- blarger, on 05/27/2008, -1/+76When I have a billion dollars, I will build a Tetris house out of cargo containers.
- Pfkninenines, on 05/27/2008, -0/+54Another plus is you don't have to put all of your 'cool' magnets on the fridge anymore..Stick them ANYWHERE!
- PabloMac, on 05/27/2008, -0/+37I can hardly contain myself.
- DermDoc, on 05/27/2008, -0/+32It would still cost $1.2 million for a studio cargo container home here in SoCal.
$1.25 million if you cut out a sunroof. - Chairboy, on 05/27/2008, -0/+27Wifey and I are interested in buying land "away" and building an underground house. One of her brilliant ideas was to buy surplus cargo containers for structure. Dig a hole, bury the (painted w/ corrosion/water protection like tar or something) containers on a bed of gravel, linked together.
The small living spaces weren't super attractive until we realized we could use them as outer walls for storage/small rooms as needed (8.5'x40' is kinda narrow, even if 40' is long) to support an inner area, and the inner areas could be roofed w/ beams and dirt as appropriate.
Advantages include much lower heating/cooling costs. A dehumidifier alone would probably be enough for super comfie temps year 'round if it's deep enough. Run 3' corrugated drainage pipes between clusters and to the edge of the property for escape tunnels/utility and we've got our own homebrew Jeffries tubes whynot. Put a tiny little "coffee hut" sized house on top with a big lawn (if a fake foam 'rock' hill isn't available)...
It's on the "to do" list w/ engineering input. - inactive, on 05/27/2008, -0/+25A solution to the problem of the homeless?
- ijake, on 05/27/2008, -0/+21Once again, weburbanist succeeds in whetting my appetite with good industrial architecture, only to leave me with a big, "***** you" with their piss poor image quality and lack of links to images worth looking at.
- babychen, on 05/27/2008, -2/+17If they could find a way to do some ultra cheapo container houses, it might be good fit for Africa and Asia.
- Czechxican, on 05/27/2008, -7/+21Am I the only one who thinks living in these would actually kinda suck?
- sterntastic223, on 05/27/2008, -0/+13And that much for a 1 bedroom apartment here in New York.
- archer104, on 05/27/2008, -2/+13Just please make sure that there is a space between each row. I wasn't as careful and that's how my family got crushed into goo.
- netfool, on 05/27/2008, -4/+14They use these to house troops in Iraq (probably Afghanistan to). The ones we lived in were pretty nice, especially compared to what we were living in before. They had linoleum floors, painted walls, windows & blinds, *great* air conditioning, two regular doors, fluorescent lighting, electrical plugins .
Here's the picture of one outside -

Here's one on the inside -
http://picasaweb.google.com/derekwolson/Military/p ... - ptxyz, on 05/27/2008, -0/+9Just out of curiosity, why do you need a BILLION dollars for such a task?
- NotOptium, on 05/27/2008, -0/+8At least you got the points...
- reeder84, on 05/27/2008, -1/+8ever played Jenga...?
- inactive, on 05/27/2008, -4/+11Hardly better than my house.
- wrathbone, on 05/27/2008, -1/+6Well, you COULD insulate it, you know.
- Seventus, on 05/27/2008, -3/+8How much is it going to cost to heat and cool it, considering that it's all metal and zero insulation? Hooray for wasting electricity!
- ptxyz, on 05/27/2008, -0/+5Emo's suck.
- KingVegas702, on 05/27/2008, -0/+5me and my wife have bought land in Western Washington and are on eBay already buying containers
- salinemist, on 05/27/2008, -0/+4Containers full of motivation and common sense?
- protodon, on 05/27/2008, -2/+6Well if I ever want to make my home look like the set of Hollywood Squares then I know how to do it..
- pltnz64, on 05/27/2008, -0/+4Are you serious? Some tiles/wood flooring run $10+ per square foot. $100 per square foot is amazing. You can build an entire home for like 27 Euros.
- smartcause, on 05/27/2008, -0/+3If I move into a shipping container, can I get rid of my roommates?
- Motocompo, on 05/27/2008, -0/+3Why? In the end you could make it so that you couldn't even see the cargo container. Put siding on the outside and cover the ceiling and walls on the inside. I would love to live in one. They would be much more structurally sound, even welded together, than many houses of today. I would bet that one of these could survive in the tornado season states.
- WillSunrider, on 05/27/2008, -0/+3They are insulated on the inside. Between the container and a piece of wood/aluminum (depending on the fasade you're looking for) there is normal insulation.
I've visited the one in Southern cal and attended a demo. - SnapETom, on 05/27/2008, -1/+4Being from CA, I have to ask - how would they do in an earthquake?
- chris1234, on 05/27/2008, -3/+6wow they are looking coool
- Flamancot, on 05/27/2008, -0/+3And we shall honor thee as a king.
- norcalscan, on 05/27/2008, -0/+3Tunnelz!
- richardhammond, on 05/27/2008, -1/+4I want to see the best houses made out of dumpsters, the really big ones. That would be awkward?
- PoonGnarfler, on 05/27/2008, -0/+3Oh, I didn't realize that song is an allegory about shipping containers used in unique and productive ways. The Cascades are WAY deeper than I thought.
- nobelief, on 05/27/2008, -1/+4can it survive storms?
- inactive, on 05/27/2008, -0/+3Yeah, pack em in iRobot style.
- bakstuh, on 05/27/2008, -0/+3Being that the framing and structure itself is entirely made of steel, and assuming you have a proper foundation, I would think quite well compared to a regular wood or aluminum framed house.
- mttyd, on 05/27/2008, -1/+4You're going to live in a used shipping container, DOWN BY THE RIVER!
- faceness007, on 05/27/2008, -0/+2Snow Crash, anybody?
- OMnicient, on 05/27/2008, -0/+2They are on the decks of ships for their intended use, you know...shipping containers.
- BossKey, on 05/27/2008, -0/+2Let's see...tornado coming...wood-frame house vs heavy steel weatherproof shipping containers built for ship decks open to ocean weather...hm...which would I choose....
- AndreRollins, on 05/27/2008, -1/+3The idea is great and they don't look too bad. I wonder how they stand up to mother nature though? How long will they last in a hurricane or tornado? Not sure I want to be the one to find out.
- OMnicient, on 05/27/2008, -0/+2Considering that they are on the decks of ships in storms on the sea, and under the beating sun, lasting years that way, I think after some siding and other work we're talking longer that colonial wood homes that are more than 200 years old.
- Takfam, on 05/27/2008, -1/+3Why am I suddenly overcome with the urge to get "Poor Impulse Control" tatooed on my forehead, find a 15 year old Kourier and live in a shipping container on a floating immigrant magnet, chiseling glass knives as a hobby?
(Come on, I could not have been the only nerd that thought of that scene after seeing these) - DirtyRoboto, on 05/27/2008, -4/+6Yea, stick em' in a container and ship them elsewhere!
- spectre_25gt, on 05/27/2008, -0/+2So read up on building codes and do it yourself.
- inactive, on 05/27/2008, -0/+2I can think of better places to live, and uses for containers.
http://globalnerdy.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/ ... - Jektal, on 05/27/2008, -0/+2I've yet to see one of these that look realistic and practical rather than some artistic designer's wet dream.
Still a great concept, but I want a house, not a piece of art. - Infinitetruth, on 05/27/2008, -0/+2175 mph winds.
- Infinitetruth, on 05/27/2008, -0/+2Welded together properly, these containers can survive 175 mph winds. Most homes can't come close. Keep in mind the environment they are designed for (open seas).
- gopher043, on 05/27/2008, -0/+2how long does a trailer last? or any house for that matter.
- exomni, on 05/27/2008, -0/+2I love the one built up around the little cottage. Brilliant.
