- vtbarrera, on 02/03/2009, -2/+38Wow. A decent list, but definitely forgot some of the better ones. The Rokerij does have a great atmosphere, but is that the only criteria here? The lack of Barney's (which consistently produces some of the best weed in Amsterdam, and has the Cannabis Cup trophies to prove it) and The Abraxis (one of the best coffee shops/pubs in town) makes this list a little less than stellar.
- enantiodromia, on 08/29/2008, -7/+34No wonder Amsterdam has such a high crime rate...
/s - inactive, on 08/29/2008, -3/+19"Remember marijuana IS illegal."
Not in Amsterdam, moron. - inactive, on 08/29/2008, -2/+17Dampkring is always so packed you can't even sit down.
The lack of Barney's shows these are amateurs.
Baba's has GREAT hash muffins and the cool upstairs lounge.
This is such a lame concept for an article anyway.
Your own style determines which shops you like. The author prefers the touristy pits?
Lame.
As other's say, Bluebird.
Grey Area! Tiny but cool, and right across the street from a chocolate shop.
This is like an article naming the "coolest" bars in NYC. Pointless. - mdjohnson1, on 08/29/2008, -5/+18I need some coffee.
- sroop, on 08/29/2008, -2/+15I'm not your buddy, Guy!
- infiniphunk, on 08/29/2008, -5/+18obvious troll is obvious
- LeonHRodriguez, on 08/29/2008, -1/+10I want to say think the post is sarcastic, but is it?
- thatsmyaibo, on 08/29/2008, -2/+11The funny thing is the Dutch don't treat weed like Americans. You seem like an immature stoner and that's not how the Dutch view the use of pot. It's a tourist attraction more than anything.
- thestranger, on 08/29/2008, -2/+10man you must really like weed...........
(not being a dick, I am generally impressed by your knowledge of "coffee shops") - algaeturd, on 08/29/2008, -1/+9"Seriously, dude. I'd NEVER leave...."
No wonder Americans have such a tweaked concept of what pot is or isn't.
The problem with pot only exists if you do, indeed 'never leave.' The majority of adult Americans can enjoy pot responsibly without living in a Van Wilder/National Lampoon/White Castle teen fantasy movie.
And like anything else, if you could have it on demand, you'd get sick of it to a degree eventually. - DyceFreak, on 08/29/2008, -1/+9actually, apparently TOBACCO is the ILLEGAL drug of choice in Amsterdam (indoors)
- masterdelrond, on 08/29/2008, -0/+7To be honest i thought most of the ones they mentioned where just your basic "guide book" places. Your right Overmind, Abraxas is one of the best i have been to - http://www.abraxasparadise.nl/index.php.
- BrettFromTibet, on 08/29/2008, -2/+9This was a nice list... I haven't been to Amsterdam in years so I can't compare notes... but it's well worth being selective and finding a coffee shop with nice dope and a good, friendly vibe. Some of the touristy ones (especially near the central station) are downright rude and terrible to foreginers - and they will sell you dodgy gear and demand you buy lots of drinks and run up your bill.
Also, be sure to check out the imported hash - it has distinct flavors and character. I recommend Malana Creme from the Indian Himalaya. It is the 'creme de la creme' indica resin grown in the perfect natural environment... just like Champagne or Burgundy are raised in the perfect microclimate in France.... this is the best Himalaya dope and some of the most expensive and sought after stuff by the serious smokers in Amsterdam. - EarlOfLade, on 08/29/2008, -1/+8My first visit to a coffee shop in A'dam was back in 1972, I was 15 and on Interrail with a friend of mine. We were sitting there enjoying some nice herb when a police officer sat down besides us, talk about getting paranoid! LOL He just smiled and got a cup of coffee from the server and inhaled all the smoke in the room while enjoying his coffee, after which he continued on his patrol in the Red Light District... Fun!
We left stoned out of our minds! - inactive, on 08/29/2008, -5/+11lol...
Christians - HouseofEl, on 08/29/2008, -2/+8The Grasshopper is like the McDonald's of Amsterdam coffee shops, but hey everyone enjoys a big mac once and a while!
- jedinate, on 08/30/2008, -0/+5An alright list, if you are a tourist ( Hello? The Grasshopper, you might as well suggest the Bulldog, so we can smoke with American GI's on leave). Having been there 9 times, I'll tell you the smaller shops are the Gems.
Try- The Wall, Ali Baba's (my all time fav) or The Doors for a more chill crowd.
Needless to say I would take the worst Coffee shop in NL to the (no) alternative we have here. - hiPpymIck, on 08/30/2008, -0/+5the /s at the bottom means sarcasm
but ill let you off cos from your profile youre Dutch
.. and can maybe suggest a good place for tourists to try - infiniphunk, on 08/29/2008, -1/+6Ah Holland. A country that doesn't incarcerate its population for smoking or eating a plant.
- LeonHRodriguez, on 08/29/2008, -0/+4You need to come over to British Columbia and write a report on the top 7 species out here; I too would like to know what outsiders think of our product haha
- b8man99, on 08/30/2008, -0/+4The women look better in Amsterdam. Sorry.
- thenativeraver, on 08/29/2008, -0/+4Don't forget to grab a space cake while you're there!
I can't believe it didn't mention la canna! - producerism, on 08/30/2008, -0/+4amen. Barneys and Abraxas are staples. Grey Area is a lesser known favorite (and so great because they are right across the street from DNA Genetics, awesome growers from Cali) - but the exclusion of Barney's is very strange.
- funkytaco, on 08/30/2008, -0/+4You're right it is. But, I've never slept with four women at once before going there, so I have to give it 5 stars. ;)
- inactive, on 08/30/2008, -1/+5Johan Marcus Guy,
You MOVE me man, You MOVE me...
When can we meet up? I'd love to hear all about your crazy adventures...and maybe have a few of our own.
With sincere love and deep appreciation,
-FattyMcgee311 - pennvneff, on 08/30/2008, -0/+4I'm sorry but any list that leaves off The Grey Area is not to be taken seriously.
http://www.greyarea.nl - photomike, on 08/29/2008, -1/+4Buried for no Abraxas, Blue Bird, or mention of the Ms. Pac Man machine in the basement of Dolphins.
- gwinerreniwg, on 08/30/2008, -0/+3Agreed - Grey Area is the smallest, smelliest coffee shoppe, but it is the friendliest, and has THE BEST weed in A'dam - even perhaps all of Netherlands. The place is run by a couple of expat Americans - very nice guys. If you only buy weed once in Amsterdam, it should be here.
- T8erT0T, on 08/29/2008, -0/+3Dolphins was a cool spot.
- yohnstoppable, on 08/30/2008, -0/+3You should have spelled out your sarcasm tag instead of just "/s" to avoid idiot responses.
- pauls88, on 08/29/2008, -0/+3grey area is best for picking up
dampkring or a greenhouse is best for sittin in and chill, ing, out. - Mugiwara, on 08/29/2008, -0/+3I'm Dutch and I live in Amsterdam so It's pretty cool to see what outsiders think about the best places in town ^^
- jayobear, on 08/30/2008, -0/+3You know what fattymcgee311, I'm also Johan Marcus Guy's biggest fan.
- hiPpymIck, on 08/30/2008, -0/+3from what i remember its mostly full of students/backpackers from just about anywhere..
..i guess its on everyones must visit list - spaceshipsix, on 08/29/2008, -0/+3I hope the regulars at Trinity don't mind that he's giving away their quiet local bar.
- WiseWeasel, on 08/29/2008, -0/+3If you want to try one of the most potent hashes in Dam, pick up some Black Bombay from Smoky's Coffee Shop located in Rembrandtplein (Rembrandt Plaza). You will not regret it. Note: Black Bombay contains opium, so don't try it if you're allergic to opiates.
- Sublimin4L, on 08/30/2008, -0/+3I want to go to Amsterdam some day but I'm afraid there's going to be Eurotrip-esque American college dropout kids running around going, "DDDUUUUUUUDDDDE...this is soooooo awesome (giggles)."
Christ. - jedinate, on 08/30/2008, -0/+3Thank you for mentioning Baba's, my favorite shop ever.
- trzynascie, on 08/30/2008, -0/+2This list is incomplete and misleading without Gray Area and Barney's.
- b8man99, on 08/30/2008, -0/+2The world lacks more stylish and classy coffeeshops. Most are too dingy and scummy for my liking.
- ninjathis, on 08/30/2008, -0/+2actually about 20 dollars a gram sounds about right
and that is for good stuff here
15 Euros = 21.987 - mattyx, on 08/30/2008, -0/+2Lekker.
- inactive, on 08/30/2008, -1/+3DampKring was awesome. There was a resident cat that was more than happy to be pet.
- jedinate, on 08/30/2008, -0/+2Agreed and the Bulldog is the Burger King...
- yoder141, on 08/29/2008, -1/+3I just got back from Amsterdam about a month ago and this list left out the best shop that I found. Grey Area is easily the best shop there. It is small but I was told by many different people that visit regularly that it has the best stuff in town. I agree. There was a line out the door the entire time I was there.
- thegrantman, on 08/30/2008, -0/+2That bud looks like a slice of pizza with everything on it! Or maybe I'm just stoned.......
- jedinate, on 08/30/2008, -0/+2The Doors Coffee Shop has amazing Morrison fan art, on coasters, stuck to the walls.
- turkoftheplains, on 08/29/2008, -0/+2Lack of the Gray Area is totally inexcusable.
- infiniphunk, on 08/29/2008, -1/+3One more reason I'm glad to be in Canada
