- Dumbledorito, on 06/27/2008, -0/+4216. Stay up the previous night playing video games or what have you so that by the time you stagger onto the plane you could sleep soundly on a bed of nails. When the flight attendants shake you awake at your destination, it'll feel like you've magically teleported across the country.

- cheezintern, on 06/27/2008, -0/+15I always fly with lots of liquor and prescription drugs....makes the 6 hours go by fast, and if we crash, I'm less inclined to worry about it.
- BoneStamp, on 06/27/2008, -0/+111. Check in online when possible
2. When you can't check in online, use the automated terminal at the check in desk. Then you won't give me a dirty look when I go to the front of the line to use the automated terminal because no one else is. It's kind of a like an ATM, except it gives you flight tickets instead of cash. They're not that complicated people, please use them and then there won't be a big line up and you get to see which seats are available rather than rely on the clerk to tell you which seats are available. - austenw, on 06/27/2008, -1/+11Bring gum to chew for take off and landing. It helps pop your ears as you descend so you don't get that pressure on yours ears.
- kensavage, on 06/27/2008, -1/+8don't fly without your pants on!!
- smeenz, on 06/27/2008, -0/+7Until they ban gum
- str3ama, on 06/27/2008, -1/+7Great tips, but for the first tip I generally choose to fly later in the day. It's part coincidence running into this as I'm going to be flying in 4 days time..what sucks is that I won't have Internet access during this time.

- breadfred, on 06/27/2008, -0/+4Just don't feel ***** when the flight attendant wakes you up for that all-important in-flight meal...
- justjayce, on 06/27/2008, -0/+417) Finally get the government to fix the air traffic control system. You know the one that still uses vacuum tubes instead of computer chips.....
- bgmowen, on 06/28/2008, -0/+3Good tips, only for Americans though
- inactive, on 06/27/2008, -0/+3I spent a couple years flying every monday/friday. Basically short hops through hubs known for getting backed up at the slightest hiccup.
First thing I learned was to travel light and comfortable. To expect to be delayed. Always have a good book. Drink lots of water. Wait to board. Relax, you'll eventually get home. - mon11uk, on 06/28/2008, -0/+3Good advice. I have flown 5 times the past month both nationally and internationally, and the lines have definitely gotten longer with every flight. Do check in online with your airline if possible - this takes away the hassle of waiting forever in a line with screaming kids and irate businessmen. Just print your boarding pass, and drop off your bags at marked kiosks. Then grab an iced latte, switch your iPod on, close your eyes, and hope your flight isn't canceled!
- Mysk, on 06/27/2008, -0/+3This is what I done on my first international flight. Not only does it help you sleep through (some of) the flight, but it also helps your body adjust to the sleeping schedule at your new location.
Like someone else said though, someone may wake you for the in-flight "meal".
Lastly, use the bathroom for a #2 before you head off to the airport. You don't want to try to use those lavatories on a turbulent flight. Trust me on this... - expertninja, on 06/27/2008, -1/+4"Sign up for the registered traveler program to take some of the pain out of the preflight experience."
So, you eliminate a bit of waiting, get your retina's scanned, then 10 years later when they have better cameras it's like Minority Report. I don't think so. - Superrob750, on 06/28/2008, -0/+2Bring your Ipod.
- havokdu, on 06/27/2008, -3/+513 ways to get blacklisted on most airlines...
- Silentnite85, on 06/28/2008, -0/+2Train's cost just as much as flying these days. When was the last time a train was economical around here? While cheaper then a car, still as expensive as a plane ticket and less convenient.
- S7aind, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1yeah, and they charge a ton for them now.
- breadfred, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1Over here they do - even if I take a flight to my homeland, the Netherlands, which is about an hour, you get an in-flight meal. And a drink. You wonder how they fit it all in.

- inactive, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1The best thing you can do to make your flying experience better is to not have any unrealistic expctations. There a re thousand and one things that can delay your flight. Weather, mechanical, legalities, etc,

- tarjan, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1Amtrak - WAS to NYC, 151 for acela express. 121 for regular, one way. 150-190 for return. Total travel time 4 hours on the train each way.
Delta - DCA to LGA - 158 round trip. Total time 2 hr 35 minutes including the 1.5hr early arrival. 1hr 5min in the air. - GothAlice, on 06/27/2008, -2/+30. Fly first class. And no, I didn't even bother to read the list yet. ¬_¬
- Ebjius, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1Don't mingle with the plebs, the air-taxi is the only way to fly with class.
- subhuman, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1Maybe for the passengers - nothing worse than being stuck in a crappy airport in the middle of russia because your SLF has changed his plans last minute....

- bdpf, on 06/28/2008, -3/+3Just had to log on to comment:
1. Drive or try a train. Even with the high cost of gas, its mostly cheaper and can be fun.
2. Use the the extra time on a train to read or get to know your opposite better.
3. Really relax on real reclining seats as the country side zips by.
5. Support the railroads and enjoy life. - rosa32, on 06/27/2008, -2/+0holidays in Japan, there are so interesting, that i don't afraid to fly by airplane
