- senorboombino, on 07/16/2009, -0/+27Isn't there treasure below the Mt? Nicolas Cage found it, right?
- chesstwin, on 07/17/2009, -0/+20It gives -25% war weariness.
- btour99, on 07/17/2009, -0/+20Missing number 2... or maybe Chrome is ***** with me.
- FlashBazbo, on 07/16/2009, -3/+19It was actually built as a movie prop.
- Smyley, on 07/17/2009, -0/+15http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crazy_Horse_Memorial
Check out the nearby Crazy Horse Memorial. It is still being built, and without any federal funding I believe. I think all 4 faces of mt. Rushmore will equal the size of the horse's head.
Much more impressive in my opinion. - wannaBdug, on 07/16/2009, -4/+17George Washington's nose is longer than the others by about a foot - He should call Michael Jackson's plastic surgeon.
- torindkflt, on 07/17/2009, -0/+12Here's a Google Cache copy of the article, it includes the now mysteriously missing entries (as of the time this comment was posted, anyway): http://tinyurl.com/kn8g8u
And in case the cache gets corrupted/edited too, here's the missing entries:
2. Thomas Jefferson is a do-over. (Summary: He used to be to the right of Washington, but was blown up and re-carved to the left)
10. Some, including the U.S. Supreme Court, think the U.S. stole the Black Hills. (Summary: Too long to post the political details here) - Zyzblargh, on 07/17/2009, -2/+11The new LA Times...now with 20% fewer facts.
Eight.
Right. - Ryan2845, on 07/17/2009, -0/+8but will they ever finish it? I went up there like 7 or 8 years ago and it looked exactly like the picture labeled 2008 on that wiki
"The monument has been in progress since 1948 and is still far from completion"
Should we put this one on the list with Duke Nukem Forever? - laughtears, on 07/16/2009, -4/+11dugg for #10 "Some, including the U.S. Supreme Court, think the U.S. stole the Black Hills."
- inactive, on 07/16/2009, -2/+8Pretty much the entire nation was stolen in some form. The US is hardly the only example, though, since most lands have long histories of conquest.
- bigthree, on 07/17/2009, -0/+6sure and then he would have no nose --
- Falldog, on 07/17/2009, -0/+6Are you nuts?! There's no way one page could have handled all of those awesome factoids.
- robbob, on 07/17/2009, -1/+6KKK should promote their connection to this, they seem to have a bit of a PR problem for some reason
- MatchStick, on 07/17/2009, -0/+5nope, FF gives me the same, oh and where's #10?
- inactive, on 07/17/2009, -0/+5The Crazy Horse monument desecrates the land, too- do you think a sacred mountain carved away in his image would have been what the chief wanted? Would it have fit in with his beliefs? And what about the fact that the Sioux "stole" the Hills from other tribes in the 1700s? It's not a black-and-white issue.
- Hoogs, on 07/17/2009, -0/+4Nope.
- whatthefu, on 07/17/2009, -0/+4It was originally supposed to look like this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Gutzon_Borglum%2 ...
- sully213, on 07/17/2009, -1/+5You are not alone. That's why the author is a journalist at the LA Times and not a physicist.
- Imissnaptime, on 07/17/2009, -0/+4that mel gibson has a house there?
- atlas11, on 07/17/2009, -1/+5If there were actually 10 things....

- MacBandit, on 07/17/2009, -0/+3Link to the same article posted on Digg in May. This includes the original top 10 also from the LA Times just in a much more readable format.
http://digg.com/d1sA4R - joshuaer, on 07/17/2009, -0/+3Well the fact is that some times people post thing on more then one.
- Scaasic, on 07/17/2009, -2/+5The important thing to take away from all of this is that it only takes one landmark to make tourism the second largest industry in South Dakota, which reminds us all that South Dakota is totally useless.
- LightPhoenix, on 07/17/2009, -0/+3Thanks torindkflt!
- Disgod, on 07/17/2009, -0/+3I'd love to hear what the conspiracy theories in the future about Mt. Rushmore will be.
- Nicholas1989, on 07/17/2009, -0/+2http://digg.com/travel_places/10_Things_You_Didn_t ...
Working link from a bit more than one month ago. - LomasLou, on 07/17/2009, -2/+4I say we use public funding to finish the horse's ass, to rightfully honor George W. Bush.
- KevinJay, on 07/17/2009, -0/+2"Oh my god my nose... I look like Michael Jackson!"
- JDParshall, on 07/17/2009, -0/+2There's a time capsule on top.

- eveccker, on 07/17/2009, -0/+2It's free to park if you get there very very early...like 4-5 am early
- moothemagiccow, on 07/17/2009, -0/+211. Inspired the movie "rushmore"
- lostlyrics, on 07/17/2009, -0/+2http://spot.lostlyrics.eu/rushmore.jpg http://logo.lostlyrics.eu/mtrushm.jpg http://logo.lostlyrics.eu/homelnd.jpg
- ammundsen, on 07/17/2009, -1/+3I wonder if when our civilization is long gone archeologists will be trying to figure out what sacred purpose this monument in the middle of nowhere had, like Stonehenge.
- Captj, on 07/17/2009, -0/+1Here's another one:
We got kicked off/out of the park twice last week.
Was camping in Montana for a week, started the drive home to PA and decided we'd go to Mt. Rushmore and the Bad Lands. I drove 19 straight hours there, got there at 4am and they didn't open until something like 6am. Anyway you could only see the black shadow-y outline of the faces and we sat there a bit deciding if we should wait and then pay the $10 to park or just leave. Ranger pulled up, told us about the banner protest that we didn't know about b/c we'd been in the woods a week and made us leave.
We found a parking lot that said "Overnight parking" with the profile view of Washington, we sat there a bit and goofed around, he came by again and told us even there was off-limits and we had to go. ***** Mount Rushmore. Skip it and hit the Bad Lands at sunrise. It blew out minds.
I know....tl;dr. - jthomson, on 07/17/2009, -0/+1So, why were #2 and #10 removed?
- inactive, on 07/17/2009, -1/+2WIll soon be home to the face of President Obama, the first black President ever!!
- CB810, on 07/17/2009, -0/+1Did you have to employ an extra mouse click? Are you going to be okay?
- digitalArtform, on 11/10/2009, -0/+1It was made by George Washington Carver?
- MacBandit, on 07/17/2009, -0/+1I don't think they are for everyone it has to do with advertisement placement or something.
- ammundsen, on 07/17/2009, -0/+1Maybe, but Rome was quite advanced yet much knowledge of their civilization was lost I think civilization is a bit more fragile.
