- sajnikanth, on 01/22/2008, -0/+30Amazing concepts. BTW where are the flying cars we were promised?
- cmccool, on 01/22/2008, -1/+24the proposed ultima tower in san francisco is just freaking gigantic!
- Ravenhaft, on 01/22/2008, -0/+22You can't build megastructures like this in LA. It's on a fault line. They'd just fall down, likely before they finished building them.
- omenmedia, on 01/22/2008, -0/+17Under the sea! Under the sea! There'll be no accusations, just friendly crustaceans - under the seaaaaa!
- hoteladdict, on 01/22/2008, -0/+17Some of those pics look awesome. Good find!
- Jacobson51, on 01/22/2008, -1/+17Most of those Arcos remind me of Sim City 2000... anyone else?
- tehbored, on 01/22/2008, -1/+17Most of these are just pipe dreams, but the Moscow one is being built and the Bionic tower looks pretty plausible as well.
- WileyK, on 01/22/2008, -1/+15We tried this already, it's called New Orleans.
- JLecker, on 01/22/2008, -1/+14Yeah, but what about the crime rate?
- wphj, on 01/22/2008, -0/+12You want to live underground?
- clogon, on 01/22/2008, -3/+14Are they trying to compensate for something :)
- sanman, on 01/22/2008, -0/+11Which Gundam colony were these all built on?
- dood, on 01/22/2008, -0/+10We should let fear dictate our actions, or inactions. Whatever we do, we should make sure people still rely on Middle East-sourced oil to move around within their city.
- digidelia, on 01/22/2008, -0/+10that only applies to arcologies in sim city ;)
- slothlovechunk, on 01/22/2008, -1/+11There's no way the burj dubai is going to be 2000 meters. Maybe you are thinking of 2000 feet?
1meter != 1foot - solidus636, on 01/22/2008, -0/+9It would be so cool to live in Cloud City...
- bamafun, on 01/22/2008, -0/+9they are at the same place where the alternative fuels are being stored lol .....
- Seomann, on 01/22/2008, -4/+12Thank the Japanese for leading the charge.
- shadowblade989, on 01/22/2008, -1/+9Why do we spend all this time and money figuring out how to build really tall buildings when we could make a really big hole in the ground? I'm not saying these buildings aren't awesome, but there are so many problems that have to be overcome when building something vertically on that scale - where if you were to build a giant hole, all you would have to do is make sure enough light gets to the bottom and build it in an area with the least chance of flooding.
- inactive, on 01/22/2008, -3/+11actually LA should just have a bubble put over it like springfield, and let them all choke on their SUV fumes.

And No Fat Chicks. - cl2yp71c, on 01/22/2008, -0/+6I'm sure lots of people will be asking, "How bout the sewer system?"...
"Leave it to the level below." - CheapDigWannbe, on 01/22/2008, -1/+7Or you could've just taken pictures of Dubai and erased "future" from the article.
- inactive, on 01/22/2008, -0/+6Will there be some guy named Lando running the city?!?!?
- dood, on 01/22/2008, -0/+6Or some good ol' fashioned suicide booths.
- iamabe, on 01/22/2008, -0/+5how the ***** does an elevator going 3 miles per hour scale a 2 mile high building in 10 minutes? that makes no ***** sense. ***** blogs.
- Larke2000, on 01/22/2008, -0/+5Sky City used to be a great discount store around here. glad to see it coming back.
- tsotha, on 01/22/2008, -0/+5I don't see why they'd need reservoirs. Why not just a pump every ten floors or so?
- Ravenhaft, on 01/22/2008, -0/+5Alright so some basic math using the costs, the X-Seed 4000 would cost about 1 million dollars per resident. Hardly worth it. However, the bionic tower at a cost of 15 billion and 100,000 inhabitants would work out to a nice 150,000$ per resident. At that point a living space inside the tower would be the cost of a small home. Obviously this would be an average, with condos nearer the top demanding a huge premium from the ones at the bottom.
- blacktriangle, on 01/22/2008, -0/+5And Lando Calrissian can be the mayor!
- 0crabby0, on 01/22/2008, -0/+5So I can move out of my Zeppelin now?
- mcrumiller, on 01/22/2008, -0/+4I’m a little confused by the Ultima Tower. It claims that it’s planned to be 2 miles high, yet traveling at 3mph it would take just under 10 minutes to reach the top? What kind of math idiots figured that out? 1h/3miles * 2 miles = 2/3hour = 40 minutes.
- blast_flame, on 01/22/2008, -0/+4We can't just stop building things in the fear that someday they could possibly be used by terrorists. If the terrorists are indeed trying to scare us to acting differently then people like you are proof that they are succeeding.
- MJG2007, on 01/22/2008, -0/+4Considering that most places you would consider building a large underground habitat would be near a large body of water and/or a source of fresh water building a large hole would involve constantly fighting the ground water, I'm thinking up would be a bit of a challenge to build.
Not to mention it's easier to displace air than earth (which might also involve layers of rock). - brightmarc, on 01/22/2008, -0/+4most people are on shared hosting accounts man. who has 400$ per month for dedicated servers for 1 digged article??
- Jimbob200, on 01/22/2008, -0/+3Needs a mirror!
- LastSight, on 01/22/2008, -0/+3ohho science....wat more kind of funnies shall you bring me into the future?
- CrimsonBlur, on 01/22/2008, -1/+4Wait, what? Our cities have been growing vertically for over a century now. Have you ever heard of a skyscraper? Yeah...
- bosssmiley, on 01/22/2008, -0/+3Those in the penthouses will *still* be crapping on those below? "Plus ca change..."
- mexicanman07, on 01/22/2008, -0/+3who needs a suicide booth when your 2 miles up
- cobrapeed, on 01/22/2008, -0/+3Carbon Fiber???
- inactive, on 01/22/2008, -0/+3Ok all kidding aside, How the hell do they think they will be able to get water up that high. Do they realize the difficulties of pumping water that high? They will need to ( at minimum) build reservoirs which will add tremendous weight at those heights.
This is why architects draw... and engineers actually build !!!! - rand21althor, on 01/22/2008, -0/+3That Ultima Tower is just....amazing. Opens up all kinds of possibilities.
- Kronos6948, on 01/22/2008, -0/+3Morlocks.
- Rndm_Tngnt, on 01/22/2008, -0/+3You also should consider the fact that some of these Arcologies are designed to be fully sustainable. That is to say that once built, the could theoretically be sealed and still be able to maintain their populations.
At least, i'm pretty sure that's what the idea is. - MacSuxWindozSux, on 01/22/2008, -0/+3Burj Dubai:
818 Meters With Antenna.
643 Meters to the roof.

It was one of the best method in flying. Human ingenuity should have continued in developing and improving the Zeppelin. Think about it, people today would have been flying in bedrooms, with room service, with a bath, and a kitchen. The Zeppelins of the early 20th Century had all of those luxuries within it. I am somewhat disappointed that Zeppelin never regained people's attention as another method in air travel. -
