- BTConan, on 05/14/2009, -2/+62We should build robots to clean up all that trash. Small, cute robots.

- acrodev, on 05/14/2009, -0/+37Sure, let me just unwrap this plastic wrap, take it out of this cardboard box, and pop up the plastic spout for you. Would you like me to ship it to you wrapped in bubble wrap?
- poogy21, on 05/14/2009, -2/+36These kids don't deserve to be living in these conditions. Very sad.

- marmotjmarmot, on 05/14/2009, -1/+20Too much garbage in your face? There's plenty of space out in space! BnL StarLiners leaving each day. We'll clean up the mess while you're away.

- carbonetc, on 05/14/2009, -1/+6Much of this is probably the trash of the wealthy who did pay the bill. When they make it magically disappear, this is where it goes.

you're an idiot. - caution, on 05/14/2009, -1/+5I cant open the link but this reminds me of a place I saw outside Manilla, RP. A few years ago, they had a landslide of garbage (think Idiocracy, but real and not funny) that killed a few families living in there. Also, I hope they included the kids in India who burn discarded electronics (from various contries) to get a few grams of valued metals. The fumes are so horrible.
- louisut, on 05/14/2009, -1/+5as shocking as those pics are, americans produce that amount many times over, only it's buried. out of sight, out of mind.

- esc27, on 05/14/2009, -0/+4Helps to explain the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Imagine much of that river pollution eventually reaching the ocean.
- toekneebullard, on 05/14/2009, -1/+5The problem isn't just laziness, it's lack of education, and cultural norms. Some people just refuse to change.
My father was a Army Ranger, and he served several missions educating poor people on proper healthcare and community building (don't piss up river from your drinking source and such). He'd spend weeks teaching people how to run a clean well, how to properly dispose of waste, stuff like that. Then they'd leave, return a month later, and people are ***** 50 yards up stream from where people get drinking water. Some people just refuse to change. They've accepted their debilitated lifestyle as the way things are, and they don't believe personal change can make any difference. - Tddupre, on 05/14/2009, -0/+3George Carlin On Germs

And me...I just work in a "green" industry, where the company I'm working for is posting record profits in a recession. So go green! - Homerr, on 05/14/2009, -0/+3Appalling
- Lasereth, on 05/14/2009, -4/+7Places like this make me wish they'd evac the whole area, carpet bomb the place, and start over.
- csbellina, on 05/14/2009, -0/+3I have seen this places like this since I was little, which I guess is why they didn't really affect me that much, but I imagine if you grew up in more affluent nations this would be a real shock. It is so unfortunate so many people in the world have to live in this conditions.
- zjbird, on 05/15/2009, -0/+3They're...woops

- carbonetc, on 05/14/2009, -0/+3I was on one of the rivers running through the Amazon rainforest, and there you could see the very beginnings of a situation like this. People living along the river would just put their garbage in piles near the shore. With nowhere else to put it, those piles would just get bigger and bigger.
And it's not entirely their fault. Some cultures are just used to everything being biodegradable. It comes out of the forest, it goes back into the forest. That's how it's always been. It's a natural expectation; it's *us* who live in the absurd culture that thinks creating substances we can't get rid of is normal and sane behavior.
But then the modern world shows up. Every big town you can reach by the river is fully stocked with Pepsi, Fritos, etc. All the plastic packaging that you see in the US has made its way down there and to every other corner of the globe. And what are those communities supposed to do with it? It's easy to argue that they should just adapt and create some infrastructure to manage it, or that they should abstain from buying these products, but both scenarios are incredibly unrealistic.
It makes you wonder if the companies creating the packaging are really the ones to blame here. They're more than happy to inundate these remote communities with plastic they can't get rid of and which they don't want and wouldn't accept if there was some other way to obtain the products. After all, it's not the plastic these people are buying; the plastic tags along whether they like it or not.
A responsible company would put some effort into reclaiming that packaging if it's going to put so much effort into getting the packaging that far into the wilderness in the first place. But such a company would be a rare jewel and it couldn't do much to save us from the companies that just don't care.
For as long as we mortgage our future and call it profit, we're utterly screwed. And beyond extinction I have no idea what it'll take to make humanity stop doing it. - baajes, on 05/15/2009, -0/+3sadly i have to agree.
before every session at my local skatepark i spend half an hour cleaning the ramps and trowing garbage in the trashcan. About 10 locals do the same during the week. If we wouldn't do that it would rapidly look like a scene on one of those pictures. It's pretty depressing... - rusty11, on 05/14/2009, -0/+1and u have to be a dumb hillbilly
- inactive, on 05/14/2009, -0/+2cant we just put on a rocket ship and hurl it into the sun?
