- tomarocco, on 06/16/2009, -0/+10It's astonishing that Big Sur is not listed.
- pplant, on 06/16/2009, -0/+8On Saturday the fam and I did the Coronado Trail or Devil's Highway (formerly US 666). Surprised its not on the list.
We took US RT 191 from Alpine, AZ to Morenci, AZ - 90 miles something around 450 turns.
My 8 year old puked after 70 miles (I have to give him credit he held on that long). - inactive, on 06/16/2009, -0/+7I've only made Strasbourg to Mulhouse :/
Great list by the way. May I add a tour to your list?
Regarding the Grand Canyon, it is always forgotten that Mexico has a Canyon that is 7 times bigger; "La Barranca del Cobre" (or the Copper Canyon).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copper_Canyon
There, you can take the Chepe train, or "Ferrocarril Chihuahua al Pacifico".

"It runs 673 km (418 mi), traversing the Copper Canyon, a beautiful and rugged series of canyons that have led some to call this the most scenic railroad trip on the continent." - bossm4n, on 06/15/2009, -1/+7I'd have to add the Hana Highway on Maui. 45 miles of tight, twisty roads bordered on one side by shear cliffs with ocean views and the other side by rain forest and waterfalls.
- malloryhoke, on 06/15/2009, -0/+5gorgeous!
- wrestlingnrj, on 06/16/2009, -0/+5I love driving up the coast from San Diego to San Fran. Going through Big Sur is definitely one of the highlights for that drive.
- aaabbbsss, on 06/16/2009, -0/+5I pretty much want to print this article out and make it my "bucket list".
- pathouston22, on 06/16/2009, -0/+5I recently took 2 weeks off from work, put 5,500 miles on the car driving through New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, and Arizona. There are plenty of beautiful drives here in America, no need to spend a lot of money to get to, or to travel outside of the US.
- therethere76, on 06/16/2009, -0/+5Missing the Blue Ridge Parkway!
- borez, on 06/16/2009, -2/+6I go on tour with bands a lot, I've seen a lot of places in the world from the windows of a sleeper bus, but in terms of spectacular scenery my vote easily goes to some of the Alpine drives up through the mountains of France and Switzerland. Scary as hell though on the hairpins as the back end of the bus swings out over thousand feet drops, but completely breathtaking.
Also I'd have to agree on the grand canyon drive, we approached from the other direction than Vegas and you go past all these little canyons and everybody's like, "Is that ***** it, what's so special about that?" Then you turn a corner and it's like "***** ME!!" Talk about vertigo on a massive scale, the Grand canyon is truly Epic. - asgardshill, on 06/16/2009, -0/+4Causeway Coastal, Ireland, Belfast to Lame
A journey that many Diggers will find oddly familiar ... - Falldog, on 06/16/2009, -0/+4I wish they'd have actually bothered to get more pictures of the drive, less of boats or sand dunes & mountains for a drive described as "simply a flat white sand beach stretching into the horizon."
No Going to the Sun Road? pfft http://www.flickr.com/photos/mt_falldog/2684514134 ... - LordZeal, on 06/16/2009, -0/+4Where's the PCH? That is definetly worth. I'd love to see one of these for each continent.
- Squeetard, on 06/16/2009, -0/+4The drive to ur mom's house.
- rizzo2008, on 06/16/2009, -0/+4former US Route 66 through Arizona and California
- BashiBazouk, on 06/16/2009, -0/+3Getting federal funding...
- AlKo, on 06/16/2009, -0/+3No "Col de Torini"? No "Tail of the Dragon"? Seems like this list is for scenic views mostly.
- JJ2K1, on 06/16/2009, -0/+3I'd like to say that my drive from Germany to Italy through the German, Austrian, and Italian Alps was the best drive of my life and looks to be far more rewarding than anything on this top 10 list.
- LordZeal, on 06/16/2009, -0/+3Amen. The pacific coast highway is a must drive.
- jbmcb, on 06/16/2009, -0/+3The highway running north and south through the grand staircase escalante.
Going to the Sun highway in Glacier national park.
My favorite local road:
M-119 from Harbor Springs to Cross Village in Michigan - very twisty, pristine blacktop, perched on a bluff overlooking northern lake Michigan. It's a favorite un-official rally course for the local Porsche and 'Vette clubs. - jud420, on 06/16/2009, -0/+3I would add Trail Ridge Rd. through Rocky Mountain National Park -- Incredible drive, and highest elevated road in the US.
view:
http://www.estescomfortinn.com/Images/TrailRidgeRo ... - cleveruser, on 06/16/2009, -0/+2Interstate - H3 in Oahu, Hawaii is a pretty incredible drive, and a costly one... though only 20 mins long, 1.3 billion dollars ( or 60 million per mile) of federal funds were poured into it...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interstate_H-3 - bytor4232fb, on 06/16/2009, -0/+2I humbly submit the Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes for consideration. Amazing vistas.
- mchance27, on 06/16/2009, -0/+2How is Davos to Stelvio not on this list??
- Rethcir, on 06/16/2009, -0/+2The Jersey Turnpike?
- DrJG, on 06/16/2009, -0/+2Have been on some of the incredible ones given on this list and many many more not on the list in different parts of the world. Rocky mountains along Colorado, lovely. Pretty much anything in Switzerland is very scenic, and some of the much travelled Himaalayan routes are astounding in the beauty and grandeur (you do have to be a sturdy traveller though for many of them and not expect comforts) beyond imagination. New England is beautiful, and so are parts of the old country (UK) in a very home evoking way even when it is not your home. Some drives in southern Germany are full of lovely views and for that matter that is a country where walking paths and bike routes are kept well - people do it all the time, too - and it is lovely to go on walking or biking tours, which can be day trips or longer ones with well arranged systems for having your luggage sent ahead. Trains in Europe have their own charms, with scenic routes (castles along the Rhine in lower regions) as well as the train facilities and the great wines, cheeses and breads varieties. Upper Danube valley now or the famous Schwarzwald (Black Forest) with its beauty and variety - oh well, can't list everything. Just another one, the Keukenhof in Netherlands.
- Frixionburne, on 06/16/2009, -0/+2I was hoping to see the Isle of Man make that list also.
- LordZeal, on 06/16/2009, -0/+2I only got to do part of that drive when I was there. Estes is a wonderful park.
- neio, on 06/16/2009, -0/+1Salar de Uyuni, biggest salt plain in the world. ***** awesome.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salar_de_Uyuni - craznar, on 06/16/2009, -0/+1Adelaide -> Perth
- wipis, on 06/16/2009, -0/+1No mention of any of the roads from Top Gears quests for best roads?
- pe5t1lence, on 06/16/2009, -0/+1That's nice, but since I live in the "Southeast" (really isn't nearly south at all) this list really doesn't help much.
- neio, on 06/16/2009, -0/+1I would digg you up except for the fact that they charge you money to drive it..
- wipis, on 06/16/2009, -0/+1WTF is an interstate doing in Hawaii?....
jk - Aliwalla, on 06/15/2009, -0/+1http://www.chapmanspeakdrive.co.za/
- LordZeal, on 06/16/2009, -0/+1Yeah, not based on enthusiast driving. Cherohola skyway is pretty scenic too though.
- LordZeal, on 06/16/2009, -0/+1I'm in Richmond and I 2nd this.
- greenvortex, on 06/16/2009, -0/+1The view is spectacular, the road is windy, and the cliff is steep. It is a real challenge not to kill yourself while admiring the beauty.
- inactive, on 06/16/2009, -0/+1Thanks for posting that link, cleveruser. I had no idea this highway existed and was exempted from all environmental review- making at least one species of native bird extinct. Yet another example of how the armed forces have raped Hawaii...
- mrmudgeon, on 06/16/2009, -0/+1The article missed highay 1 in california. It is pretty much the most beautiful stretch of coastline in the world. It is certainly prettier than the stretch of coast in Ireland that was mentioned (I have been on that stretch as well). In Canada, the drive through mount Rose is quite spectacular as well.
- FauOz, on 06/16/2009, -0/+1Anywhere is a good drive if you at the wheel of a Ferrari, Porsche or Nissan GT-R
- djm19, on 06/16/2009, -0/+1I will also throw my hat in for highway 1 up the california coast. Amazing
- kylere, on 06/16/2009, -2/+2Sorry, did not read, not clicking through 5 pages for a top ten list unless the content actually requires that to prevent excessive scrolling. Don't give them free hits.
- sigit18, on 06/18/2009, -0/+0Amazing.............That's nice
http://www.relationshipadvice.cn/ - kevintootill, on 06/16/2009, -1/+1No Blue Ray drives?
- 500touringclub, on 06/17/2009, -0/+0Nice drives. The wine drive in France has beautiful views but the Tuscany countryside is just as good and perhaps the wine is better value too!
http://www.500touringclub.com/tour/wine_tasting.as ... - Dush, on 06/16/2009, -0/+0That sucks, the title had me expecting some sweet golf shots.
Auto driving is fun too though. - Faelenor, on 06/16/2009, -0/+0Cool ride, but nothing to see except roadkills!
