- Long189, on 11/14/2009, -2/+59Who kills themselves while on vacation?
- darkphenox, on 11/14/2009, -0/+47I don't think Mexico is overseas for American Tourists.
- cogitocogito, on 11/14/2009, -1/+44It would be far more interesting to see the death _rate_ for tourists, rather than the total deaths. Total deaths doesn't give much information about the danger.
- hudub, on 11/14/2009, -0/+43This article is worthless
- acmaurer, on 11/13/2009, -3/+36Interesting numbers - I had no idea that many people had died in Mexico.
- Gemfinder, on 11/14/2009, -0/+29I wouldn't count the suicides. It's people who've lost it all, cashed out whatever they could, went somewhere so their last sight would be something beautiful.
- madcaps1980, on 11/14/2009, -2/+22Phuket, I'm going to Thailand anyway.
- MarshalBanana, on 11/14/2009, -1/+17It is high, but you have to consider that there are far more American tourists there than any of the other places on the list.
- blkrabit, on 11/14/2009, -0/+15Maybe they want to avoid paying the bills when they get home.
- DestroyedAUS, on 11/14/2009, -2/+16Did you guys put a sea between Mexico and the US? I've heard of border protection... But *****.
- williamlee, on 11/14/2009, -2/+16So much for that Tijuana Donkey Show Christmas package.
- squeevey, on 11/14/2009, -0/+14this title is extremely misleading.
- Junkyarddawg, on 11/14/2009, -0/+13So basically the take-home message here is that all countries, with the possible exception of the Philippines and Mexico, are safe, unless you commit suicide?
- djnikadeemas, on 11/14/2009, -0/+10You need a vacation.
- salinungatha, on 11/14/2009, -0/+7Am I the only one who was expecting higher numbers? 10 of the 11 countries are below 20 deaths. You could mention pretty much any country in the world to me and say 20 Americans died there last year of non-natural causes and I wouldn't question it.
It'd be interesting to compare the chance of dying on Thailand on holiday compared to the chance of dying at home. Holidaying in Thailand could indeed be safer. - wastelander, on 11/14/2009, -0/+7Yeah, this article is pretty worthless--particularly given the small numbers involved.
A real article dealing with the subject could be very interesting and not very difficult to put together. - dsfjvhbd, on 11/14/2009, -0/+7Absolute numbers say exactly nothing. Deaths per 100000 visitors would be the right measure.

http://www.bloodyhell.nl/images/map_of_american_is ... - inactive, on 11/14/2009, -2/+9when americans travel overseas, they say they're canadian. they stay safe that way.
- Baconation, on 11/14/2009, -0/+7I'm sorry, but this was a ***** stupid article.
Statistically, none of these spots are 'deadly.' - JaxxBat, on 11/14/2009, -0/+7I wonder if the US has a number..So we can compare . The total number should also include a % of total that traveled there..
- Lugano, on 11/14/2009, -0/+7Doesn't keep the Cubans out...
- Megadeth222, on 11/14/2009, -0/+6I wonder why they executed that one dude....
- joculator, on 11/14/2009, -0/+6Looks like it's a pretty popular package.
- wastelander, on 11/14/2009, -0/+6I guess some destinations are more depressing than others.. ever been to the Dominican Republic?
- JaxxBat, on 11/14/2009, -0/+6Hummm, someone wanting to go their own way?
- aqrilik, on 11/14/2009, -0/+6Accidents?!?! That's extremely general.
- balthisar, on 11/14/2009, -0/+6Good question. Mexico doesn't have capital punishment. Probably just another murder (gangland "execution").
- BeatsNWaffles, on 11/14/2009, -1/+7Buried - the title is misleading. A fair amount of deaths marked on the list are attributed to suicides, which have nothing to do with how "dangerous" the countries are. Also, while a savvy traveler will tell you that Mexico is a location where you'll have to watch yourself when you travel, almost every other country on that list is very tame and safe in comparison to others that could have been mentioned.
- gavroche, on 11/14/2009, -0/+6Im worthless
- joculator, on 11/14/2009, -1/+6Spanish-American War didn't involve Mexico
- drethedog, on 11/14/2009, -1/+5He dropped the chalupa?
- norwegianlegion, on 11/14/2009, -1/+5Girl on the internet! Set off the alarms! Begin sexism!
- wtrwlkr, on 11/14/2009, -1/+5http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/8143780.stm
As Idonteven said, it's the French who are rated the worst tourists. Sorry that doesn't jive with broad generalizations such as the ones you made about Americans. - Idonteven, on 11/14/2009, -1/+5Actually the French are rated the worst tourists.
- bahamutduo, on 11/14/2009, -0/+4Aren't statistics fun? Mexico would have more deaths since more people go there.
- ufucuk, on 11/14/2009, -1/+4What about Iraq you American Tourists?
- SquidLips, on 11/14/2009, -0/+3I think that stat and the accident stat are phony. Tourist destinations never want to admit that a homicide happened; much easier to call it an accident or suicide.
- thegrantman, on 11/14/2009, -2/+5To be fair, most of the accidents were not traffic related.
Mexico hosted the "Little Peoples" convention last year.
The organizers held a huge game of hide and seek.
A pinata vendor was next door to the hotel.
The wee folk hid in them.
The rest is too awful to describe. - dhughes, on 11/14/2009, -1/+4 Now we'll have to say we are Australian.
- d3athr1d3r, on 11/14/2009, -0/+3I was in Costa Rica earlier this year I was never in any danger (that I knew of at least) but after reading this article I'm gonna tell people how I narrowly escaped death to make it back home.
- subliminalurge, on 11/14/2009, -0/+3Yeah, the numbers would have been much more meaningful if they included at least an estimate of the total number of tourists.
Also, is anyone else a bit skeptical of the "suicides"? - atwork, on 11/14/2009, -0/+3as for the Philippines, one US citizen homicide per month in the 12th most populous country in the world is hardly "unsafe"
- TonyTheTerrible, on 11/14/2009, -0/+2why is mexico executing americans?
- combatchuck, on 11/14/2009, -0/+2It's a trap?
- Rain12913, on 11/14/2009, -0/+2"A cook prepares a meal for tourists in Bangkok. No American tourists died from his cooking (that we know of), but there were three suicides and four accidents from January to June of 2009."
Strange that David Carradine was one of those three suicides. - MikalYungHistri, on 11/14/2009, -0/+2Why is everyone drowning?!
- teebird, on 11/14/2009, -0/+2I was about to make the same observation but you both beat me to it, so I'll Digg you both up for pointing out the fallacy.
- sdphost, on 11/14/2009, -0/+2I didn't know so many people went on vacation before committing suicide.
- combatchuck, on 11/14/2009, -0/+2Right on! I completely agree with you that profit-driven news outlets are driving this country deeper and deeper into the toilet!
