Rule #2: There are no more rules. - staxofmax, on 01/18/2008, -8/+43I get the impression that 100% of the people that would travel this way smell absolutely horrible.
- smurf22, on 01/18/2008, -6/+318 easy tools to get you raped
- Commonwealth, on 01/18/2008, -2/+18Couch Surfing sounds a lot like being in a band.
- Camgore, on 01/18/2008, -4/+20I'd love to just drop everything and ride the rails with the hobos, that would be ***** killer!
- mediablab, on 01/18/2008, -1/+15Gas is the least of your worries if you're trying to travel between coutries. I'd like to see you drive your RV from Montana to Mongolia. ;)
- merreborn, on 01/18/2008, -2/+14Communism works on a small scale.
- KSUdesigner, on 01/18/2008, -1/+13You're not cool because you made your username TylerDurdan and post that quote in every comment you make.
- Miche1987, on 01/18/2008, -0/+11Tool 11: You.
OOOOH BURN! - CrimsonBlur, on 01/18/2008, -1/+11Traveling in an RV limits where you can go severely. Fist, you have to stick to places you can drive to, that means no ferries too. Also, you had better not try to go over any icy mountain passes, so that limits you to certain seasons and some places you just can't go to.
RV's are stupid anyway, with the price of gas now, it would be much cheaper for you to take a car and stay at a hotel or motel. RV's are a huge ripoff. - wattersm, on 01/18/2008, -0/+10You'll get arrested, the railroads don't put up with stowaways any more.
- slashbot, on 01/18/2008, -2/+11Sounds a lot like being a bum
- buckrogers1965, on 01/18/2008, -1/+10Especially clown rape.
- FoxFaction, on 01/18/2008, -4/+13Tool 9: A cup for people to donate their change.
- hansblix, on 01/18/2008, -0/+8OR, you could use some of these ideas as opportunities to travel to other countries, meet people, help them out, and have a free place to stay.
but then again, who would want to do that. right? - ender52, on 01/18/2008, -1/+9You know what happens to these so-called "motivated individuals?" They get jobs and talk about how they are saving their money so they can travel the world their whole life then they turn 60 and complain about how they wish they'd done more than just work when they were young.
- LaserCo, on 01/18/2008, -2/+10cool link, saving it in bookmarks for if things get THAT bad, though a free "vacation" sounds interesting!
- Hobbes24, on 01/18/2008, -1/+8might have to take care of old people though. and as a great man once said, old people are gross.
- bobcrotch, on 01/18/2008, -3/+10Rape is hilarious.
- brstilson, on 01/18/2008, -0/+7Downside: You'll have to put out.
- Commonwealth, on 01/18/2008, -0/+7Up until this point I was undecided, but gosh darn it I think I finally know who I'm going to vote for because of you.
- pinguwin, on 01/18/2008, -2/+9As one who does travel long term, I have some exposure to these things. Some of them are basically work. Myself, I don't work while I travel as I can make 10X more at home than I can wwoofing and I'd rather make my money at home and laze around while I travel (or hike vigorously).
The last group truly turns you into a freeloader unless you give back. If you always stay with someone else, you really should open your home up also and trust me, it's not always easy to open it up to someone who has heard about you on the internet (it's gone both ways on that one). Sometimes it's wonderful, sometimes it's not. There is another option called the warm shower network for cyclists that is a similar idea as those listed above. A few years ago, I did a three year trip around the world. Later this year I will spend 15-20 months in South America.
As far as smelling, not in the slightest. Hygiene is hygiene and you can be clean or dirty at home or on the road. - laterthandawn, on 01/18/2008, -2/+9I must have missed the tool that pays for my plane tickets.
That said, that's a pretty sweet set of resources. - inactive, on 01/18/2008, -1/+7It sounds tiring.
- oregongirl82, on 01/18/2008, -1/+7Cool. Definitely remembering this one for future travels.
- Monkeywr3nch, on 01/18/2008, -1/+7I recently worked for 2 months as a volunteer in France for an NGO similar to WWOF. Sometimes the work is boring but it pays off once you meet interesting people. And since I had my food and accommodation needs covered, I could spend the money I saved to travel around the country. Very nice experience overall.
- hansblix, on 01/18/2008, -0/+6And then there's other people who can do all those things without feeling the need to brag about it on the internets, doood.
- rasp, on 01/18/2008, -0/+6I've been a couch surfing host for a couple of years now and I love it. I have great friends from all over the world who have asked me to come stay with them when I'm in their country. That said, because I live in a popular destination city (San Francisco) I can't possibly host all the people that I get requests from and I get to pick and choose those whom I allow into my house. Honestly, there have been very few people that seem like pure freeloaders. Most requests I get are from people who have jobs (or are in school) and their visit to San Francisco is purely one of pleasure (or occasionally passing through on a west coast bike ride or something). I've friended many other CS hosts here in SF (the site sometimes seems like it's used more for locals to socialize than just for travelers) and very rarely have I heard of a negative experience. The system has a good reputation system built in to keep people who want to abuse it (as a host or traveler) out as bad deeds travel fast and lead to negative feedback.
If you want to use the system and get hosted by others, it'll help a lot to follow a couple of tips:
1. plan your trip well in advance. Many people host often and can't host people the day of. Also, asking for a couch the same day makes it look like you're poorly organized.
2. go through couch surfing verification system and have them validate your identity to the degree they can.
3. Make friends in the system, post pictures of yourself places and fill out the profile. People with an empty profile and no picture look like they don't want to contribute to the system and are not serious about the spirit of sharing.
but really, give it a try, it's lots of fun and a way better way to see a strange city than by yourself in a hotel room with nothing but a outdated guidebook that has no idea what you really might like to see. - centran, on 01/18/2008, -1/+6You would be surprised at how many people(and normal people too!) did that back in the day. It's not that common anymore.
- derek20cali, on 01/18/2008, -0/+51. Live with parents forever
2. Borrow their car
3. ??? - tarheel314, on 01/18/2008, -0/+58 way to attract an axe murderer (or make your house smell like patchouli)
- samssf, on 01/18/2008, -0/+5!!! thank you so much
I've got a golden tickeett.... YES, because I've got a golden ticket ^_^ - jj101, on 01/18/2008, -2/+7What bastion of righteousness do you stand on that you get to judge other peoples accomplishments. The thing about the western world rat race is that, even if you're winning, you're still a rat. If people choose not to take part and to live a different style of life, then who are you to say they have accomplished nothing. Maybe they consider the things you have or might accomplish as superficial ***** in the same way that you consider their accomplishments to be sentimental drivel.

- CobaltBlue, on 01/18/2008, -1/+5I got news for you, having dental insurance sucks as well.
- inactive, on 01/18/2008, -2/+6Couch Surfing is actually really great. A friend and I were able to cut our travel costs to Europe by one third and we only stayed with people half time.
Plus I got to meet some really awesome people who gave me amazing insider information about Madrid and Amsterdam.
No amount of money can buy 24 guides who are super chill. - timbo458, on 01/18/2008, -0/+4What the ***** are you?
- kmattso, on 01/18/2008, -1/+5Sounded fun until I saw the picture.
- inactive, on 01/18/2008, -1/+5I've been completely around the world twice and you don't have to be a bum to do it. Save your money for a year or so and stay in a clean hotel. You can have a great time, be comfortable and come back with change.
- buckrogers1965, on 01/18/2008, -0/+4Voluntary collectivism on a small scale is always good, it's what democracy is all about.
- largobargo, on 01/18/2008, -0/+4How about bed surfing?
- samssf, on 01/18/2008, -1/+5I'd love very much to travel for a year or two, I just don't know how to plan it our or how to get started. I also don't know anyone who'd travel with me, and don't know people in other countries =(. It would be great to get out of the U.S. though.
- wushi, on 01/18/2008, -4/+7i can has ahdvetcheur?
- asdfrewq, on 01/18/2008, -2/+5As opposed to getting a career, a house, a wife and a couple of kids? I fail to see how that alternative is any sort of accomplishment.
- Kratos76, on 01/18/2008, -0/+38 tools to be a professional freeloader. ...actual words FTA too!!
- jsp123, on 01/18/2008, -2/+5I always wanted to travel the US going from thrift shop to thrift shop. Then sell the vintage clothing I find on eBay to fund my (hopefully) long vacation. Digg me down if you think it is a horrible idea...
- jj101, on 01/18/2008, -5/+8Yeah I agree. Everyone in the rest of the world is a rapist or murderer. Lets all stay at home where its nice and safe. The rest of the world is really scary.
- MikeSD34, on 01/18/2008, -0/+3It's just food and water. An RV is like any car or truck, it has a generator in it which is used to recharge the batteries so you can listen to your stereo when you want. RVs have them too, and in all likely-hood are beefed up to support things like a stove and a microwave, as well as televisions in some of the better models. Yea, you use more gas, but these things aren't known for being fuel efficient anyway.
For water, well you could collect rain water. There are people who aren't in RVs that do that, and it seems to work fairly well.
I'm not saying its perfect, just saying it's entirely possible. - asdfuiop, on 01/18/2008, -4/+7But, man, you'd be like, in touch with the gaia-spirit, and, like, stuff, man...
Man.... -
