- inactive, on 07/05/2009, -2/+39Roddick gave him one hell of a ride, what a final!
- IHaveCrayons, on 07/05/2009, -2/+28Hats off to Roddick, he played the best I've ever seen him play.
- Tr33fiddy, on 07/05/2009, -0/+12Absolutely. Last two weeks he has taken his game to another level both technically and mentally. Normally I wouldn't care greatly being a Brit, but Roddick is such a nice guy he really does deserve another major. When asked straight after the match about how tennis is a cruel game he answered,
"No. I'm one of the lucky ones who gets cheered"
Class act. - ScratchPiece, on 07/05/2009, -4/+14I loved how Roddick was drenched is sweat, physically exhausted and Federer looked perfectly fine
- Gerakis100, on 07/05/2009, -6/+15I love Federer... but that was a tough loss for Roddick, really felt for him as he was on the brink of bursting into tears... Gave his best effort, but a OK Federer is enough for his best
- PlasticSolution, on 07/05/2009, -1/+9Congrats to Federer, but Roddick really blew it in the 2nd set tiebreaker when he was up 6-2 at one point and Roger came back to win it. That's going to haunt him.
- alzabo, on 07/05/2009, -1/+8I've always liked Roddick, but I am definitely a fan now. No one gave this guy a chance. I mean, come on, Sampras and Borg weren't there to see Roddick win. No one in that arena showed up to watch Roddick win (super-hot wife excluded). No one gave this guy a chance and he takes arguably the best tennis player alive (cough, Nadal, cough) deeper into five sets than anyone ever has. God, after the fourth set I was praying Roddick could pull it off, because he deserves it and tennis would be so much more interesting if someone other than Nadal could beat this guy.
- skyer, on 07/05/2009, -1/+8Congrats Federer!
- indraneel24, on 07/05/2009, -1/+7I think he proved today that he has improved a significant amount in his all-around game.
- walgman, on 07/05/2009, -1/+6One half of me wanted Roddick to win. He is a great player and seemingly nice chap. Roger has had his fair share after all. However the other half of me appreciated the other great player and nice chap beating the all time grand slam record. Great match.
- streak, on 07/06/2009, -0/+3Indeed, but too much of this match centered on the serve. The serve is very important--critical--but it shouldn't be so large a part of the game that the bulk of the game play is as uninteresting as it was. Yes, there were some incredible shots from both sides of the net and a few good rallies, but not enough for a truly engaging match IMHO. In contrast, last year's final was both exciting and interesting to the extreme.
- inefekt, on 07/06/2009, -1/+4that's one less sporting record that Americans own so that's a good thing
- ontain, on 07/06/2009, -0/+2Roddick would have won it against anyone else Sunday. it's just too bad he was up against the "Greatest Tennis Player of All Time".
The match was amazing. - Mencucci, on 07/06/2009, -0/+2A common argument that comes up is who had a tougher job of getting to 14 Grand Slams - Federer or Sampras? There's another story on Digg that gives an interesting analysis on that argument:
http://digg.com/tennis/Federer_Vs_Sampras_Grand_Sl ... - darthom, on 07/06/2009, -0/+2Oh, look Martha, live action pong. What will they think of next?
- chaos7, on 07/06/2009, -0/+2and federer almost won he first set. so they both had close opportunities.
- zslice, on 07/05/2009, -3/+5Roddick needs to develop his game outside of that serve of his. Then he'll be a monster (though many have had the same diagnosis and failed...)
- kavlo26, on 07/06/2009, -0/+2Roddick played just an amazing match today. It gave me chills throughout the game, specially the second set tie break. 14-16 is a wow'ing score. haha. Good job to roddick!
- MoeDef, on 07/05/2009, -0/+2Roddick put on a great effort. It was sad to see him lose. When he played Murray, I was actually rooting for Murray just because Roddick has done poorly against Federer in so many matches before todays. But I started rooting more and more for Roddick. He deserved to win. I have not lost faith in Roddick and am now, once again, a supporter for him. I really hope he continues to work hard. His game has improved tenfold.
- anshuman, on 07/06/2009, -0/+2ya, they kept talking about his serve as big weapon and how will federer handle it, But did you notice Federer was the one cranked up aces to 50 , that was scary, I think Roddick must be like...great, keep hitting aces now, what the hell , i throw kitchen sink, federer is now throwing bath-tubs at me. (he said that at previous wimbledon loss)
- castelfranco, on 07/06/2009, -0/+2Awesome match... watched the entire 5th set. Was better then Nadal vs. Roger last year.
- yehaww, on 07/06/2009, -0/+2What are you talking about? We did better than every other country, but one.
- DudeOverdosed, on 07/05/2009, -0/+2that was one hell of a match. Roddick really put up an amazing fight against Federer, even though he looked a lot more tired than Federer :P
- MothBoy, on 07/06/2009, -0/+2The men's game is getting boring. 3 breaks in 78 games?
Shorten the service line or raise the net. - painting, on 07/06/2009, -3/+5i want to see Federer vs Fedor
- jf76, on 07/06/2009, -0/+2Indeed. That was an awesome 5th set. What a match up.
- ontain, on 07/06/2009, -0/+1i'm sure that was something his sponsors made him wear.
- sphigel, on 07/06/2009, -0/+1Federer had more Aces but I still think Roddick's serve was more effective. A huge number of Roddick's first and second serves were ***** by Federer.
- WarJack, on 07/06/2009, -0/+1Federer is indeed the best player of the world but Roddick earned my respect because he gave him hell and it looked like he could pull it off. Maybe next year, Andy.
- streak, on 07/06/2009, -0/+1I'd also add that, while Roddick's fitness is the best it's ever been, he's still not as fit as Federer. It really showed in the last few games, when it was clear Roddick was bonking, but it could also manifest itself at earlier times in the match with Roddick sometimes laying back on his return attempts.
- streak, on 07/06/2009, -0/+1Federer is both an excellent server and excellent returner of serve. Roddick is not a great returner. That's why Federer's ace count was so high.
- cuoops, on 07/05/2009, -4/+5I know this is a dupe, but this was one hell of a tennis match. Congrats to both of them.
- kidcodea, on 07/05/2009, -0/+1technique (continental etc)
- buckyballs, on 07/06/2009, -0/+1He didn't play better overall, but hat's off to him, he put up one HELL of a fight.
- MSPoints4Free, on 07/05/2009, -2/+3Federer is definitely one of the greats in Tennis today. I bet he will win many more.
- kaushalvaidya, on 07/06/2009, -0/+1I have always loved Federer, but I am dissapointed with his cockiness lately, partcularly by him wearing a track suit with "15" on it after he won. He is great, but he doesn't have to keep telling us that.
- sparrow1785, on 07/09/2009, -0/+0What a game it is.. one of the best match in the history of tennis... 50 aces served by Federer and 20 by Roddick... After a great battle it is really the champion who won it... Great fight given by Roddick and may be a future star of tennis
- ovenchicken, on 07/05/2009, -2/+2America won hot dogs!
- yehaww, on 07/06/2009, -2/+2Yeah, that was tough. Kudos for Roddick for not freaking out about it like he would have even just a few years ago. He hung in there and played tough. For as much noise as the announcers made about Roddicks service game, Federer was just untouchable on serve in the second half of the match. Roddick was pushed to Deuce quite a few times on his service game while Federer seemed to go 40-0 on most of his games. It just seemed like a matter of time. Too bad. I'm happy that we don't need to hear about Sampras any more, but I'm sad for Roddick because this was probably his last solid chance at a Wimby title. Or maybe he'll have an Agassi like resurgence in the second hald of his career. He seems to be on the right path. I just hope he stays on it.
- MothBoy, on 07/06/2009, -1/+1Nope. Fed had the basket of roses sent to that anonymous guy sitting next to his "wife".
- CaptainPedantic, on 07/06/2009, -0/+0wrong.
- abhisr, on 07/06/2009, -1/+0What a match !!!. really tough in last sets
- bodiez, on 07/05/2009, -7/+5Federer is one of the best, if not the best ever.
However, I wouldnt doubt that his Kryptonite, Nadal, got a basket of roses for not playing ;) - Iruka, on 07/05/2009, -6/+2Only the very best.
- neveroddoreven, on 07/05/2009, -12/+8The greatest athlete of our time
- inactive, on 07/05/2009, -9/+4Murray might do it next year, but until then, look at his football (soccer) skills! http://www.caughtoffside.com/2009/07/03/tennis-sta ...
- Kanaka, on 07/05/2009, -8/+3Roddick deserved it IMHO and played better overall
- DonAlfred, on 07/05/2009, -6/+1Gosh America, are you even trying?
- TrouserJazz, on 07/05/2009, -21/+4Lawn tennis? More like: yawn tennis.
