.
- StaticThunder, on 01/06/2009, -21/+132Its arguable. Agnostics generally fall into the 50% or 'nobody knows but there's no reason there COULDN'T be a God' camp. Atheists are more in the 0.00000000000000000...% camp. Its never 0. Its just fantastically unlikely. So, there really really really in all likelihood probably is no YHWH. But that doesn't fit on a bus.
I'm agnostic about the possibility of god-like things whose characteristics we don't attempt to define; the great programmer who wrote the simulation that is reality, alien intelligences of extraordinary powers, who-knows ... I just know YHWH is stupid, has no evidence supporting his existence, and if real, undeserving of worship. We would be actively working to destroy such a despotic creator. - c07g, on 01/06/2009, -13/+113"Probably"- not going crazy and saying there is no God.
"so stop worrying and enjoy life"- That's more than anything I've heard from any religion. Religions say to worry about God's "wrath" and that only through faith and belief in God I can actually enjoy life.
I would prefer this bus million times over those posters people make of damnation, fear, and every love or scare tactic religions normally use. - 4NDr01D, on 01/06/2009, -24/+122Wish we could see some of those billboards stateside !
- bratterscain, on 01/06/2009, -17/+109A prick? For advertising their opinions?
Tell me how you're not doing the same? - hauntedchippy, on 01/06/2009, -12/+99It's really odd that people (probably those damn persecuted christians again) are complaining about why the money wasn't given to charity.
You all know how much money the Vatican is sitting on right? - StaticThunder, on 01/06/2009, -11/+90How is an advertisement, 'forcing'.
- lebatte, on 01/06/2009, -10/+82I live without God (atheism) because there probably isn't a God. There isn't any proof that God doesn't exist, so I can't make bold claims like "There is no God."
- ddazska, on 01/06/2009, -15/+86good man
Also, before people start freaking out...
Take a look up at the giant crosses plastered on our highways. It's pretty much the same thing. Only difference is they won't even entertain "probably" as an option. - Batfishy, on 01/06/2009, -2/+68@amused - where do you get "hate" from those statements? That's your word, that's your problem.
- r250r, on 01/06/2009, -3/+68There are various definitions of agnostic and atheist. I used to consider myself agnostic, but after considering the fact that I am certain the "god" described in the catholic bileble cannot exist, I decided that atheism was probably a better description for my beliefs.
I think the phrasing of the ads was to encourage the reader to think. - inactive, on 01/06/2009, -8/+70Yeah while I drove 300 miles yesterday I passed 7 different billboards saying I needed to be saved by Jesus.
The most offensive saying "GET A LIFE" "LET JESUS INTO YOUR LIFE"
So as far as I am concerned you religious nuts can grow a ***** pair, or shut the hell up. - oboshoe, on 01/06/2009, -3/+63pffff.
Every third person in the middle east is named Muhammad. - inactive, on 01/06/2009, -2/+62Well, if you put "there is no god" on buses, people would regard you more as the equivalent of a troll than as someone with a point. Mostly when someone bluntly says, "there is no god" it's used to piss of religious people.
Presenting it with a "probably" gives it a much easier approach, so it's almost like a question the person has to ponder rather than a state of brutal facts that one must accept or deny. - mrgarci1, on 01/06/2009, -10/+68Well played - FTA "the modest £5,500 target was met within minutes and more than £140,000 has now been donated since the launch in October."
And all that without someone jabbing a basket on a stick in anyone's face! - JoshuaGross, on 01/06/2009, -2/+57I think you mean Allah. Ya gotta be pretty dense to deny the existence of Muhammad.
- dronesixtyten, on 01/06/2009, -1/+53You guys didn't really read the article, did you?
"Some atheist supporters of the campaign were disappointed that the wording of the adverts did not declare categorically that God does not exist, although there were fears that this could break advertising guidelines.
Prof Dawkins, the renowned evolutionary biologist and author of The God Delusion, said: "I wanted something stronger but with hindsight I think it's probably a good thing because it makes people think. It's just food for thought – people will have conversations in pubs when they see these buses."" - hauntedchippy, on 01/06/2009, -1/+53Ones subject to British advertising laws. If you assert something, you must back it up.
- dvpower, on 01/06/2009, -2/+53@amused - of course athiests can't hate God, since they don't believe that he exists. If they hate anything (and I think hate is far too strong), it is the idea of God, not the person/alien him/her/itself.
- StaticThunder, on 01/06/2009, -6/+56Buddhists generally don't care if there is a God. You can cross that one off the list.
- 3toe, on 01/06/2009, -7/+57Calling Atheism a belief is like calling bald a hairstyle.
- ironiridis, on 01/06/2009, -6/+52This campaign is about discussion. Hence "probably". Nobody is being told they're going to hell, or that they're a bad person, or that someone died for them and thus they should feel really crappy.
It's a mechanism for breaking through the status-quo of self deprecation, shame, and misery that is the limbo between an assured "salvation" and an assured "void". :) - aduzik, on 01/06/2009, -1/+45Now now, the pope *needs* those billions of dollars to improve the world by using his power to keep proper education and birth control out of the hands of millions of people. As you might imagine, oppressing that many people takes a lot out of a person, so it's nice to know you have a gilded palace to go home to at night.
- nonchai, on 01/06/2009, -0/+43I am an atheist but dugg you up for such a reasonable and civilised post.
Have a nice day :) - AmusedToDeath, on 01/06/2009, -1/+43Whether you believe in them or not, they still exist.
- jsp123, on 01/07/2009, -0/+41And all of the stamp lovers would deny the theory of email, and would not want it taught in computer class.
- diggdiggerid, on 01/06/2009, -1/+41An atheist is someone who lacks (a-) a belief in a god (-theist). End of story. It doesn't matter if you think God MIGHT exist or god USED to exist but died or it doesn't matter if god exists. If you can't say "I believe in God" then you are an atheist, period.
Most agnostics are also atheists. - tacroy, on 01/06/2009, -1/+41Hey, according to the story, Christians AREN'T whining or complaining about this. In fact they welcomed it and in fact some religious groups donated towards it.
"The campaign has even been welcomed by religious groups for increasing the profile of debate about faith, and although there was tight security outside the launch event by the Royal Albert Hall, the campaigners have not received any threats from fundamentalists.
Paul Woolley, director of Theos, a theology think tank which donated £50 to the cause, said: "The posters will encourage people to consider the most important question we will ever face in our lives." - diggdiggerid, on 01/06/2009, -10/+46no you just don't know what atheist means.
- curtisag, on 01/06/2009, -8/+44Stop abusing your children by teaching them about God before they can fully comprehend the concept.
- WiretapStudios, on 01/06/2009, -3/+38The bus is going to come regardless of if you pray or not.
- EarlOfLade, on 01/06/2009, -8/+43What?
Homosexuality is a choice?
A huge ***** [citation needed]! - Whaines, on 01/07/2009, -1/+36Someone donate this guy a dictionary.
- smuirhead, on 01/06/2009, -2/+37Whoaahh, hold your horses there ...
I didn't see one mention of Christians in this article or any quotes from Christians who were opposed to this.
In fact, I saw this:
"The campaign has even been welcomed by religious groups for increasing the profile of debate about faith ... the campaigners have not received any threats from fundamentalists."
And since when are Christians the only people who believe in God? What about Muslims, etc? Are you so sure Christians "will see this as an attack", or are you just spouting anti-christian nonsense because you can? (or because this is Digg?)
- KenSPT, on 01/06/2009, -16/+51I'm not an Athiest, but I'm most definitely not religious; I'm on the fence about alot of that stuff.
Anyways, I have no problem with this at all. The people who would complain about this wouldn't have an issue if a church took out an ad on the side of a bus preaching the existence of God, why can't people who disagree have the same right to preach what they believe? - DouglasQ, on 01/06/2009, -17/+52Makes me proud to be British
- wedges, on 01/06/2009, -0/+34i'm only burying you because you didn't seem to understand the OP, not because you are a dick.
- mlukas, on 01/07/2009, -1/+34Dont't you think that the last thing jesus would like to see if he come back someday is a cross?
- StaticThunder, on 01/06/2009, -5/+38"How is holding church services Sunday mornings and giving to the community 'forcing'?"
I never said those things were. Who are you arguing with? - WasabiBomb, on 01/06/2009, -0/+32Why the heck would I waste time hating someone who doesn't exist? That's a pretty silly premise, AmusedToDeath.
Now, if you look at the Old Testament, God's a vengeful, petty bastard. If he really did exist, I wouldn't hate him- I'd fear him. - neonoodle, on 01/06/2009, -0/+31@guntario - what actions? Healthy debate? Billboard's on buses? What attacks are you referring to? Should atheists just sit idly by and be persecuted for their beliefs by religious people like they have for thousands of years? Thanks, but no thanks.
- poog99, on 01/06/2009, -3/+34Thank you. Now if only the evangelicals could get this message. Heck, without evangelicals, maybe we'll be thought of in a better way.
