- EMFK, on 04/16/2009, -0/+20I would definitely like to know more about the Vijayanagara Empire. Thank you for introducing it to those of us that aren't familiar with it.
- DrJG, on 04/17/2009, -0/+6Most ancient cities of India cannot be excavated, since they are still being inhabited, continously since antiquity; and in a culture where people are not buried, there is not much to be found by excavation except rarely. Vijayaanagara and similar places are remains of civilisations ruined deliberately and savagely by invading marauders.
- Mardala, on 04/17/2009, -0/+5I spent a few months there spread over several trips. Awesome place. There is definitely a lot to see there and the history runs deep, so spend some time soaking it in. The last time I was there they were working on a bridge across the river to the other part of Hampi (as the area is known as now a days) and a big stage at the end of the main bazaar. So both those are well completed by now.
They have a pretty cool car festival where they take the god icons from the temple out on these gigantic carts. Can't remember when that happens. I hear they have performances in the bazaar now that the stage is complete.
One thing .. the last time I was there, petty theft was troublesome. A lot of the locals live on little and there is a large foreign population visiting all year round.
Amazing sunsets and views up on the hills of rocks. You can also wander around the rock landscape and find bits of the past in odd rock structures and other things carved in the rocks.
If you can handle India, definitely should be on your list of places to visit. - gordigor, on 04/17/2009, -0/+5Those are some long names. I ran out of breath before I finished the twelve syllable.
- Jordan117, on 04/17/2009, -0/+5Tell me about it. In 500 years Vijayanagar went from the second-largest city on Earth to a bunch of ruins, population: 0.

Makes you wonder what Tokyo or New York might be like in 2500... - tushyd, on 04/17/2009, -2/+6Great list, although I would put Angkor Wat in there. No, it's not in India now but back in the day that area was pretty much Indian
- mickaloha, on 04/17/2009, -0/+4I am more interested in the sunken cities that might push civilization back to 10,000 BC or more. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/1768109.stm
- BossKey, on 04/17/2009, -1/+5What does Digg have to do with dirt?
What does suxmonkey have to do with... - Smalldude76, on 04/17/2009, -0/+4Vijayanagara was almost 1337, but it came too early.
- immatellyouwhat, on 04/17/2009, -0/+3Oh look this story was submitted by Vin Diesel...
/facepalm - IsraGeek, on 04/17/2009, -0/+3It's great that these temples are being preserved in one way or another so that these cities aren't forgotten.
- aceinhibitor, on 04/17/2009, -0/+2Dugg for Hampi. Awesome place.
- aceinhibitor, on 04/17/2009, -0/+2No it wasn't. They was some religious influence from India but that was it.
- tushyd, on 04/17/2009, -0/+2Chola Empire territory in the early 12th century, when Angkor Wat was built. I would say it was loosely Indian, but yeah it wasn't direct territory.

The once capital of the Mughal Empire that also built the Taj Mahal.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fatehpur_Sikri - SoftStud, on 04/17/2009, -0/+2Good to wander in those ruins...
- gordigor, on 04/17/2009, -0/+1WTF?
- suxmonkey, on 04/17/2009, -1/+2What the heck does this have to do with the 'environment' or 'graffiti'? Just wondering.
- Sabretou, on 04/17/2009, -1/+2Yeah well, technically speaking, nothing was "Indian" back then.
- DirtPile, on 04/17/2009, -2/+3Thank you for all these informative links!
