25 Most Dangerous Neighborhoods
Your Odds of Being a Victim
Why neighborhoods and not cities? Even the cities with the highest crime rates can have relatively safe neighborhoods, and thus it is less useful to generalize about an entire city. But using exclusive data developed by Dr. Schiller at NeighborhoodScout.com, and based on FBI data from all 17,000 local law enforcement agencies, our gallery counts down the 25 neighborhoods with the highest predicted rates of violent crime in America.

My Chances of Becoming a Victim Here (in one year): 1 in 4 - L0NER, on 06/23/2009, -5/+39You know what is dangerous? A 25 page slide show.
- STBAT25, on 06/22/2009, -4/+34I can't believe nowhere in LA made the list.
- AmyVernon, on 06/22/2009, -1/+28Looks like Baltimore needs McNulty back on the beat.
- Modio, on 06/23/2009, -1/+24Dugg because they have a click-through gallery *and* a list on the first page.
- Heywoodj, on 06/22/2009, -0/+21In Newark they'll just take your car.
In Camden you will be killed, raped and eaten.
In that order if your lucky. - inactive, on 06/23/2009, -3/+23by chance any black people in these neighborhoods?
- FightTest, on 06/23/2009, -1/+21Data for the #1 slot is skewed because that's where the Bengals' player housing unit is.
- ironeus, on 06/22/2009, -2/+21Glad to see Detroit is not in the top 10 list for once.
- suckaPU, on 06/23/2009, -4/+23lol all they are doing is highlighting the black areas
- AmyVernon, on 06/22/2009, -3/+20Does anyone still live in Detroit?
- cyclopropene, on 06/23/2009, -1/+18They forgot:
Washington, D.C.
Neighborhood: East Capitol Street NE and 1st Street, NE
Found Within ZIP Code(s): 20515
More people have been robbed blind here than anywhere else in the country.
My chances of becoming a victim here (in one year): 1 in 1 - randypanda, on 06/23/2009, -0/+16LA isn't that dangerous. Its always portrayed more dangerous in movies and media for some reason.
- joshqpublic, on 06/22/2009, -2/+17clearly these dudes have never been to Newark NJ
- mnickerson66, on 06/22/2009, -1/+13Can't believe none of Chicago's West Side hoods made the list.... Maybe that's good news.
- DRT23, on 06/23/2009, -0/+11or Compton
or Alameda in the north - tresbizarre, on 06/23/2009, -1/+12I call shenanigans, I'm from Cincinnati and I never have trouble when I go to that neighborhood to buy crack.
BTW, the main Sam Adams Brewery is right there too:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q& ... - cygnus2112, on 06/23/2009, -0/+10I'd rather face the Reavers, then!
- digggggggggg, on 06/23/2009, -4/+14Great to hear that you feel safe! We'll be sure to keep an eye out for your name in the obituaries.
- condensed, on 06/23/2009, -0/+9Yeah, Chicago does suck. Semi trucks have to duct tape the air couplings to the truck. Once I had to blow through about 5 stop lights to shake vagrants from the truck. A cop saw me do it and didn't even look twice at me.
- peterc18st, on 06/23/2009, -0/+9Where is the South Bronx and Bed Stuy Brooklyn. Being an EMT in NYC and working in the South Bronx (138 st/Willis ave) is always a good night for a shooting, stabbing, rape, fight, toilet brush up ass. Yes that was real.
- Hypomanic, on 06/23/2009, -1/+10Funny. The Dallas neighborhood is where Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. intersects Malcolm X Blvd.
- AmyVernon, on 06/22/2009, -0/+9Yeah, Camden's WAY worse than Newark. I don't have any problems driving in any neighborhood in Newark in the daytime. Fortunately, Camden's too far away for that to be an issue for me.
- adam1378, on 06/23/2009, -0/+9If there was not Detroit,
there would not be a Robo Cop,
Saturday daytime movies would suck - TheAdvent, on 06/23/2009, -1/+10Um actually a pretty good list, you know, for those of us that live in the U.S.
- fourwunfive, on 06/23/2009, -1/+10there is a demographical pattern here that i can't quite seem to put my hands on...
- praisethelard, on 06/23/2009, -0/+8You know it's bad when Google doesn't have a street-view running through the area.
- highgeere, on 06/23/2009, -0/+7Not accurate? The list is based on the rate of violent crime, not the writer's opinion of what neighborhoods are the worst.
- praisethelard, on 06/23/2009, -1/+7Cool story, bro.
- evaburrito, on 06/22/2009, -4/+10I live smack in the middle of one of these neighborhoods, and I disagree with the label of "dangerous". Dangerous for who? The statistics may be right, but the crime here is drug and gang related -maybe a bike gets stolen once in a while. I am not in a gang and I don't deal drugs, therefore I do not have the stated 1 in 8 chance of becoming a victim. Having lived in the college areas here- where predators commute to commit crime against vulnerable young students, I would confidently state that I feel MUCH less likely of being a victim of home invasion or rape or mugging or other bodily harm than I do in other local urban areas.
- FirstOne1, on 06/23/2009, -0/+6I was surprised to see Chicago so often. I've been there a few times and have always enjoyed myself. Must of been in the touristy spots.
- BeShirtHappy, on 06/22/2009, -5/+11The closest city to me is Memphis.
- highgeere, on 06/23/2009, -1/+6Or scroll down on the first page?
- cogitocogito, on 06/23/2009, -1/+6All this means is that there isn't a safe section of the city. The crime is spread around. (glass half-empty)
- Tw3ek, on 06/23/2009, -0/+5Agreed. After all the Detroit bashing that has become commonplace on Digg, it's nice to see us not shown as the worst for something.
- wrathbone, on 06/23/2009, -0/+5That's not a neighborhood. That's a city. The murder is just more spread out there.
- bearcat8543, on 06/23/2009, -1/+6proud to go to the University of Cincinnati and live a mile away from num 1 (Over the Rhine).
- Chakat, on 06/23/2009, -0/+5Dude, 6th and market is tame. I lived in Albuquerque and had people threaten to cut off my face because I wouldn't give them any spare change. Bout all you'll get there is dodgy people trying to sell you drugs.
- brettg102, on 06/23/2009, -1/+6I live 12 blocks from Over the Rhine. GET IT UP.
In all honesty, these stats are misleading as always. It's violence per population. OTR is a like 12 square block area with I bet 800 people living in it or something. However, it is where all the homies go to gangbang and sell their drugs, so it is disproportionate. It is not the most violent place in the United States by a long shot. I do however, feel the need to carry a concealed handgun on the off chance I'm there. - ghatid, on 06/23/2009, -1/+6Thank you so much, I buried the damn thing for the annoying ass website.
- rdldr1, on 06/23/2009, -0/+5Stay out of the South Side, you'll be fine. Watch your back if the street names become numbers.
- Silverskater145, on 06/23/2009, -1/+5Half of the neighborhoods had a Martin Luther King street running through somewhere.
- inactive, on 06/23/2009, -2/+6Crime should be against the law. I'm very much against it. Bad stuff.
- praisethelard, on 06/23/2009, -1/+5Aw, not this "my country is more dangerous than your country" pissing match..
- MothBoy, on 06/23/2009, -3/+7Nothing in Salt Lake City? What is that all about?
- HurricaneDC, on 06/23/2009, -1/+5Good to see DC isn't anywhere on that list.
- CylonsOfTheLamb, on 06/23/2009, -0/+4I disagree, Chicago isn't that dangerous. OK, my knowledge is second hand, but it comes from a pretty reliable source. My cousin has lived in Chicago for years and tells me the crime isn't as bad as everyone would have you believe. He works as a tailgunner on a bread truck, so he spends most of the work day out on the streets, and it's been over a year since the last time he went through more than one belt of ammo on his shift.
- CanUTube, on 06/23/2009, -1/+5*Insert missing neighborhood here*
- epimortum, on 06/23/2009, -0/+4Thank you, thank you, thank you. Someone putting some sanity here. While I don't generally make a habit of going to OTR I've got nothin' against going' over the Findlay Market. But then again Ohio drivers are nuts and it's best to stay on this side of the river no matter what's taking you over there.
Peace from NKY - ZonGuy, on 06/23/2009, -0/+4Chicago has a lot of bad areas you can end up in if you're a tourist who thinks it's safe.
