- bezz, on 07/08/2009, -0/+68Someone is building a massive laptop fort.
- Devine122, on 07/08/2009, -0/+65Someone is making money off this.
- Vosem, on 07/08/2009, -0/+62Good thing they beefed up security. Wouldn't want any questionable laptops getting onto the plane.
Seriously though... this is acceptable? 1200 laptops a WEEK?! - kahoona1, on 07/08/2009, -0/+62Maybe if they didn't make you take the thing out of the bag, take your shoes and belt off along with your wallet and watch, then shove you out the door as fast as possible there wouldn't be this big of a problem. When I go through airport security I literally have 4 bins of stuff because the laptop needs its own bin for some reason.
- Naieve, on 07/08/2009, -0/+52You mean the baggage handlers ebay page.
- jerryjamesstone, on 07/08/2009, -0/+33check the author's ebay page.
- inactive, on 07/08/2009, -0/+33So where do the unrecovered laptops end up? The article didn't mention that.
- Wisgary, on 07/08/2009, -5/+32So, how does a laptop owner lose a laptop? Really. I mean, when I carry my laptop out, I am ***** CAREFUL with it. It does not leave my sight - no - my touch at any time. The laptop bag is always in close proximity. If they lose it they deserve it.
- jeriqo, on 07/08/2009, -0/+25Lost?
You mean Stolen? - jman583, on 07/08/2009, -0/+22They are "lost."
- borez, on 07/08/2009, -0/+21Going into Heathrow is the worst for stuff going missing from a flight, the question that's always baffled me though is: How the ***** do the baggage handlers then smuggle the stuff they've just stolen out of the airport?
/I'd say sarcasm, but it's actually not ***** funny. - edebolt, on 07/08/2009, -8/+28WTF. Like I am going to forget my Macbook Pro. I would lose my girlfriend before the apple.
- borez, on 07/08/2009, -0/+19Someone is making A LOT of money off this.
- razmig, on 07/08/2009, -1/+17right, so lets say I take your laptop and put it in my bag really fast. now I get a free laptop and some cool stickers.
- Tarnum, on 07/08/2009, -0/+12Some TSA ones
- inactive, on 07/08/2009, -1/+13Its for your own security. We have it on advise the laptops are being treated well and are in a secure location.
(Black van drives past)... - nysus, on 07/08/2009, -0/+11FTA: "Incredibly, most laptops are left behind at security checkpoints, with only 33 percent ever being recovered (17 percent before the flight, 16 percent after)."
- Diggnabbit, on 07/08/2009, -0/+11Who checks their laptop in their non-carryon luggage?
- drivingalone, on 07/08/2009, -0/+10Hey complete stranger, do you mind watching my stuff for a minute?
- poihead, on 07/08/2009, -1/+11After reading the suggestion of putting the name inside the battery compartment I thought to myself that I should do the same, just in case.
That is when I remembered my computer has no battery compartment... Thanks Apple! - mtgn37, on 07/08/2009, -1/+9she's probably cheaper
- peestandingup, on 07/08/2009, -0/+71500 a week isnt "lost". Theres some ***** going down somewhere.
I mean really. If they're truly lost, then thats really REALLY bad management of your stuff. ***** monkeys could do a better job with not losing your stuff. - smacksaw, on 07/08/2009, -3/+9Yeah, you probably don't want to leave a laptop with your personal information with members of the federal gov't. I'm just sayin'...
I've started to travel with a really old Dell that only has a stripped-down version of Ubuntu on it. If it got lost, I wouldn't be out more than $100 in value and even though I don't have much of anything on it, the encrypted private folders are pretty cool just to make some enterprising person have to try hard for nothing. - skipvt, on 07/08/2009, -0/+6I'd bet you could find a lot of the "missing" on eBay.
- WiseGuy1020, on 07/08/2009, -0/+6Whole Disk Encryption FTW
- Mship, on 07/08/2009, -2/+8With over 1200 laptop a week going "missing" with an average price of about $700.00 that is about $840,000.00 a week just vanishing.
Strange. - Greengoo, on 07/08/2009, -0/+5That's why I keep pictures of lolcats in a folder called "Federal Attack Plans" then encrypt it.
- sapd, on 07/08/2009, -2/+7So do they then appear back as Hawking Radiation ?
- tomarocco, on 07/08/2009, -1/+6Note to self: Remove broadband cards from new inventory
- UMDWei, on 07/08/2009, -1/+6There are people that leave laptops in their luggage? Mine's by my side ALL the time unless it's going through the X-ray machine.
- jcronkhite, on 07/08/2009, -0/+5I had a laptop that was stolen out of my bag by security at LAX while boarding a United Airlines flight. They removed the laptop and then zipped up my bag so I wouldn't notice anything was missing until I was in the air.
A year later, a story broke about arrests that were made by authorities of thieving TSA employees for stealing laptops, cameras, camcorders, etc. and selling them on eBay and Craigslist. Keep a sharp eye on anything going through a terminal. The TSA will steal your stuff. If something is missing after the check, miss your flight and demand it be found immediately before it ends up for sale or found and stored in a warehouse somewhere. - drifter, on 07/08/2009, -1/+5Just vanishing? No, people forget the laptops or they get stolen. They don't just vanish.
- thecheatah, on 07/08/2009, -0/+4Place a GPS on ONE. Wait for it to be stolen. (Or even check the cameras when someone reports it missing.)
But you this would only help solve the problem. - blue98camaro, on 07/08/2009, -0/+4I have a clueless friend that when we do anything together i end up watching both of our stuff. Some people can be clueless to whats going on.
- skipvt, on 07/08/2009, -1/+5And don't forget the body cavity search. Wait a minute, don't tell me that don't happen to everyone.
- ronh, on 07/08/2009, -0/+4Aren't we rather benign.
- KarlH, on 07/08/2009, -1/+4Bear with me, it's for a good cause. I'm making a Beowulf cluster.
- alexllanio, on 07/08/2009, -1/+4Thats why u carry them with you.
- SteveMTyler, on 07/08/2009, -0/+3TSA takes them. They stole all my parents perscription meds one time, made it a real hassel when they landed in a foreign country without their medicine.
- somnus, on 07/08/2009, -0/+3Aaaahahaha awesome!
- morcheeba, on 07/08/2009, -0/+3That costing us $93 million dollars/year, at LAX alone. Or a billion dollars nationwide annually.
And those numbers are for the physical contents only; replacing the lost files & trade secrets, and missed opportunities could easily double that figure. - berryhill, on 07/08/2009, -0/+3Beefing up the security doesn't help much when probably 60% of the laptops gets taken home by the security and staff.
At nightclubs, every night there are lost phones and wallets on the ground. These usually get taken by bouncers/DJ's/bartenders when we clean up. - BroBillRogers, on 07/08/2009, -0/+3Do the words "inside job" or "organised crime" mean anything to you? Same situation at South African airports. And the airports company denies there is a problem. I took a case with clearly visible physical attack marks to the complaints desk: "Sorry, the person who deals with that is at lunch."
- avshanbh, on 07/08/2009, -0/+2Lost or stolen?
- inactive, on 07/08/2009, -0/+2I shouldn't lol but I will so, lol.
- diggapleeeze, on 07/08/2009, -0/+2Damn, that's like 7 laptops per hour, every hour of the day!
- chrisnyce2002, on 07/08/2009, -7/+9likely place to lose something - frazzled travellers - rushing to get that plane - set down the laptop bag and forget to pick it up!
- arvliet, on 07/08/2009, -0/+2No - really - you should go check it out. Been there several times - best security theatre I've ever seen. But, like all theatres, everything is over priced, the lines are long, and the wait staff sucks.
- zyklon, on 07/08/2009, -1/+3Or maybe some Boingo executive's Ebay page.
- KingGorilla, on 07/09/2009, -0/+2laptop heaven
