- stukdog, on 08/18/2008, -1/+117It's amazing how far technology has brought us. I wonder what would have happened if the Phelps Butterfly race happened here. With that .001 second difference, there's no way they could have called it without the electronic walls.

same pool back in 1936 - uzusan, on 08/18/2008, -4/+80Quite surprising that it survived the second world war.
- HotSaucePanCake, on 08/18/2008, -1/+72Looks in great shape to me. My guess is that since there are no leaves on the trees that they are draining the pools for fall and winter. The tiles are all intact and boards look painted. This is still an active pool in my estimation.
- rivalius13, on 08/18/2008, -1/+72I know pools that are a lot newer than that and are in far worse shape.
- staple, on 08/18/2008, -0/+55I was there last summer. It was being used as a community pool by about 30 people. The entire facility is pretty amazing and the Nazi inspirations are apparent. Everything is large, cold, and made of stone. It was inspired by Roman architecture because of Hitler's love of tying the Aryan race back to Rome. The stadium itself is very impressive and still used as a soccer pitch today

- MarshalBanana, on 08/18/2008, -1/+33Where is the value in bombing that?
- blckt, on 08/18/2008, -2/+31I imagine they'd grant victory to the more Aryan swimmer
- inactive, on 08/18/2008, -8/+37michael phelps gives great head
- bluesatin, on 08/18/2008, -6/+32Well at least we can say it was well built, looks pretty sturdy to me!
- dsmx, on 08/19/2008, -0/+23Aiming for 1 small target was not generally how bombing raids were carried out in WW2.
- SqAR, on 08/18/2008, -0/+22It's still in use:

btw. "bad" is german for "bath" (if you wonder about the URL) - DannoSpeaks, on 08/18/2008, -1/+22Adolf Keifer is actually still alive, and is a very interesting person. He joined the navy during the war and is credited for saving countless american lives due to his insistence that every navyman learn to properly swim. He started the "Victory Stroke" which was taught to everyone in the navy. He went on to start a company that works on improving the sport and it's equipment, and is still very much involved to this day.
- Hodor, on 08/18/2008, -3/+22Outside, where they wished they had thicker swimsuits.
- diggonit, on 08/18/2008, -1/+18Holy crap. The winner of the gold medal in the 100 backstroke in the 1936 games was a man named Adolf Keifer. He was an American. Weird. He did it in 105.9 vs 52.5 by American Piersol in 2008.
Here are all of the '36 swimming results. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swimming_at_the_1936_ ... - bblande, on 08/18/2008, -1/+18The pools look fine...the bleachers....not so much.
- jserio, on 08/18/2008, -0/+13Agreed! They should fill this up and start using it. It's still in great shape.
- geekmansworld, on 08/18/2008, -10/+22Something eerie and weird about this.
- pimpslaper, on 08/18/2008, -3/+15The pool, and diving area are still in use today. I was in Berlin 2 years ago and the pool was in use by many swimmers during the summer. This picture looks like it was taken in the winter, and being that the pool is outside, it would be closed due to the weather/season.
- stormgren, on 08/18/2008, -1/+13.01, not .001.
That being said,
Also, even at national meets like the one I went to last week have timing system malfunctions. I think Phelps won, but a lot of races at this meet were decided by .05 seconds or less... I am a competitive swimmer and I still question how accurate these timing systems are. They still use serial ports with proprietary connections to the pads, for one thing, and most of the technology is outdated... This is even at the US Open and Junior Nationals at Minnesota a few weeks ago. - karaokekidd, on 08/19/2008, -0/+11Even surviving the timescale is impressive. They don't make 'em like that anymore.
- rivalius13, on 08/18/2008, -4/+15Just like a dolphin. *dreams*
- GravyTrain6, on 08/18/2008, -0/+11is it still legal to land feet first?
- MrTito, on 08/19/2008, -1/+121:05.9. Just sayin. 105.9 makes it look like 1:45.9.
- Primous, on 08/18/2008, -0/+10Adolf actually used to be make the top 1000 most popular baby names so says the social security administration. Though after 1928 it pretty much disappears.
- stonebear, on 08/19/2008, -2/+12Quite a bit of the RAF bombing was for spite, in revenge for the German rocket attacks on London. Tit-for-tat old chum.
- mikesbaker, on 08/18/2008, -1/+10they probably do - likely this is a picture from winter

- MrChunks, on 08/18/2008, -6/+12I was thinking that while digging your comment. It's lucky you can change your mind.
- sulthernao, on 08/19/2008, -1/+7The other guy was Serbian and underwater slow-mo shows that Phelps did touch it first.

- stormofswords, on 08/19/2008, -0/+6I saw this last summer and it was pristine and full of kids and families swimming. It really looks a whole lot better than that.
- AROZ, on 08/19/2008, -0/+6Good for them. It would be a waste to tear all that down simply because Nazis built it. Also, talk about heritage buildings, even if they're not the kind of history which makes people feel warm. On this note, I'm reminded of the East German parliament in Berlin, which is being torn down so that some palace could be rebuilt.
- inactive, on 08/19/2008, -0/+6It's a simple switch.
