- lex0nyc, on 01/23/2008, -3/+15"God is my roommate. God never does the ***** dishes."
- trotskyist, on 01/23/2008, -3/+13Because Ron Paul is totally anti-religion.
Oh, wait.. - Servebot, on 01/23/2008, -1/+11Don't feed him
- geekchic, on 01/23/2008, -1/+10Converting old unused Churches into housing (or offices) is a fairly well established trend in the UK.
I almost took a flat share in one - where the entrance door led up a flight of stairs to a huge stained glass window at the top. Quite stunning. Alas, the flatmate was less impressed. - Elliuotatar, on 01/23/2008, -1/+7Damn that's ugly. Who the hell pays these idiots to do this minimalist crap? All white with basic barebones geometric shapes? You have an old chuch which would be perfect for some kind of victorian or gothic or medieval theme design, and they do the worst possible thing with it.
- kiwimonk, on 01/23/2008, -1/+7Nah, only prosties.. cause you can ask for forgiveness after every session.
- mmmmmbiscuits, on 01/23/2008, -0/+6Yeah, cuz you're clearly the kind of hardcore dude who's always fighting the power, and speaking truth to power, and doing other sorts of rebellious and painfully hip things to power. Not to mention honing your mad nunchuk skills, delivering pizza, and wearing the occasional mask. You go girl!
- honkaform, on 01/23/2008, -2/+8Haha. I'd definately rock out on the organ and look all sinister.
- lex0nyc, on 01/23/2008, -1/+6And by "girls" you mean... ?
- Lokomis, on 01/23/2008, -3/+8[insert humanistic, non-xenophobic comment here]
- lipa, on 01/23/2008, -5/+10this happens all the time in melbourne, australia.
how did this get to the homepage of digg?! - humanerror, on 04/03/2008, -2/+6Of course it does, I'm only 29
- inactive, on 01/23/2008, -1/+5Does the organ still work?
- inactive, on 01/23/2008, -4/+8I would have gay sex in one of these rooms.
- spyd3rweb, on 01/23/2008, -4/+7Lets hope the new tenant isn't into things like premarital sex.
- lex0nyc, on 01/23/2008, -2/+5Or get him wet...
- mentol, on 01/23/2008, -1/+4Now that's my idea of a church apartment
- m3mn0n, on 01/23/2008, -2/+4Goes to show how much Ron Paul fanatics know the guy...
INCREASE GOV'T SPENDING TO INVADE CANADA!!
RON PAUL FTW!! - briantek, on 01/23/2008, -5/+7Much better use for a chapel IMO.
- yacks, on 01/23/2008, -1/+3and can I play In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida on it?
- SRSco, on 01/23/2008, -0/+2Because it looks cool.
Why don't you submit some pictures of the ones in Melbourne...I'll digg those too. - philipv, on 01/23/2008, -1/+3If they respect the character of the Church, they would have retained the color.
- inactive, on 01/23/2008, -1/+3Churches may have a use after all...
- lostarchitect, on 01/23/2008, -0/+2...past midnight.
- SRSco, on 01/23/2008, -0/+2Nice...ripping off comments from the original article. How original and clever of you.
- spooq, on 01/23/2008, -1/+2The big problem is always how to treat the stained glass windows. If you have an upper floor, then you cut the windows in half, and if you don't, then you really lose a lot of square feet of living area. The architect here seems to have made a reasonable compromise by having a small upper floor with no interior walls. Is the result liveable? Unfortunately still no, in my opinion.
- monger84, on 01/24/2008, -0/+1I worked for a software company in King City Ontario whose office used to be a Masonic Lodge.....Quite an interesting concept....
- madblunted, on 01/23/2008, -0/+1Like Denver's "The Church"
- themastersb, on 01/23/2008, -0/+1Now it looks like a "Neo Church"
- bpmdub, on 01/23/2008, -0/+1does the look of this remind anyone else of A Clockwork Orange?
- theradical, on 01/23/2008, -2/+3Another good example of the concept: the best music venue in Amsterdam is a converted church. Only, they managed to retain the character of the place. When no one is there is basically just looks like a church with a bar at the back. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paradiso_%28Amsterdam ...
- humanerror, on 04/03/2008, -4/+5God must not have been paying His rent
- lostarchitect, on 01/23/2008, -0/+1...or, a really coo and tasteful mix of old and new. whichever.
- Commonwealth, on 01/23/2008, -0/+1I always assume it's the same person that wrote both comments.
- chrisaug18, on 01/23/2008, -0/+1Yeah a church where I live was converted into a pool hall and bar...both much better uses for a church as far as i'm concerned
- gordeh, on 01/23/2008, -1/+2In my old building they had double height first floors to get round it. Yes you lose some space, but its a great feeling of space when upstairs and downstairs.
- lostarchitect, on 01/23/2008, -0/+1To save the windows, you need to make the 2nd floor into a mezzanine, and not allow the floor itself to touch the wall. the structure doesn't need the support, and it adds a nice effect unifying the upper and lower floors. you can also make this floor a partial mezzanine, as this architect did, to really show the volume of the space. (yes, i'm an architect).
- gordeh, on 01/23/2008, -1/+2I only recently sold my flat in a church in the uk. Plenty have been converted in Bristol. Usually to offices or flats.
- jessestorm, on 01/23/2008, -0/+1It's better than turning it into a shed (which happened where I live).
- easy2panic, on 01/23/2008, -0/+1Well, this is better than those churches that are turned into nightclubs.
- MuzakaEklekta, on 01/23/2008, -1/+2I live in a converted chapel. It has been split into several apartments. I absolutely love it. I also have a similar finish to the one in this article. The charm is still there. I still have the stained glass windows and the high wooden ceilings. I think it's great that chapels are being made more useful in this century.
- DeFex, on 01/23/2008, -0/+1I used to work at a company who made video slot machines in a converted church.
- Myztry, on 01/23/2008, -1/+2Empty 'barns for humans' as extremely common in Australia. But like their counterparts aren't really well suited as residences. They do tend to be made from Blue Stone which is partly appealing but more often then not they end up us small business hairdressers and such.
