- milwaukeesbeast, on 10/26/2009, -1/+68I recently talked to a guy who spent 2 years in Iraq and 1 in afghanistan (about 2 years ago he went to afghanistan). He made it pretty clear to me that Iraq may never be completely stable but its safe enough to go day by day and not think youre going to die. He was in the fallujah offensive and had a couple close calls - such as his gun getting shot - but said he rarely felt like he was near death. It was planned, lots of people around, and the people who were losing guys in their squads were always 'somewhere else'
but when he told me about afghanistan he said he thought he was going to die all the time. Its not like iraq where you had a decently advanced country before hand, this really is a wilderness. Its tribal and there isnt as much defined battlefields. He said his biggest battle was one night while at a base in a valley they got surrounded on all sides by guys on the hills shooting RPGs and had machine guns raining down. More ambushes, felt more like you werent safe or in control.
these pictures do show that, afghanistan is a totally different war than iraq in many ways. it is an undeveloped country of poor people. its rough out there. - UhNathUhMuh, on 10/26/2009, -2/+56The funeral picture with the officer handing the kid the flag.. Man... You can just hear the silence in that picture.
- MacBookForMe, on 10/26/2009, -4/+35Amazing images from the land of forgotten tears...
- PowderedToasty, on 10/26/2009, -0/+26I feel really really lucky to not be in any of those pictures.
- mark076h, on 10/26/2009, -0/+25Only for you
- mavedatthews85, on 10/27/2009, -3/+24***** blanket statements.
- GThrift, on 10/26/2009, -2/+20I like how in 35 they are protesting Democracy. If it weren't for democracy they would never be allowed to protest without any kind of retribution. See post Iran elections this year.
- shroommi, on 10/26/2009, -0/+18I find pic #26 the boy running with the colorful balloons to be very striking (Even though they all are).
- mavedatthews85, on 10/27/2009, -0/+16We need to hear more stories from the soldiers themselves, so thank you for sharing that.
- Polycarp87, on 10/26/2009, -0/+16#20 almost made me cry. The worst part is that I know she isn't the only one.
- dave122, on 10/26/2009, -10/+25Sure he is, he doesn't chain people up because his imaginary friend told him to.
- 0biKwiet, on 10/26/2009, -2/+14Neither do most aggressive religious people.
. - master69better, on 10/26/2009, -0/+11Its Modern Warfare. In real life.
- irv2424, on 10/27/2009, -3/+14Ive seen so much of this on Digg lately and anyone who disagrees gets buried all the way to china. Im not religious but crap like "***** religion" is as retarded as a hardcore christian saying ***** atheists like every atheist is a terrible person. People can believe what they want if thats what makes their life meaningful, but for you to say ***** religion and people who believe in it cause a small percentage of religious people are nuts is is ignorant as *****.
- v00d00t00, on 10/26/2009, -0/+11That kid's spiderman if he makes that jump.
Love boston.com. - Ciryon, on 10/26/2009, -31/+39Picture 31
"It is believed that 40 days in chains and a restricted diet at the 300-year old shrine can cure the mentally ill and those possessed by djinns, or spirits."
***** religion and superstition and ***** those who believe in it. - thepeacemaker, on 10/26/2009, -0/+8#42 won't make it ...
- LonesomeFighter, on 10/26/2009, -0/+8a lot more great pics at the US Army's Flickr page for those who want more pics http://www.flickr.com/photos/soldiersmediacenter/
- Benjigga, on 10/26/2009, -2/+10Go die.
- heavyj1970, on 10/26/2009, -0/+7they look just like our kids, man, it makes you think
- LonesomeFighter, on 10/26/2009, -1/+8why do you desire to see dead Americans?
- nick041, on 10/26/2009, -0/+620 is the most important picture out of all of them. It's all silliness. When will all these people, older then myself, grow up & realize that know matter what you believe in, it's never worth nearly as much someones life, especially a childs.
It's so stupid. You have people wage war, over what? Over a my God is better then your God principle? Every good living person in the world is worth more then any ***** mythical deity religion has created. - papashawn, on 10/26/2009, -0/+5i hear she's available...
- HughJebongrip, on 10/26/2009, -0/+5Is it appropriate to show that much cleavage at a funeral?
- inactive, on 10/26/2009, -1/+5Digg this bastard down he knows not what peace really is. /s
- decoy26517, on 10/26/2009, -1/+5Good to see some of the aftermath of what we've done. Forcing people to accept democracy who don't want democracy.
- VeryBoredNow, on 10/27/2009, -3/+7I am not too religious but I will say that Mother Teresa was a better person that the last 4 generations of your family combined.
- heysuburbia, on 10/26/2009, -3/+6Stunning images.
This one looks like a screenshot from Modern Warfare 2:

- QuillRoots, on 10/27/2009, -0/+3yeah, hes a stud
- LonesomeFighter, on 10/26/2009, -1/+4i think the plan is mainly to allow respect for the sacrifice and the remaining family members. and sure, the gov probably prefers the least amount of negative news to come out of wars, but that makes perfect sense for their position.
- ryancawdor, on 10/26/2009, -2/+5I wish I could go to sleep for 500 years and wake up in a world devoid of superstition and all its accompanying *****: wars, oppression, etc.
Yeah, it's a ridiculous fantasy but I'm just so, so tired of watching mankind repeat the cycle of violence. - bstew22, on 10/26/2009, -0/+3a seriously emotional photograph.
- basickly, on 10/27/2009, -3/+6I don't have a problem with "***** religion", because seriously... ***** that.
There's nothing wrong with hating the idea of an organization (of sorts) that is based on lies and indoctrinating innocent people to believe them.
But "***** those who believe in it" or "***** Christians" is not right, because they are simply victims of religion (we all are in some ways). You're supposed to hate the oppressors not the oppressed.
I hate religion, but I don't hate the religious... - eivi, on 10/27/2009, -1/+3***** this war.
- xXSheepyXx, on 10/27/2009, -0/+2inappropriate comment is inappropriate
- bazzoola, on 10/26/2009, -0/+2Sad.
- hank22, on 10/27/2009, -0/+2This might be of interest also: http://www.michaelyon-online.com/michael-s-dispatc ...
- j1mmycc, on 10/26/2009, -0/+2Amazing pics. Check out that callus on the gravestone engraver. He's been busy, unfortunately.
- NorrisOBE, on 10/27/2009, -0/+2You know, you can say "***** religion" all you want but the truth is:
There will always be religion.
When an old religion is gone, a new religion arrives.
Islam came after the death of another Abrahamic religion.
Mormonism came after a decline in Anglican Christianity.
Infact, while Europe is becoming more secular, South Korea & Japan are more religious. It's really *HARD* to have religion wiped out of society. Now, dugg me down but thanks to a strong emphasis on Confucianism in Asian society, religion will keep on thriving, atleast in Asia. - ealmiladi, on 10/26/2009, -0/+2Amazing, yet so sad.
- etsboy1, on 10/27/2009, -0/+2I wish every other site would do it like that, so easy and looks good as well.
- Aurabolt, on 10/26/2009, -0/+2I thought the exact same thing
- dutchguilder2, on 10/26/2009, -0/+2Karzai will win the runoff election with 283% of the vote.
- mavedatthews85, on 10/27/2009, -0/+2I'm not sure if I can fully agree about dictatorship; but I do agree with the point about education, though. A (properly) educated child doesn't grow up a terrorist.
- nuketrap, on 10/26/2009, -0/+2I feel so bad for that girl whose families tent was fired at, just looking at those burns makes me so grateful for what I have, I really hope they have what we have in future.
- Atario, on 11/08/2009, -0/+2I've admired boston.com for some time for keeping to this simple setup and showing such great photojournalism, but I can't believe I only just noticed this:
"(Use j/k keys to navigate)"
Sweet! - burketo, on 10/26/2009, -0/+2#36 is a beautiful shot. The stars in the background are breathtaking.
- basickly, on 10/27/2009, -0/+1I know this isn't the time for levity, but that canadian gunner picture looks like it's from Killzone 2, which is pretty badass.
Also, that guy with the shrapnel wound on his face looks badass because it's like he was chosen by the Chaos gods. -
