7 (More) Abandoned Wonders of the Former Soviet Union [PICS]

weburbanist.com — There are abandonments all over the world, but the former Soviet Union has some of the most interesting, unique and strange abandoned infrastructure. The complex political, military and social history of the country can be understood in part through these deserted island fortresses, radioactive mines, incredible estates and abandoned cities.

  • Argentian, on 04/14/2008, -0/+9These are incredible pictures. The old fort outside St. Petersburg (honoring one of the many Alexanders', no doubt), the old Russian estate reminding me of Dr. Zhivago, the military hardware complete with Backfire bombers, boats, abandoned villages...
    Sad, but in a way, enthralling to see parts of the Russia I have been aware of but couldn't see, for so many years. I've got to go make a trip itinerary...
