- shalb, on 04/01/2009, -0/+9The article is inaccurate. The list is of 25 least wasteful cities in the US. See for yourself. Here is the source for the article as linked in the article: http://leastwastefulcities.com/study_Overall.html
Of the twenty five on the list of least wasteful cities, Atlanta, Dallas, Indianapolis, Houston and St. Louis are the most wasteful. I thought it was odd that LA wasn't on the list if it was done by size of the city. It's the second largest city by population in the US and with SF and NYC on the list, LA should pop up somewhere, but it didn't. SF is the fourth largest city by population in California. It's 1/8 the size of NYC and doesn't break 1 million in population. Hell, San Jose, the third largest city in California doesn't even break 1 million. Only San Diego and LA do. - crash331, on 04/01/2009, -1/+9Atlanta REPRESENT!
- inactive, on 04/01/2009, -2/+9stop sniffin' your own farts.
- smartalien99, on 04/01/2009, -5/+12Great. More smug for SF
- AuntJemyma, on 04/01/2009, -1/+7Being from atlanta, I'm kinda proud.
- Altair27, on 04/01/2009, -1/+6Um... it lists 25...
BURIED AS INACCURATE - fabkebab, on 04/01/2009, -0/+4I live in Houston and try to recycle - The city certainly doesnt make it easy
Cans = 2 mile trip to drop stuff off
Paper/plastic = 8 mile trip
Electronics/glass = 20 mile trip
Plastic shopping bags = nobody will take them - curtisag, on 04/01/2009, -0/+4I wouldn't pat myself on the back too much SF, like the article says, we're all ***** compared to European cities. Houston doesn't even have a major public transport system, so I'm not sure it's even fair to compare. The possible weighted scores are between 193 and 1930. SF with 1025 may be the best, but even the lowest score is not that far off at 857. It would have been nice if they gave us the scores of a few European cities to compare.
- Dumbledorito, on 04/01/2009, -1/+5Interesting. However, I would presume that cities like Los Angeles and Las Vegas are more "wasteful" overall due to gasoline usage, climate control, road maintenance, and "watering the desert." Measuring per capita waste is good, but a larger picture would be nice to have as well.
- ifpk454, on 04/01/2009, -0/+3People will not be wasteful as soon as hyper-inflation hits.
- warz00, on 04/01/2009, -0/+3Agreed - this article isn't quite right.
- sting2kx, on 04/01/2009, -0/+3and now i feel stupid lol
- Shiftgood, on 04/01/2009, -3/+5i bet you only have pride, others are just smug huh?
- Railz, on 04/01/2009, -4/+6Save for Indianapolis, those are pretty much historically conservative states (?)
- branton87, on 04/01/2009, -0/+2I live in Indianapolis but I also stay in Michigan quite often. When I see people in Indiana throwing away cans and bottles I always wonder why they don't have the 10 cent deposit like Michigan. :/
- NecroSexy, on 04/01/2009, -1/+3What? Our governor, Sonny Perdue, prayed for rain!—What's more productive than that!
Seriously, he did. - Barackalypse, on 04/01/2009, -0/+2Washington DC should be number one.
- fabkebab, on 04/01/2009, -0/+2Houston has buses all over the place, plus a light rail in the city centre
- grovest4life, on 04/01/2009, -0/+2its the opposite going from least to most wasteful
- donnytomas, on 04/01/2009, -0/+2Yeah, Bellingham's green if you call Georgia Pacific, Intalco and BP green. A bunch of hippies who can't afford to consume who are smoking green bud in a climate that promotes green foliage doesn't necessarily make a place green.
I miss Bellingham, and I miss the 3B......RIP. - dystra, on 04/01/2009, -0/+2They only sampled these 25. this headline is all wrong.
"Atlanta, Dallas, Indianapolis, Houston and St. Louis are the most wasteful cities...in this list of 25 cities." - Siggymoney, on 04/01/2009, -0/+2San Francisco City, California Statistics and Demographics (US Census 2000)
San Francisco Population: 776733 - m85476585, on 04/01/2009, -0/+2I live in Atlanta, and we're not that wasteful. Here's a typical day for me:
When I wake up, the first thing I do is turn on the water, then I get dressed, then I brush my teeth. Since it's still dark, I turn on my 500W halogen lights outside, then I go get breakfast. For breakfast, I have either a bottle of water or an individual bottle of orange juice. I make a large helping of food, even though I am not feeling that hungry. As I am eating, I read the newspaper under some bright incandescent lights (I can't stand the color temperature of fluorescent lights). After breakfast, I usually have food left over, but I just throw it out because it is too much work to put it in the fridge, and I am out of Zip-lock bags. I also throw out the newspaper and juice or water bottle. I don't even own a recycling bin, and since there is no deposit on bottles as an incentive to recycle, I don't see the point. After breakfast, I head off to work. I leave the 500W halogen lights on for security, and because I can't be bothered to turn them off. It is kind of hot out, so I start my Hummer and let it idle for a while until the air conditioning cools it off. - ninjasandshiz, on 04/01/2009, -0/+1Never seemed like Pittsburgh was that wasteful *shrug*
- inactive, on 04/01/2009, -1/+2@ alien: Do you revel in being a hater?
- FoxOrian, on 04/01/2009, -0/+1As a Boston resident I wasn't expecting to be too high on the list for least wasteful, but at least it made the top 10.
- dystra, on 04/01/2009, -0/+1an overwhelming majority of harris county (houston) voted democrat last presidential election.
- ViperX116, on 04/01/2009, -0/+1• Turning off the water while brushing teeth - 1st
You mean most people don't do this? - warz00, on 04/01/2009, -0/+1St. Louis and Missouri are not "historically conservative"
- KMFDM781, on 04/01/2009, -1/+2Heh...I live in Indianapolis. What's funny is that for the longest time I've noticed that despite the fact that we live in a mostly rural state and Indianapolis is so small, the amount of garbage that litters the sides of the roads are just inexcusable. There's no reason for there to be this much trash. One more reason to hate this state....besides the hardcore rednecks, white trash, uppity people who have no reason to be uppity since they were probably born rednecks, white trash or more likely both, horrible drivers, snow in May, ***** basketball team, people who have absolutely NO since of culture, no GOOD places to eat, and on and on....
- BillyK, on 04/01/2009, -0/+1Hell yeah - that's my Dallas. City of Hate FTW!
- escottberg, on 04/01/2009, -0/+1Good call
- regeya, on 06/10/2009, -0/+1Aw, c'mon, this is the state where a blowjob is sodomy.
- TheUngod, on 04/01/2009, -0/+1FTA: "SF fell short in just one category: for limiting showers to less than 5 minutes, the City by the Bay came in 12th."
Did I read that correctly....SF limits showers to under 5 minutes??? - fabkebab, on 04/01/2009, -0/+1yes - westside (near HWY-6)
- renilative, on 04/01/2009, -0/+1I think they made a mistake on ATL....
Thats the most wasteful of them ALL... - doctressjulia, on 04/01/2009, -0/+1Have you thought about giving your plastic shopping bags to a local grocery? Usually co-ops or natural food grocers will take them... or, food pantries. They can always use plastic bags. Good luck (you are in Texas,, after all) :)...
- bipolarruledout, on 04/01/2009, -0/+1Least wastefull but still kind of like being the smartest kid on the short bus.
- randumbusername, on 04/01/2009, -1/+1cool with me. i have no desire to live in 1-14,16 and maybe 23.
- Gixxer18, on 04/01/2009, -1/+1The description says "If you live in San Francisco, you have yet another reason to pat yourself on the back: San Franciscans are the least-wasteful people in the country. " It says ANOTHER reason.. what was the first... if i lived in San Fran i'd try to stab myself in the eye every day with a rusty railroad spike.
- dawa259, on 04/01/2009, -1/+1These lists always only take large city's with more than million people into account. They never talk about mid sized or small citys. There are more mid sized citys than there are large. The city of Bellingham in Washington is pretty damned green, and I think I've saw it on a list once randomly.
- nepidae, on 04/01/2009, -1/+1(closes eyes and tilts head up) We're just a little better than everyone else.
- masterpurchaser, on 04/01/2009, -0/+0Do you live in the suburbs? You can recycle all of this in a 2 mile radius if you're in the inner loop.
- dantheIrishman, on 04/01/2009, -0/+0As a resident of the DFW metroplex and a former hustonian i cant say im surprised. ***** i recycle, but i wonder how much is local trash disposal practices and how much is individual fault.
- djm19, on 04/03/2009, -0/+0These are all just misconceptions of LA
People in LA, statistically don't drive that far (its less than the national average I believe).
LA has the second most used public transit in the nation, after new york.
Its climate control regulations are actually among the most progressive in the nation. What might confuse you is the smog, which would appear in a lot more cities, just like LA, except LA is very perfectly designed as a sort of bowl that keeps pollutant particles trapped in the air for awhile. Other cities usually just have their smog blown away before its TOO noticeable
Im not sure what you mean by road maintenance...driving in LA, its evident that not TOO many resources are spent on fixing roads ;)
And LA isnt a desert. Its not even a "desert in denial". It has droughts, but is explicitly no desert. LA is actually a very dense place (second densest in the nation). Most people dont own lawns, they are just renters in apartments and condos. - HotSaucePanCake, on 04/01/2009, -5/+4Nancy Pelosi is a waste of space
- sting2kx, on 04/01/2009, -2/+1wtf...Seattle makes the list of most wasteful but not the best city to live in? oh well, at least Portland is more wasteful than us.
- xmaschimp, on 03/31/2009, -9/+7As a proud resident of the Bay Area, I will gladly lump myself in with SF in the least-wasteful category (although I, too, promise to do even better next year...)
- scarlettletter, on 03/31/2009, -8/+5Great post, praise SF, booooo Atlanta!
