- Trekhawk, on 02/21/2009, -0/+22"Dirty, violent, corrupt, and sinking further beneath sea level with each passing year, New Orleans will always be on the precipice of disaster. And that’s just how the locals like it."
Because nothing is more exhilarating than staring down Mother Nature and not knowing if you're home will be there next year. - Biscuitz, on 02/20/2009, -4/+17So basically, any where outside the USA, other than N.O.? Lol
- DivisibleByZero, on 02/21/2009, -0/+11Buried for no Jericho, Kansas. They have a salt mine, a tank, and a nuclear bomb.
- Bloodwine, on 02/21/2009, -0/+9Buried for New Orleans. Smells of, "please people move back and tourists come visit". Out of all the metropolitan areas in the U.S., they think that one is the safe bet?!
- ninjaknowell, on 02/20/2009, -0/+8I would've never thought to live in these places.
- bri719, on 02/21/2009, -0/+6great.... where would that be?
- satanherself, on 02/20/2009, -0/+6I live in Cincinnati, Ohio and I would like you all know know the economy has taken a huge dump on this state.
- tomcat4u, on 02/21/2009, -0/+5Wait, wait, Vilnius, the capital of the same country that just experienced riots with 7000+ people in response to the tanking economy? The Baltic states rode a gravy train after joining the EU, but are paying the price for it right now. If you took the advice of this article and went there looking for jobs, you would probably be screwed and piss off all the natives for going after their jobs.

Don't get me wrong, Vilnius is an awesome city. It's like an undiscovered cultural mecca, with beautiful architecture rivaling many Mediterranian locales. Go there in the summertime, it is really a treat (and DAMN if Lithuanian girls aren't the HOTTEST)
Most important is honesty, and this article is lacking in it. - divinediva, on 02/20/2009, -3/+6It's so cheap to eat out at great restaurants and there are some amazing day trips.
- inactive, on 02/21/2009, -0/+3Your electoral votes went to Mr Bush twice. People get the government they deserve (and the economic policies of that government, whether they deserve those or not).
- hobojohnn, on 02/21/2009, -0/+2I plan on living in Saigon for 5 years after finishing culinary school. The food is wonderful and extremely fresh.
- Typhoon2009, on 02/21/2009, -0/+2doesn't cape town have a bad crime problem?
***** doesn't south africa in general have a crime problem? this is the country that brought us this device: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blaster_(flamethrower ... - inactive, on 02/21/2009, -1/+3I gotta say... I can't imagine why anyone would say that place would actually be a viable place to live. I was there last year and couldn't wait to leave the whole time. We saw Nah Trang and Saigon (which is actually referred to as Ho Chi Minh City) and they both sucked. You get a very on-the-edge-of-3rd-world feeling there. But hey, if you want to live in a slum and drive a scooter to your daily grind in the rice fields don't let me stop you.
I'll put up a couple pictures and videos for anyone who thinks I'm just talking out of my ass. - I4uga, on 02/21/2009, -0/+2I'll take Saigon for $500 Alex!
- rucksack, on 02/20/2009, -2/+4Great picks on this list - I'm especially enthusiastic about Saigon - wicked cheap, lots of energy, a thriving ex pat scene, great food - $1 bowls of pho with fresh herbs....there's a great yoga studio in Saigon and plenty of jobs in banking, teaching, graphic design, etc. You can live well on $400 per month - that includes rent, food and entertainment.
- rucksack, on 02/20/2009, -0/+2I would LOVE to spend some time in the Big Easy
- REBECCAFRIEDMAN, on 02/20/2009, -3/+5New Orleans will always be a fun town, hurricane or no. Nothing beats Jazz Fest!
- deva14, on 02/20/2009, -0/+2Interesting mix. I'd love to live in HCMC for a few months, and I've been dying to get to Cape Town!
- lofispy, on 02/21/2009, -0/+1ditto for Columbus...
- rucksack, on 02/20/2009, -0/+1um, no, there are lots of places besides Slovenia and Saigon that are expensive and no fun
- tidu, on 02/21/2009, -0/+1do they worship the bomb?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pScMt788g08 - CpAmerica8, on 02/21/2009, -0/+1Every one of these cities has been a war zone/ disaster area in the past 100 years.
- rucksack, on 02/20/2009, -0/+1do you still have the zoo?
- kevinbowen, on 02/21/2009, -0/+1Interesting list. My Great-Grandmother was born in Vilnius. I would love to spend some time there.
- Daniel591992, on 02/21/2009, -0/+1I'll move to Brazil - dual citizenship ftw!
- inactive, on 02/23/2009, -0/+1Thats it im packing my bags and im off economy or no economy lol
- rald84, on 02/21/2009, -0/+1don't forget detroit!!!!!!!!
- rucksack, on 02/21/2009, -0/+1Saigon has lots of free, fast WIFI
- merlin484, on 02/21/2009, -0/+1Stop calling it Saigon! It's been Ho Chi Minh for 30 years now.
- pcerritos, on 02/21/2009, -0/+1I do believe I could live in Medellin..
- adeelarshad82, on 02/21/2009, -0/+1dugg for cape town
- AlanJV, on 02/21/2009, -0/+1Soviet style buildings? Count me in!
- rucksack, on 02/21/2009, -1/+2I don't think you got the full picture, utahnguy - yes, Saigon has an edge of the 3rd world feel to it, but there's plenty of comfort and luxe too, if that's your bag. I like a mix - a gin and tonic on a rooftop bar one night and noodles at the corner cafe the next. Very few folks in Saigon work in rice-fields - did you just pass through the city? It's very cosmopolitan. There are plenty of nice apartments.
And the locals call it Saigon, or the Than Po, not HCMC. - rucksack, on 02/21/2009, -0/+1there's always english teaching...
- dpgranger, on 02/21/2009, -0/+1Buffalo NY is a good place because home values are already the lowest in the country and have only dropped 1% in the past year.
- satanherself, on 02/21/2009, -0/+1My electoral votes were not for BUSH!!!
- rucksack, on 02/21/2009, -0/+1you're an idiot
- inactive, on 02/21/2009, -0/+0I was hoping the city in MAD MAX was going to be on the list nothing says safety like going back to walled cities
- pumpelly, on 02/21/2009, -0/+0Gimme Pitcairn Island.
- inactive, on 02/21/2009, -1/+1Pretty funny/interesting read. But, you know one of the best ways we can directly stimulate the economy, would be to start spending a little of our money in it?
- Genrre, on 02/21/2009, -1/+1I am going to need a chart comparing the bandwidth per dollar in each of those cities before I consider moving.
- inactive, on 02/21/2009, -4/+4should read BEST CITIES to get KILLED
- DS011, on 02/21/2009, -1/+1This post is so Gay
- daisuke75248, on 02/22/2009, -0/+0I read that Washington never gets hit really hard when there's an recession.
- inactive, on 02/21/2009, -0/+0Well obviously I was being sarcastic about working in a rice field but my point remains that opportunity for high paying work is pretty - sparse - at best. And it doesn't just have a "feel" of being on the edge of third world, you literally ARE on the edge of third world (watch my 3rd clip to see what I'm talking about. That was taken literally minutes outside of Saigon).
And finally don't get me wrong, Vietnam is a must see for any self respecting globe trotter, I just can't imagine ever permanently living there. I said I couldn't wait to leave mostly because while I was there I knew we were going to Singapore right after and as fun as Vietnam may be, it can't hold a candle to Singapore. - inactive, on 02/21/2009, -2/+2The only one I can agree with is Saigon.
Vilnius is gorgeous, but it is USDA Zone 5 - COLD AS HELL right now. Look up the weather for today and see for yourself.
NOLA - Third world rathole and ghetto with third world levels of violent crime and squalor and corruption from the average cop right up to the mayor. No thanks.
Medellin? Whoever wrote that is surely into drugs. My good buddy is from Medellin and it's a violent hellhole. He has been shot, his brother stabbed, and family members 'express'-kidnapped. Maybe the author had a good time there for three days, but he was lucky if so. Medellin is a war zone. Stay away.
Washington DC is probably a safe bet if you like ghettos, Obama is throwing tons of tax dollars at government programs and boondoggles, and much of it will be landing in DC for a decade if not more. - Ebacherville, on 02/21/2009, -1/+1best place to be when the economy falls through the floor (gets really bad), in the country away from people where you have land that you can grow food on and raise animals to provide you with food to eat and trade for other commodities you may need. Bartering will be the currency of choice when the dollar collapses.
