- Gusbob, on 11/12/2008, -1/+14Poor Federer. But I think he still have one or two grand slam victories left in him
- opticwind, on 11/12/2008, -0/+9Surprise? Hell no. I love the Fed-man but his game has been weak for months now. Not sure what's going on with him.
- Lockhart, on 11/12/2008, -3/+10Damn, is Federer beginning to lose his game? :(
- inactive, on 11/12/2008, -2/+7Ever since Wimbledon against Nadal...
- Juice7, on 11/12/2008, -0/+5I wish people would stop saying this. Early in the year he was diagnosed with mono, and most say that he still hasn't recovered. With that said, he still went to the French final, participated in the greatest tennis match ever at Wimbledon, and the won the U.S. Open. He definitely wasn't as dominant this year, but I think we'll have to wait until next year to know the real answer.
- Andres84, on 11/12/2008, -0/+42 days ago news just hit frontpage :S
- Crazysah, on 11/12/2008, -1/+4Except he just smashed the first alternate Radek Stepanek everywhere. A complete performance by Federer. Don't take this loss as anything. Remember last year, at this same tournament, how Federer lost to Gonzalez in the first match and then went on to win the tournament?
- kinggimped, on 11/12/2008, -0/+3Hey, everybody has off days.
Besides which, this happened /2 days ago/, in which time Federer's already played another match, and won an absolute blinder against Stepanek. Great much but he still doesn't look his best.
Bear in mind that he's currently nursing a back injury and a stomach bug, so... yeah. - abynion08, on 11/13/2008, -0/+2Yea, i wouldn't really care about Tiger losing either.
- Linake, on 11/12/2008, -0/+2I'm still trying to understand the random Bart Simpson reference. Did I miss the news when Bart Simpson became a gauge of fashion? Or was that in the 90's some time?
He only likes blue shorts, anyways. - BrokenVisage, on 11/12/2008, -2/+4Fair enough.. but if this was Tiger Woods, who plays (IMHO) a fradulent sport with a fraction of the excitement even compared to Tennis, that lost in the first round of one of his lesser tourny's you'd probably be singing a different tune.
I'll never understand why sports like Tennis and Hockey get the short end of the stick while a slow, boring game like Golf gets so much attention. NASCAR's popularity boggles my mind too but that's another rant for another day... or maybe later on today. - Pistolero2, on 11/12/2008, -0/+2While you are here discussing these "news" from 2 days ago, Federer already won his next match vs Radek Stepanek 7-6(4), 6-4.
- DeQuinceysDiet, on 11/12/2008, -0/+2There's a weird niche of Diggers who enjoy writing smug little post-mortems about very succesful people, I guess. That's the only explanation for this story being on the front page.
For the non-tennis fans out there, let me point out that there is still a strong chance Federer could win this tournament. Even if he doesn't (I think Murray's more likely to) he's still awesome in barely comprehensible ways.
- Rapturez, on 11/12/2008, -1/+3He lost the first round last year and won the tournament.
- vilago, on 11/12/2008, -1/+3yea ***** NASCAR......give me motogp or formula 1 any other day of the week.
hockey rules! - flamesrule, on 11/12/2008, -0/+2How do you explain him winning the US Open then?
- Rapturez, on 11/12/2008, -0/+1Knocked up his girlfriend.
- BelatedHero, on 11/12/2008, -1/+2He had mononucleosis earlier in the year.
- fokov, on 11/13/2008, -0/+1I thought a few months ago he 'quit' to get his body back in shape because of mono and other injuries. If so, it isn't that great of a defeat to beat a guy that isn't in real game shape. Then again, its Federer and his off game is better than 90% of the people's greatest games.
- alexkball, on 11/12/2008, -0/+1This is not a surprise at all, Federer's back has been injured for weeks now. It was the same injury that forced him to pull out of the Paris Masters 2 weeks ago before a match against James Blake. He needs to rest, and I doubt he'll play much between now and the Australian Open in January. He'll be fine by then.
- Siderman1, on 11/12/2008, -0/+1http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/tennis/news/story ...
he's fine now...this article is outdated... :D - vilago, on 11/12/2008, -1/+2he might. i'm kinda disheartened
- kulm96, on 11/12/2008, -0/+1Welcome to digg...
- flamesrule, on 11/12/2008, -1/+2We're so used to him winning so much and so easily that when he loses to talented players like Simon, it's a shock. He lost his first match last year then went on to win the title. He'll be back on track before you know it.
- jboskoff, on 11/12/2008, -0/+1This shouldn't come as that big a surprise to anyone who's been following the tennis scene. Federer just dealt with a sore back, and Djokovic and Nadal both had early exits from the tourney - Nadal due to injury. Federer's mind wasn't there.
- kinggimped, on 11/12/2008, -1/+2Ever since Wimbledon and Nadal he hasn't been leagues ahead of the nearest opposition... though I'm glad that other players are closing the gap. For a while it was unbeatable Sampras all over again and women's tennis actually became more interesting to watch. Not often that happens, unless a hottie's playing.
- firebhaal, on 11/12/2008, -0/+1He had mono and didn't tell anyone early this year, and had to recover while still playing at a high level.
- Canuck, on 11/12/2008, -0/+1Tennis. Duh!!
- Zique, on 11/12/2008, -1/+2Or you could get some self-esteem and not be offended by everything you find new.
- INTERNETMASTER, on 11/12/2008, -0/+1video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NWSMGuRDsjI - dwalker, on 11/12/2008, -1/+1Maybe he is like our ecommony? Was on a high boom but now on his way to a bust.
I am sure he will survive with the millions he should have stashed away. - EvilCan, on 11/12/2008, -1/+1People need to realize that there will be stories about sports on digg. If you don't like sports, filter the category out.
- vilago, on 11/12/2008, -1/+1i dunno. he might be down for the count. i've got my fingers crossed that he comes back, but who knows?
- algee650, on 11/12/2008, -1/+1it's a surprise anytime this guy loses, but is it the end of the greatest run in tennis history? hardly....reached the finals of both french and wimbledon and won the us open....the problem with fed the expectations are just waaay to high....come on, coming from a guy who wins 3 out of 4 slams (3 X - 2004, 06, 07) anything less that a grand slam is a failure....
- xsecretfiles, on 11/12/2008, -2/+2He lost...the game
- BelatedHero, on 11/12/2008, -1/+1He only needs two more to beat Sampras' record.
- flamesrule, on 11/12/2008, -0/+0There is no doubt that Roger is getting older and his play will decline as a result. However, he has always been free of any serious injury. He had mono at the Australian Open and still almost beat Djokovic in the semis. He shouldn't have tried to play through it. I don't think that Roger being back to form will be the story of 2009, it will be if Nadal can stay at the level he's at or will injuries start to take it's toll.
- sanilio, on 11/12/2008, -0/+0federer is the definition of grace; he's got good footwork. his backhand slice doesnt seem to be cuttin' it though.
- mediaspree, on 11/12/2008, -8/+7Tennis. Like playing ping pong while standing on the table.
- johnroth, on 11/12/2008, -5/+3Wut? Is this about that Britney Spears feller? You kids and yer pop-stars and what have yous!
- inactive, on 11/12/2008, -7/+1Wow. Eurotrash loses to Eurotrash in obscure professional sport. Front page on digg? Sweet. Digg needs better NFL coverage.
- inactive, on 11/12/2008, -13/+5What the ***** is this about?
- abynion08, on 11/12/2008, -13/+4Who cares?
