- chumpwagonrider, on 03/26/2009, -2/+46I love how everyone hates American tourists... until we aren't there anymore.
- ThinkBox, on 03/26/2009, -0/+23I went to Italy Christmas 2007. Snapped this shot on Christmas Eve in Rome. It's one of my favorite pictures I took over there - http://www.flickr.com/photos/35574197@N06/32914673 ... Its a wonderful place to visit.
- gavinhudson, on 03/26/2009, -1/+19In related news: American women sorely missed by Italian nightclub leg-humpers. (You know who you are.)
- unit001, on 03/26/2009, -0/+17They're called Italians.
- inactive, on 03/26/2009, -3/+19Yeah, I guess the days of pretending you're Canadian when you visit Italy are over.
- asus2000, on 03/26/2009, -0/+1380 euros for 30 minutes on a gondola... I passed on that and the Italians insulted me, loudly. They also can't drive worth a crap, constantly tailgating even on a single lane road, in traffic, and going faster than the limit. Strangely easy to pick them out though because they drive with two wheels in one lane and two in another. The other thing is, they stared constantly at my blonde girlfriend, as if they had never seen a woman before. It's over the top annoying. I'm Italian descent, and have always been proud, but now that I've been to Italy four times I'm not so proud of it anymore.
- inactive, on 03/26/2009, -2/+15Italy is a very poor country and can not afford new buildings or decent food. Their diet consists primarily of low cost noodles, sort of a ramen-type food but in some kind of ketchup like sauce.
- diggopolous, on 03/26/2009, -1/+13Nice shot though why did you take it of an old decrepit building? Are not there newer ones there?
- tbhurst, on 03/26/2009, -1/+10I heard this story on NPR today. I loved the Italian shopkeepers, they were all: "We lova the American customers, they are a the best." /bad phonetic interpretation.
- inactive, on 03/26/2009, -1/+9Europe misses American tourism most. They take our money then cry about how we make it.
- kagebutsu, on 03/26/2009, -1/+9I'd go visit if I had moneyz
- cre8tivate, on 03/26/2009, -1/+9Perhaps it's because of the horrible crime rate in Italy against its tourists! Word gets around quickly when people don't have a good experience. We will gladly spend our money elsewhere.
- AlaskaLoneWolf, on 03/26/2009, -0/+7Let's not forget about Alaska. We miss those tourist people too, but no one can afford to run the RV to get here anymore:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/alaskalonewolf/268937 ... - kpasc, on 03/26/2009, -1/+8I'm so glad I don't need to pretend!
- Akairenn, on 03/26/2009, -1/+7I'm stealing your image for use as desktop wallpaper on my box. :P
Awesome shot, man. - terminal157, on 03/26/2009, -0/+5It is
annoying
when you type like that - ftwb, on 03/26/2009, -1/+6Probably has something to do with the fact that there are ten Americans for every Canadian.
- geehossiphats, on 03/26/2009, -2/+7My mother visited Italy over a year ago and although she said she had a really good time, she said that once anyone found out that she was American she wasn't treated well. Mainly just shunned and were expected to pay more for things than non-Americans. Probably George W related. Sad.
- isunktheship, on 03/26/2009, -2/+7But I ehm Can-Ah-Di-an eh, put some more gravy on my poutine!
- 4NDr01D, on 03/26/2009, -3/+7my brother and his wife visted Napoli, they said it was a total ***** hole
apparently the land fills had come under environmental scrutiny
so the owner/mafia simply closed them
everyone in Napoli now piles their trash in city squares
which is burned once in awhile causing awful stink/smog
disgusting!
I still want to visit Florence though - ArtificialAnus, on 03/26/2009, -0/+3Wallet in front pocket. Always!
If you're paranoid, you can put a decoy wallet (with no money, or like only 10EUR and an inactive credit card) in your back pocket. - mantis108, on 03/26/2009, -0/+3Napoli = worst crime, but best pizza in the world. Even my Italian friends make the trip there just to get pizza and then return home, guarding their wallets and purses all the while.
Tuscany is another matter.. and in general the north vs. the south is a huge difference, much like the north vs. south of the US. You will not be disappointed visiting Florence, Lake Como, Lucca, Pisa, San Gimignano... the list goes on. Some of the best travel experiences of my life are in those places. Spend 5 days in Florence minimum if you can. Wonderful country and extremely, and consistently pro-American in their attitudes and outlook. And a culinary experience that you will bring home with you and integrate into your life... - inactive, on 03/26/2009, -1/+4anyways, its a good thing for people who like to see the sites without the hassle of mega overcrowding by other tourists
I dont know how it was before, but even the numbers I saw, pretty efin crowded, everywhere - Jacare, on 03/26/2009, -2/+5they still hate Americans, hell they probably hate you more and hold you responsible for the economic situation. what they miss is your money and how freely you use to spend it.
- PeteyUK, on 03/26/2009, -0/+3Sad panda pickpockets I'm sure. Not to generalize, but yeah.
- AlKo, on 03/26/2009, -1/+4Considering how important we are to their economy, Venetians still act like entitled douchebags to all tourists. I had once wanted badly to see Venice, but after a few people I knew went, they ALL warned me away even though they were all just as excited to go originally. Though they all enjoyed Rome...
- ArtificialAnus, on 03/26/2009, -0/+3The art, the food, the history, because it's somewhere new to them, and because it's nice to lie on the beach or swim in the Med.
I live in a very young country, and it's strange to go to a place with such an abundance of history that it makes my home look shallow in comparison. They also seem to have a very libertarian attitude about life. It's strange because despite the fact that the Italian government, police, and everyone else in any kind of position of power is corrupt, the population in general seems to have a greater measure of civil liberties than many other places I've been. - calvincrazy27, on 03/26/2009, -1/+4lol all they want is our money
- Zuwxiv, on 03/26/2009, -0/+3I've been studying in Siena (near Florence) for the past few months. Italy is the most amazing place I've ever seen, I love this country and I plan on visiting here (if not living here) again.
- unit001, on 03/26/2009, -0/+2I agree that on the whole my visit to Italy was enjoyable but you're right about transportation. Beware that trick in the Roman subway where 10 little kids all surround you right when you get on a train and when you're startled by the ones in front, one in back grabs your wallet, and they all dart off the train just as the doors are closing. And walking in the Forum we came across another American's wallet with all the money and cards taken but with her California drivers lisence in it. When we gave it to the consulate she wrote to us when we got home and said how everything was awesome until then and how dealing with the Roman police was a nightmare.
- cityscape, on 03/26/2009, -0/+2Prego!
- glasnostic, on 03/26/2009, -0/+2wow.. i'm actually in the process of canceling my summer trip to italy right now.
- ArtificialAnus, on 03/26/2009, -0/+2I've done similar - and I thought it was hilarious how every so often you see a "Controllata eletronnica" (radar enforcement) sign. Never saw any evidence of this *actually* taking place.
I did have a cop behind me once turn on his lights, but he just wanted me to move over so he could blow right on by. - BeShirtHappy, on 03/26/2009, -0/+2I have a good friend in Italy right now... and I'm so jealous. ;-) I hope to one day get the chance to go to Italy.
- GoKings, on 03/26/2009, -0/+2Sweet... I hope prices drop and the airline tickets to Italy drop. I hope to go there next year.
- onClipEvent, on 03/26/2009, -1/+3I work in the tourism industry in Canada, i can tell you it's a love hate relationship with the Americans. Someday you get the very nice, easygoing, educated people...then others you get people that assumed British Columbia was just another name for Canada (last week Tuesday, guy from Oregon), or if our prices were in American (get asked at least 5x a day), or get absolutely pissed off when they see we give change in Canadian, or just snobby rich people from LA and NY looking at us like dirt.
My partner is an American with a PhD, so i know there are certainly just as many smart Americans as there are from other countries. We (the people that actually deal with the tourists), just get annoyed dealing with ignorant people that are not worldly and think everything should bend their way. If you're from some third-world country with no education, fine, I can't blame you for now knowing things, but if you're from the US and don't even know we have a different currency or get mad when things work differently than in the US (probable indication that you've never been outside of the country or care to learn about it), that's just being dumb. And we all remember the bad ones than the good ones...that's just the way things are.
Vancouerites can spot a tourist right away, so there's no need to wear a sweatshirt that says which state or university you're from, that's no better than wearing a nascar t-shirt, fanny pack, and crocs (we all agree that's over, right?)
/end rant - ArtificialAnus, on 03/26/2009, -0/+1I believe it. I've also noticed that the further south you go, the less likely you are to meet tour groups, but it also becomes more likely that the tour groups you do meet are German. And that's not necessarily a good thing.
See, when on tour the breakdown is roughly:
Brits/Aussies/Irish = drunk
Canadians = boring (OK, not all of them...)
Americans = loud (not all of them, either...)
Nordic = hot (Finland excluded)
French/Italian = friendly, but nothings ever as good as it is back home
Asian (any) = keep to themselves
But Germans? I once shared a hostel dorm with a crew of Germans for two weeks.
Oh dear god no. I tried, I tell you I tried. WORST TWO WEEKS EVER. - ftwb, on 03/26/2009, -0/+1I wasn't defending that particular stat, just responding to the specific case that you brought up. The United States is unique in that it has a huge population, but is also very wealthy. Other countries with large populations (China, India, Indonesia) are still far behind the U.S. when it comes to disposable income. Other wealthy countries (most of Europe, Canada, Japan) have a fraction of the U.S.'s population. Therefore, there are many more American tourists out there than any other nationality.
- museamongmen, on 03/27/2009, -0/+1Italy's cool, I'm studying the lanuguage. Maybe I will visit one day and help them out.
- brid57, on 03/26/2009, -1/+2Europeans don't hate Americans they find them interesting, but some envy them too much...
- Annibal, on 04/06/2009, -0/+1Sadly lIttle kids stealing wallets are rumenian gipsy
- hackfu, on 03/27/2009, -0/+1I love Italy
- broncfan23, on 03/26/2009, -0/+1I'll be there in May, don't worry guys.
- chamsocga, on 08/05/2009, -0/+1italy so cool The Quirinal
http://playvn.blogspot.com/2009/07/quirinale.html - superkendall, on 03/26/2009, -0/+1I liked Venice. Nothing wrong with it that I saw, except the canals do of course have a bit of trash going on (mostly because you can almost never find a trash can to dump trash).
- nepidae, on 03/26/2009, -1/+2Thats not really news
- ThinkBox, on 03/26/2009, -0/+1Thanks, I'm honored! Maybe you'd like some of my other stuff too, same flickr account.
- Number23, on 03/27/2009, -0/+1best front pocket wallet, love mine
http://www.thejimi.com/ - ArtificialAnus, on 03/26/2009, -0/+1You should have gone anyway.
Been there, and it wasn't awesome, but it wasn't awful, either. Maybe that's because I caught it on a non-foul-smelling and non-flooded day. If you ever go there, you'll notice that every cafe is overpriced by a factor of about 5x. However, walk two streets back from any main street in Venice, and you'll find sanely-priced coffee.
The gondolas, however, are an unmitigated ripoff (unless you're with your girl... in that case just man up and shell out). -
