- Enderic, on 01/05/2008, -3/+54Meh, Black Mesa is better.
- roguedragon, on 01/05/2008, -3/+28Well, Black Mesa is cool and all, but I must rather prefer Aperture Labs. Who can go wrong with a portal gun? lol.
- inactive, on 01/05/2008, -1/+22None of these facilities have a ventilation shaft above the toilets that you can camp in :(
- meebabo77, on 01/05/2008, -0/+14Large Hadron Collider FTW
- Oronar, on 01/05/2008, -0/+13The sentient AI going crazy and killing all of its staff with a neurotoxin? I believe that can go wrong.
- MikeonTV, on 01/05/2008, -0/+13completely mind bottling!! Just Cruzy!
- biohzrd, on 01/05/2008, -0/+12Can I give this two diggs? While I have seen a few of these before, there are a few amazing ones I have never seen.
- Shogi, on 01/05/2008, -1/+12These are mind-bottling. Really, it just blows my mind how complex this stuff is. I have immense respect for scientists working on this stuff.
- gincarnated, on 01/05/2008, -0/+9"in 2006 the machine unexpectedly produced plasmas with temperatures in excess of 3.6 billion °f. that’s hotter than the core of our sun."
Thats some scary *****. I want to say that I hope that whatever they're doing with #3 doesn't "unexpectedly" cause to earth to implode or something, but knowing all of humanity died with me makes me smile. - MasterThief117, on 01/05/2008, -0/+7Well, it was, until the military came in and killed most of the scientists.
- spektre1, on 01/05/2008, -0/+4... http://www.blackmesasource.com/ is by far the sexiest looking research facility I have ever had the chance to rebuild. (disclosure: I'm a level designer with the project.)
- SKick, on 01/05/2008, -0/+4Where's Dexter's Lab?
- inactive, on 01/05/2008, -0/+4I know this isn't a standard Digg-suitable comment but,
HOLY ***** *****. DIGG, DUGG, FAVORITED! - kjcdude, on 01/05/2008, -0/+3http://doc.cern.ch//archive/electronic/cern/others ...
wow... - hardcore718, on 01/05/2008, -0/+3Where is boris? "I am INVINCIBLE"
- masterc, on 01/05/2008, -1/+4Mind bottling? Lol.
- MacEnvy, on 01/05/2008, -0/+3Yeah, the VLA radio telescopes are very cool. I was lucky enough to visit the site a few years ago, and it's even more incredible in person. Each of those dishes is bigger than a house, and they're all on tracks so they can be repositioned at will. They've got a nice little visitors' center too.
- mockupscaledown, on 01/05/2008, -1/+4Buried for not having the Oral B labs, replete with floating touch screens, space doors, and dentists in lab coats.
- achoo5000, on 01/05/2008, -0/+2Where's LIGO?
http://www.ligo.caltech.edu - qeffect, on 01/05/2008, -1/+3Yeah, mind-bottling. You know, when things are so crazy it gets your thoughts all trapped, like in a bottle?
- inactive, on 01/05/2008, -0/+2What if they create a parallel universe in which Ron Paul has a chance of winning the Presidency ?
- Terr01, on 01/05/2008, -0/+2Meh, at least not from the movies, no. Creepy, but hardly cool-looking.
- umber2007, on 01/05/2008, -0/+1I have visited many Radio Telescopes too, they are indeed impressive. I've never been to the VLA though.
- RandomSkratch, on 01/09/2008, -0/+1Can you rub the bottle after?
- SourWorm, on 01/05/2008, -0/+1Well on the positive side you hope it doesn't cause the earth to implode and on the ... scary ... side you seem to be giddy at the idea that whenever you die all of humanity dies with you. I sincerely hope you never have access to anything that could remotely cause that type of damage.
- weezcnr, on 01/05/2008, -0/+1If only if only we would observe proton decay... sigh.
- RunnyBabbit, on 01/07/2008, -0/+1I was just thinking that the level designers of HL1 should have gone out to some of these places. With the exception of the chamber from the beginning of the game, I don't recall seeing anything similar to supercolliders or anechoic chambers anywhere in the expansive Black Mesa labs. You'd think they'd have one or two.
- muniak, on 01/05/2008, -0/+1To... stop radiowaves from reading your brain? Why not just use a tinfoil hat? It's so mobile!
- HayString, on 01/05/2008, -1/+2mind bottling?
- Wyrmfell, on 01/05/2008, -0/+1That LHC just scares me.
Prepare for unforeseen consequences, May 2008. - mllawso, on 01/05/2008, -2/+3They're just bidding their time as they quietly build their secret giant robot army.
Eventually they'll set us up the bomb. - onionoino, on 01/05/2008, -0/+1All personnel report to surface levels
- umber2007, on 01/05/2008, -0/+1Dugg for awesomeness. I've seen the array of radio telescopes before, but the rest are new to me. What I would give to work at one of these. The anechoic facility would make the home theatre room of my dreams!
- Frisbinator, on 01/05/2008, -0/+1Fascinating stuff. It gives one a feeling of accomplishment for the human race to read about these facilities and what they're capable of.
- brianjking, on 01/05/2008, -0/+1What about Ars Electronica? http://www.aec.at/en/index.asp (if you replace /en/ with /de/ it should give you Deutsch (German).
- rbridenb, on 01/05/2008, -0/+1yeah, what if instead of just recreating conditions of the big bang they actually recreate *the big bang*?
...this has all happened before...this will all happen again... - mechengineer, on 01/05/2008, -0/+1Canada has a neutrino observatory similar to Japan's, except that it's tiny in comparison. There are a bunch of them around the world, usually of the same style (deep underground, spherical, filled with water, loads of photomultiplier tubes, etc.).
- reaper, on 01/05/2008, -1/+1dammit! i wanted to be the first one to say a black mesa joke!
- marlinman, on 01/05/2008, -0/+0do enlighten us - if you've got the GUTs!
- blckt, on 01/05/2008, -0/+0Holy christ...
DO WANT - rjbourc, on 01/05/2008, -0/+0Black Mesa will photograph better once the renovations are complete.
All in good time. - duggtodeath, on 01/05/2008, -8/+8What? No Umbrella research facilities?
- 0071, on 01/05/2008, -0/+0wow! it makes you wonder what's going on in the "top secret" world today, cause I'm sure this must be old hat just for the fact that we're discussing it now!
- verkon, on 01/05/2008, -1/+1What about the Halos? They're preety darn cool.
- umber2007, on 01/05/2008, -1/+0Why the tinfoil hat reference?
- Xinephzero, on 01/05/2008, -3/+2Yes, but where are the Weighted Companion Cubes?
- greenriver572, on 01/05/2008, -3/+2that's some straight matrix *****.
- Saaruto, on 01/05/2008, -6/+4"This was a triumph.
I'm making a note here: HUGE SUCCESS.
It's hard to overstate my satisfaction.
Aperture Science"
You know the rest...I'm sure you do. - thephuckphase, on 01/05/2008, -6/+4japan has the most surreal and intriguing facility...unsurprsingly. it's amazing they don't have more power over nations with the technology they've accomplished
- laafiera, on 01/05/2008, -7/+0Seems to me I just figured out where the crop circle are coming from!!
