- gvoakes, on 05/28/2009, -0/+8Post is back up now I guess.
- twojciac, on 05/28/2009, -1/+7Holy *****... Sydney / Perth, as if the two cities are somewhat close. It's not like Minneapolis / St. Paul or Dallas / Fort Worth. They're 4,000 km apart.
They should have put New York / Washington DC together if they put Sydney / Perth together. - nepidae, on 05/28/2009, -0/+5This is hardly my worst nightmare. It sucks to have your credit card number stolen (it happened to me once) but its hardly the end of the world.
- Cornloaf, on 05/28/2009, -0/+3"A recent scam which targeted drive-up ATM machines made off with $1.8 million – most of which was quickly wired off to Eastern Europe."
They withdrew cash from an ATM so how do they know it was quickly wired off to Eastern Europe? It could have been spent at strip clubs, spent on hookers, purchase drugs, etc... - hdar3415, on 05/28/2009, -0/+3http://74.125.95.132/search?q=cache:http%3A%2F%2Fw ...

AKA
Any large city in the world - kimbja98, on 05/28/2009, -0/+1A one-time pad system would help solve this problem. Companies often use something like this using a keyfob number generator ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SecurID ). More "instant" online banking would also enable users to see their transactions in real time and possibly pre-authorise the transactions for a set amount also reducing fraud. Of course, measures such like these cost money and perhaps it's not worth companies doing it.
- inactive, on 05/28/2009, -0/+1A similar thing happened to my family and I once. After getting some carryout from an Italian restaurant and the total for our bill was an extra 10 or so dollars than it should have been.
- diulei, on 05/28/2009, -0/+1Ah, the ignorant foreigner syndrome. Sometimes when I'm abroad and tell people I'm from Southern California, they think I go to San Francisco for lunch.
- algorythm, on 05/28/2009, -0/+1According to what? Where are the references for this information?
- whiledo, on 05/28/2009, -0/+1True. But on the other hand, the population of the entire continent of Australia is 21 million. Considering it ranks 9th in the world in terms of countries with english speakers (and this WAS published in English), nestled right below France and right above Pakistan, I think it's pretty safe to assume that this article is more likely to be read by people who are visiting Australia and who therefore don't really give a flying ***** about how far they are apart.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_ ...
Lumping together two US cities, on the other hand, would be dumb (see list) considering their place on the list.
This list is already retarded without getting your panties in a bunch about this issue. Like another poster said, it should just be titled "7 [or 8] Popular Cities." - Barackalypse, on 05/29/2009, -0/+1Far more people are going to fall victim to their credit card company security departments if they dare to try and use their cards in a foreign country. The first charge may go through, maybe not, then there will be a security hold placed on the card and you'll get the wonderful experience of figuring out how to place an international call from some foreign country to get them to re-activate it.
- inactive, on 08/07/2009, -0/+1this is crazy
http://www.manifestmoneytalks.com/business-credit- ... - TwizzleNicole, on 08/04/2009, -0/+1Oh my god I saw an article on this last week, so many people are becoming victims of this type of scam. I think the prog was called 'the real hussle' and they show you all the tricks which fraudsters use to scam you so you can be more aware of whats going on. I think the trick is to never ever let you card go out your sight. If the waiter says he will take your card to be swiped at the till then go with him and watch him do it. Don't let him just wonder off with your card.
- DiscoRage, on 05/28/2009, -0/+1Meanwhile, there's a credit/debit card fraud crisis in Toronto right now. Again, the rest of the world ignores Canada.
- grovest4life, on 05/28/2009, -1/+1Niko is that you?
- capyoda, on 05/28/2009, -0/+0probably the usual fat finger snafu.
- rmah, on 05/28/2009, -0/+0The article says about NYC: "A recent scam which targeted drive-up ATM machines made off with $1.8 million – most of which was quickly wired off to Eastern Europe."
While that story may be true, I've NEVER seen a "drive-up ATM" in all the years I've lived and worked in NYC (Manhattan). Manhattan is where all the tourists go. I'd actually be surprised if any existed in Manhattan.
The only other "evidence" it provided to support it's claim that NYC is #1 in CC skim scams is the "fast pace and frenetic lifestyle". I don't know anyone who's fallen victim to such a thing. I do know many people who have been victims of identity theft just after vacationing in other places.
Overall, the article sucked. - gvoakes, on 05/28/2009, -4/+3The blog author removed the post after submission... *thumbsdown*
- mtvgirl84, on 05/28/2009, -2/+0this is crazy
