- kgool, on 02/04/2008, -4/+16It may not be as dramatic, but there is one famous star shaped fort in the USA.

- Sinai, on 02/04/2008, -1/+9My analysis, strictly from a layman point of view...
Probably it is difficult to invade a point of the star, and even moreso to invade between the points due to overlapping fields of fire. Imagine in a circular fort, defenders can only shoot attackers with bows/x-bows/guns/etc at the point and very nearby, whereas in a star fort everybody between two points of a star has a direct line of fire at any attackers. Also, note that the line of fire will be directed from at least one flank, and as they approach closer to the wall, either both flanks or one flank and the rear, which is far harder to defend against and results in much higher casualty rates and thus more harmful to morale. Classic circular design probably allows a shieldwall and/or deployed mobile cover/siege weapons to deflect a large majority of missiles aimed at attackers.
Also, circular walls are weaker than linear ones and present a larger profile for siege weapons to hit. - cruik, on 02/04/2008, -6/+13These are what the pizza delivery guys see when they have bad dreams.
