- chaos7, on 01/31/2009, -1/+37tennis owns. ***** the superbowl.
- Gsicht, on 01/30/2009, -0/+23What a match!
- Wilarseny, on 01/31/2009, -0/+18Ugh, I was watching this match being rebroadcast on ESPN2 today, without having heard who'd won, and in the middle of it they announced the Nadal/Federer final.
I was pissed. - macp, on 01/30/2009, -1/+15Felt kinda sorry for Verdasco with the way things ended. Maybe a case of the nerves.
But, Nadal and Fed is the match up everyone wants to see. My bet is on Fed, especially after Nadals tiring match today. - infamousjr, on 01/30/2009, -0/+10Nadal had a five hour match in five sets with what... a days rest? Federer only had a short 3 set match and 2 days rest.
Well, Federer will certainly have the edge but when its 150 degrees on the court who knows? My money is on Federer. - DavidTurnbull, on 01/31/2009, -0/+8Longest match in Open history.
- BRENTON8907, on 01/31/2009, -0/+4Federer has had mono for the past season (and a little more I believe), but he hasn't played like the old Federer until the AU Open. It seems that it has receded and he can play at his best. If he plays as amazing as he had in the past few matches, my bet is on him. But anything is possible
- zanarkan, on 01/31/2009, -0/+4Verdasco has step up his game! He will be in the top 5 soon if he continues to play at this level!
But Federer this sunday for sure! FED IS BACK! - jcannonb, on 01/31/2009, -0/+3Aussie Open History, not Open. Open refers the institution of professional tennis history.
- Mtdewrulz, on 01/31/2009, -0/+3ME TOO! I actually sent ESPN an angry email about it. The match took place in the middle of the night in North America, obviously most people in the U.S. watched the replay. I was so into the match until about halfway through the 4th set, when they decided to ruin it with a poorly placed commercial.
*****. - bingostud722, on 01/31/2009, -0/+2I'm excited about this match, I love watching these two play each other!
- tfosorcim, on 01/31/2009, -0/+2I agree Fernando played brilliantly and the amount of spin he was able to generate was so freakishly awesome. Some of the rallies they had was just pure class. But even though I was rooting for Fernando, you got to hand it to Rafa that guy was just a beast he went for everything and at times even the most hardest points he would some how win (heck the guy almost fell down at one point and still played for the point and got it). Man but now I wonder what the match would been like if Fernando vs Roger.
- chillypacman, on 01/31/2009, -2/+4Can we use celcius? I mean it is the Australian open..
- sibos, on 01/31/2009, -0/+2incredible match. It'll be interesting to see them face off at their first hard court major final, but given what happened today I think Fed should win. He put away Roddick in less time, and will have an additional day's rest.
- IHaveCrayons, on 01/31/2009, -0/+2Fantastic match! Verdasco played EXTREMELY well. Nice to see he's doing something other than banging Ana Ivanovic. Nadal was strong until the end... 5 hours of play? Wow.
- xxmjumpman23xx, on 01/31/2009, -0/+2What a spectacular match. The shot-making and sheer determination of both players were amazing to watch. Hopefully Rafa can get his legs back before the finals. What is with this nonsensical format in the Aussie open where one of the semifinalists always gets an extra day to rest. Make both semifinal matches on the same day!
- chrisgnv, on 01/31/2009, -0/+2Yeah, same here. I actually watched it in the middle of the night until 7am (bad idea) and had to record the rest. I recorded until 8:30am EST and I watched it the next day, and it STILL wasn't over! The replay was on live ESPN2 and I was watching where I left off, and of course some ***** during the commercial break said "Get the details on Nadal's 5-set win". *****! What moron thought this would be appropriate?
- Ramenhood, on 01/31/2009, -0/+2No clay? No Nadal. GO FED!
- C0MF0RTABLYnumb, on 01/31/2009, -0/+2It's was a good match and at times Verdasco seemed to be playing a lot better but, I'm glad Nadal won cus Verdasco acts like a douche.
- konartis, on 01/31/2009, -0/+2I thought it was a metric hyperbole. It has been pretty hot in Melbourne...
- infamousjr, on 01/31/2009, -0/+2It was a metric hyperbole :)
- OutToGetYou, on 01/31/2009, -0/+2I rooted for Verdasco just because he was the underdog. I loved the audience and how nearly everyone stayed despite the last hour. Sadly, it might be a better match than the Federer/Nadal final for me since I've chosen to root for no one. Here's one to a good match.
- fakeplasticsnow, on 01/31/2009, -0/+2So now the decision is this: wake up at 3 30 AM Sunday to watch the final live or watch on ESPN 2 during the Superbowl. And secondly, why the ***** is the final on ESPN 2? Are the ratings for tennis that low that it can't be on networks. Very sad day when this happens.
- survivordean, on 01/31/2009, -0/+2so close... but verdasco is still the man! his twenty aces compared to nadal's 12 was excellent. ana ivanovic should be proud of him, hehe
- phreak79, on 01/31/2009, -0/+2Absolutely epic performance by both men. Fantastic match. You have to favour Federer now as Nadal will have to suffer as a result of such a gruelling match.
- homercles337, on 01/31/2009, -0/+2Lets go Roger!
BTW, is there somewhere online that i can see this Nadal v Verdasco match? Please. - flamesrule, on 01/31/2009, -0/+1Other marathon matches have ended like that, Sampras-Corretja from the 1996 US Open comes to mind. Corretja double faulted on match point, his only one of the match I believe.
- tkcom, on 01/31/2009, -0/+1Clement/Santoro French Open 2004
http://www.usatoday.com/sports/tennis/french/2004- ... - Wilarseny, on 01/31/2009, -0/+1Yea that's about when I stopped too, probably the same commercial. I think it was 4-4 in the 4th set, I should send some feedback their way as well..
- damack, on 01/31/2009, -0/+1Yeah I can't wait to see Nadal vs Federer they've both been on absolutely sublime form during the Australian Open barring Nadal being too tired from his session with Verdasco it should be a real battle.
- erich87, on 01/31/2009, -0/+1they are so far and above everyone else on the tour. it is a clashing of titans while the others are mere mortals.
- sibos, on 01/31/2009, -0/+1Yeah, he was serving great, so it was unfortunate to see him go out on a double fault.
And I'd also agree that Roger will probably get a bit of an advantage from this being such a hard match. - inactive, on 01/31/2009, -0/+1Aussie Open history.
Longest in the Open era was Santoro v. Clement at the French Open, I believe. - DavidTurnbull, on 01/31/2009, -0/+1I was misinformed by the news. Stupid channel 7.
- Wilarseny, on 01/31/2009, -0/+1Network TV in the states usually picks up the french and us opens + wimbledon, don't really know why Australian never seems to get play over here...
- mousky, on 01/31/2009, -0/+1He demolished Roddick. And that was a good thing. Roddick needed to be brought back to reality.
- anou231, on 02/01/2009, -0/+1http://tennistorrents.com
Open registration at the moment, as well. - azneggrollz, on 01/31/2009, -2/+3Rafa is too strong...even tired, he's going to take out Roger. As much as I'd like to see Roger take his 14th and possibly 15th, I don't think it'll be here in Australia this year.
- Igaryok, on 01/31/2009, -0/+1It was one of the best matches I've ever seen, but I would have rather seen Verdasco win it.
- inefekt, on 01/31/2009, -0/+1Fed played his own 5 set marathon earlier in the tournament. Ok, it wasn't as long as this one but still, in his next match he absolutely flogged Del Potro 6-3 6-0 6-0. These guys spend hours and hours practicing on court every single day, they're super fit athletes, I really don't think Nadal's semi is going to take that much out of him, it's all gamesmanship when they say it will.
- dlan4327, on 01/31/2009, -0/+15 Hours 14 Minutes. Previous record was 5 Hours 11 Minutes Boris Becker prevailing over Omar Camporese.
- TCKC2C, on 01/31/2009, -0/+1Last I heard they were no longer together.
- homercles337, on 02/01/2009, -0/+1Comcast. :-[
- mousky, on 01/31/2009, -0/+1Lets put the past season in perspective, even with mono, Federer was still able to compete at a top-five level. After all, he did win a 'few' tournaments last year. He came back at Wimbledon to force a fifth set in one of the best tennis matches ever.
- asintu, on 03/11/2009, -0/+0What a great achievement by Nadal!
- FedererExpress, on 01/31/2009, -0/+0if you have at&t or verizon dsl, you'll have access to it on espn360.com.
- flamesrule, on 01/31/2009, -1/+1I don't think Nadal will be tired at first, but after the first set, especially if it's hot like it was at the start of Federer's match against Roddick which was 112 degrees when they started and if Roger makes Nadal run, Rafa will be tired in the second set and thereafter. The key isn't Roger's forehand or serve, like in their epic Wimbledon final, Roger will have to take advantage of his break chances.
- sivaprasad1984, on 01/31/2009, -0/+0The credit goes to both the players , who played to their potential and made the semifinal a interesting for the spectators. But i wonder the final to be more and more interesting again. Hope both of them continue their form and especially i look forward for Federer and hope his current great form continues.
