- mkwng, on 04/11/2008, -2/+10I can't think of anything more exciting (or terrifying) than to see a Boca Juniors/River Plate Superclasico at La Bombonera.
- brownrecluse888, on 04/11/2008, -1/+8I'm amazed out how people will slam something they know little or nothing about. Yes, watching cycling on TV is rather boring, but I feel that way about baseball as well. I was lucky enough to go to the Tour De France in 2004, and from someone who has done quite a bit of traveling I can honestly say this was the most amazing event I have ever seen. We followed the tour for two weeks thru the mountains of the Alps and the Pyrenees, when you follow the tour it takes you to ever interesting nook and cranny across these striking mountain chains. Your not just sitting on the side of the mountain waiting for the racers to come by, you are participating in the greatest, and without a doubt hardest sporting even ever conceived. You think soccer fans are fanatical, you ain't seen nothing!!
We would ride our bikes up the big mountains that morning, usually doing a 2-3 hour ride up near the summit. At this point there are already anywhere from 250,000 to sometimes a million fans camped out on the road. Being a cyclist myself, its amazing to have half a million people cheer you as your claw your way up these mountains via bicycle, and this is hours before the race even comes by. People hand you hand made bread, give you wine and other goodies as you ride to the top and stake out a spot. We would always find the Germans who would have big RV's with plasma tv's and we'd watch the race with them. In one day you might party with people from 15 different countries, all there for one reason. You get in great conversations with people who have traveled have way across the globe to witness this race, you meet dozens of new people every day that if not for geography you'd probably be great friends with.
Over there every 8 year old can name every 200+ rider in the tour, so people like Cheryl Crow and Robin Williams go unnoticed, so we were able on several occasions to hang out with them. We met other interesting folks as well, a few rocks stars, etc. Its quite litterally probably one of the biggest party's on the planet, and it happens every day for over 2 weeks. Its certainly a plus if your an amateur cyclist then you can ride your bikes up the mountains, but even if your not I guaruantee this is an even to see before you die.
After that trip I laugh when people make comments like Bicycling is Boring. I've been able to take roughly ten epic trips in the past 12 years, all of which were pretty amazing in their own right, but The Tour was by far the grandest, most insane, beautiful, rugged and just plain exciting trip. Here are some pics from our trip: http://www.webasheville.com/tdf/ - Aitese, on 04/11/2008, -0/+6It's funny that 4 of 10 of the events are in the US and the rest of us on the planet share the other 6.
- jspania, on 04/11/2008, -5/+10No mention of the World Cup? FAIL.
- NathanCH, on 04/11/2008, -1/+6This article is too American.
- inactive, on 04/11/2008, -0/+5Yeah but if you're French you get to spit on every racer that's not French.
- kenedamick, on 04/11/2008, -2/+7Someone buy a clown suit for whomever wrote this article - the US OPEN? PURE EXCITEMENTTTTTT
- cresswga, on 04/11/2008, -2/+7Grand National > Kentucky Derby
Also the Tour De France is not much of a spectator sport. You wait 5 hours until you see a few lead cars. The peleton then shoots by in 30 seconds followed by all the team cars and then you go home. - TheClassic, on 04/11/2008, -3/+7I think you meant Ohio State/Michigan *football* game.
- Peko, on 04/11/2008, -1/+5F1 > u. That is all. I think I'd even make a case for a flagship nascar event before indy/cart these days because of the fan feel.
(F1/Monaco is always a historic event, but I hate that track. BORING.) - diggstown, on 04/11/2008, -0/+4Yes, football... my mistake.
- dlowder, on 04/11/2008, -0/+4Arsenal vs. Manchester United
- noahhoward, on 04/11/2008, -0/+4Doesn't sound like any match I've ever seen.
- idavidcrockett, on 04/11/2008, -1/+5They forget the Running of the Bulls
- nattybohman, on 04/11/2008, -0/+4Yes, it's terrible. I was looking all around for a "Next" button. I suppose you're supposed to click the other events listed on the left side. I didn't bother.
- 11oops, on 04/11/2008, -0/+4Sorry, but the crowd experience in the south-american countries destroys that of Europe.
- ethnicman, on 04/11/2008, -0/+3let me see you try to run back and forth on a field that measures more or less 120 Yards by 60 yards almost non-stop for 2 halves of 45 minutes each with what is it 3? substitutions allowed per half. I am not saying that other sports suck and Soccer is the only real sport but in American Football each player actually moves for what 10 minutes total the entire game and the last 2 minutes can go for 15 minutes easily with time outs and commercial breaks and clocks stopping etc. As Aitese said you are horribly uninformed about soccer.
- manicleek, on 04/11/2008, -0/+3The suggestions aren't just about the event, but also the location, culture etc...
I would much rather go to South America than Liverpool - deviouskoopa, on 04/11/2008, -1/+4What. The.
- slimpip, on 04/11/2008, -0/+3I'm not an avid footballer fan (trying! but I love hoops) and even I know no other fans compare to the fans of traditional football - that's a fact.
- Y2JCrisis, on 04/11/2008, -0/+3Read the article. Anything that moves locations wasn't included because this is a TRAVEL article. They care as much about the destinations as the events.
Also, the Kentucky Derby would be far cooler to go to than any motor"sport". Horses are real athletes. - Aitese, on 04/11/2008, -0/+3Not really getting the point of your rant there chief. I was pointing out the obvious American bias in this pointless list when there are for more prestigious and spectacular sporting events happening ALL over this big planet we all share. Your ridiculously uninformed soccer rant I'll just leave to you.
- manicleek, on 04/11/2008, -0/+3FA cup finals are usually fairly un-remarkable games, but it is awesome as if your team wins.
This years final however may be different given the teams that are in it - Zm3r3, on 04/11/2008, -2/+5Wrigley Field has nothing compared to standing in the Kop at Anfield, especially on a European night. Don't believe me? Do a search on youtube for Liverpool Vs Olympiakos Steven Gerrard's Goal.
- PRMapleBar, on 04/11/2008, -0/+2Oh I know. I would definitely want to take a trip to Europe/Portugal to see the race, rather than read about it from a computer screen. The excitement factor doesn't transfer over too well.
- 11oops, on 04/11/2008, -1/+3You = FAIL. From the ***** article....
* P.S. In case you're wondering, we left out events that move from place to place—the Olympics, the Super Bowl, the FIFA World Cup—since for us travel-obsessed types, the experience is as much about the destination as about the event itself. - AlKo, on 04/11/2008, -5/+7How about the World Cup (soccer for the Americans)? Olympics?
Throw in motorsport and the Monte Carlo Grand Prix (Formula 1) and the Daytona 500 (NASCAR) are on that list before the horsies. - apio, on 04/11/2008, -1/+3great tip for the average tourist. visit boca juniors vs. river plate.
wear red and white clothes.
have fun. - diggstown, on 04/11/2008, -7/+9How about a Yankee/Red Sox baseball game?
All Blacks/Wallabies rugby game?
North Carolina/Duke basketball game?
Ohio State/Michigan basketball game?
Pick either of the hosting cities for any of those events... all memorable. - inactive, on 04/11/2008, -0/+2come to Lisbon this wekeend and you'll see it.
- jerrycan, on 04/11/2008, -1/+3It's ***** now.

crap
crap
crap
lol crap. - aguynamedjoe36, on 04/11/2008, -0/+2i think the point of this article was to highlight the sports that most of us won't get a chance to see. sumo? yacht racing? i mean most of us have been to baseball games and have an expectation for what a cubs/cards game would be like. but when was the last time that anyone on here was at something as unique as the derby? i wouldn't be inclined to see the tour de france for the love of the sport, but i think the experience would be unreal. i think that's what the writer was going for. and the olympics probably should have been included.
- PRMapleBar, on 04/11/2008, -0/+2Before I die, I would love to see a MotoGP race instead of half of these on the list, if not more. To me, that's a little more exciting than a yacht race, but that's all personal preference.
- mattearle, on 04/11/2008, -0/+2Don't be fooled, the point of that article was to get Concierge.com to pay MSNBC lots of money. That is direct and obscene spam and the article wasn't good enough to genuinely deserve the attention.
- phillipfry, on 04/11/2008, -1/+3What about Barca v Real? Arsenal v Man U? Rangers v Celtic? Not even any Aussie Rules Football. I'm not a huge fan, and for all it's flaws it can still be an amazing spectator sport. 90,000 + people in one of the greatest stadiums on earth (MCG - Melbourne Cricket Ground). This list sucks big time. But hey, it's all opinion right?
- JavertHolmes, on 04/11/2008, -0/+2The Tour de France photo is the most stereotypically French thing I've ever seen in my whole life.
- chucali, on 04/11/2008, -0/+2It's Xtreme!
- Norante, on 04/11/2008, -1/+2No Formula One? No World Rally Championship? No World Cup? No Olympics?
- EnderMB, on 04/11/2008, -1/+2Buried as inaccurate. What a ***** list! Have they never heard of the FIFA World Cup, Grand National, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Cup, English Premier League or Rugby World Cup?
- Number23, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1My wife and I went to the Moto GP race in Mugello, Italy last year on our Honeymoon. We love Moto GP (Go Hayden!) but not Mugello. It rained, parking was bitch, our seats sucked (and expensive!) and bathrooms were scarce and scary.
The best part was the drive from Florence on the Via Bolognese, it afforded some fantastic views of Tuscany and Florence.
We have tix for the Moto GP race at Indy in September. If you really want to see a Moto GP race, Indy is fantastic venue. Indy has everything a race fan could want, cheap tickets, lots of parking, bathrooms and jumbo screens, great food and lots and lots of great seating. - 13B1303, on 04/11/2008, -1/+2Indy like 40 years ago, hell any major racing event 40 years ago.
- theforrester, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1Dugg for the picture that has nothing to do with the article!
