- getloudcloud, on 06/29/2009, -10/+64Agreed, in some games the grunting is so bad it almost seems like a porno
- Ghstfce, on 06/29/2009, -3/+53**Crosses another thing off the "Awesome Things to Close Your Eyes and Masturbate to" List**
Ruin all my fun why don't you? - Po0py, on 06/29/2009, -5/+50I have to say this is one of the main reasons I prefer to watch Mens tennis. I briefly watched a young 15 year old girl make her debut at Wimbledon the other day and she never made a sound. People actually made a fuss over it; calling her shy and reserved on her first match. Does this make Federer shy and reserved too? Because he is quiet as a mouse. Also, I remember one time last year my sister was in the other room and she was like "Wtf, are you watching porn?"
That and the fact that womens tennis isn't all that great to watch in the first place. - phyx726, on 06/29/2009, -1/+45Yea whats with all the racquet?
- HeDiggMe, on 06/29/2009, -6/+47So what's the problem?!
- muleskinner, on 06/29/2009, -2/+43Ok I had to look this up since I've never actually watched womens tennis... at first it sounds kinda hot, but upon further review I'm gonna have to say it'd be annoying as *****.

- Preacherman, on 06/29/2009, -0/+30A quick bit of googling provided this handy collection of grunting videos:

Gotta love this one in particular:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WVfCcBzMeA0 - anklebiter, on 06/29/2009, -0/+28The natural, vocal exhalation that accompanies any strenuous physical effort I wouldn't have a problem with, and in fact find it kinda sexy coming from a woman. This isn't that, and it isn't "grunting", it's full-on shrieking. Powerlifters screaming their way through a 500lb bench press make less noise.
- beervolcano, on 06/29/2009, -0/+27At first I thought "That's what makes women's tennis watchable."
Then I watched some of those videos...
Good lord that's annoying!!! - kaoitik, on 06/29/2009, -1/+24There's no actual porn.
- Xaevier, on 06/29/2009, -0/+21When you can't wait tennis on TV without fear of somebody in the other room thinking you are watching porno the grunting has gone too far.
- inactive, on 06/29/2009, -2/+22whats making loud sqeaks and squeals have to do with being aggressive and powerful
- MrMeikel, on 06/29/2009, -0/+20What the hell. That last vid you linked is insane. Less like grunting, more like kicking the wind out of a puppy or something.
:\ - glinsvad, on 06/29/2009, -1/+20They hit balls really hard?
- pradaaddict, on 06/29/2009, -1/+19I agree, it's not necessary, it's unattractive, and it shows poor form. If the men can hit the ball in excess of 120mph and not let out a single peep (Federer for example) then I don't see why the women have to shriek and grunt every time they hit the ball.
- kdmkdmkdm, on 06/29/2009, -0/+15UUUUUHHHHG
- a1lazydog, on 06/29/2009, -3/+18"It comes before they hit the shot. That's the first thing you hear and you are kind of like thrown off guard as a player and then before you know the ball gets past you... I don't understand the philosophy of it."
Let's see:
1) Girl grunts/shills before hitting the ball
2) Opponent thrown off guard
3) Ball goes past opponent
4) Point for girl
5) Repeat until win
Understand the philosophy now? - serif69, on 06/29/2009, -0/+14That's the sound baby seals make when their mothers get killed by sharks on the Discovery Channel.
- cliffzdude, on 06/29/2009, -2/+16That's simply an excuse that sounds fathomable, the real reason is it annoys the ***** out of those at the match, and those watching it on TV. Try watching a match between two tennis screamers in HD on a just barely OK home theater system. I've turned off quite a few tennis matches due to the annoying grunting.
- gdenne, on 06/29/2009, -3/+17The reason is that grunting puts their opponent off. It's a form of cheating. When it's silent, you can hear the bounce of the ball, the way it's been hit and the amount of spin that has been put on it. If a loud grunt covers and muffles the ball noise, the opponent cannot tell this, making it harder to guess how to play the shot. Notice how the main offenders of grunting often grunt when they are losing, but are silent when they are winning? Funny that.
- 333cale, on 06/29/2009, -0/+13http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mTZBW-Ujgw
- misterparry, on 06/29/2009, -2/+15100+ decibels? Beeotches need to shut those traps and serve the effing ball.
- ftc08, on 06/29/2009, -1/+13So, we can deduct that eating cat food causes brain damage.
- jasmus, on 06/30/2009, -0/+11But the crowd has to shut up. So is there a reason I can't return a serve, and yell "you suck" just before my opponent hits the ball? Small grunts may be involuntary, these are not.
- moopie45, on 06/29/2009, -0/+10EEEHHMMMFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF!
- inactive, on 06/29/2009, -12/+21In related tennis news, Chris Evert is a dried out bitter old husk of a woman who is consumed by jealousy (and sapphic lust) of today's attractive young womens tennis stars.
- Barbarino, on 06/29/2009, -1/+10Call me Chris one more time Jim....!
- VisualRhetoric, on 06/29/2009, -3/+12Yet you hardly hear any professional boxers, mma practitioners, or other combat sport athletes grunting or making excess noise. At most you hear timed breathing. IMO, the ridiculous grunting (especially in tennis) needs to stop.
- jeexbit, on 06/29/2009, -1/+10I would not call those grunts - maybe screams? shrieks? cries?
- roxgod666, on 06/29/2009, -1/+8Or we can just not watch female tennis at all...
- slippeh, on 06/29/2009, -0/+7De Brito has caused all of this, IMHO. She took it to ridiculous extremes.
- voze, on 06/30/2009, -0/+5Women's Tennis is boring as *****.
- crossmr, on 06/29/2009, -0/+5How about the williams sisters? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=usnMVP1j64E
- GoatMonkey2112, on 06/29/2009, -2/+7No way. It makes for great remixes on Youtube.
- xutopia, on 06/30/2009, -0/+5Some of those chicks are high strung.
- chewbie, on 06/30/2009, -0/+5http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v9DYeW0sAL8
- athrasher, on 06/30/2009, -1/+6You implied that athletes should be allowed to do anything that will make them better. I was merely responding to your comment.
- BabyWookie, on 06/30/2009, -4/+8Hey! We were talking about women here.
- stack3r, on 06/30/2009, -0/+4hey its hard work hitting a ball!
- Zarokima, on 06/30/2009, -3/+7PimpWilly and Tenareth, that's only in self defense classes where the goal is to intimidate and/or freak out your aggressor so you have a better chance of being victim of an attempted crime rather than an executed one. It has no place in a professional competition.
- DirtPile, on 06/29/2009, -2/+6There is a time and place for this grunting.
- atbnet, on 06/30/2009, -1/+4Why are you out of the kitchen?
- oldhick, on 06/30/2009, -0/+3@PimpWilly, you really set yourself up with that crappy argument... Who are we to condemn it? People who pay their salaries. People who have opinions... That's who. If we, the consuming public, don't have a say in it, then who does?
If we can't have opinions, then who can? - ceredron, on 06/29/2009, -5/+8Listen, officials and tennis experts can say whatever they want. But my main problem with women's tennis these days is that I have to ask if what I'm watching is women's tennis.
Mauresmo? Safina? If it wasn't for people like Sharapova and Mattek-Sands, I would be pretty convinced that men were on the court, shrieks and all. - iEATcatFOOD, on 06/30/2009, -0/+2digg is full of 20 year old virgins apparently
- inactive, on 06/30/2009, -1/+3When I hear them grunting, I almost reaching my breaking point.
- collinong, on 06/30/2009, -0/+2balls hit flat make the solid "thok" sound when they are hit by the racquet. balls hit with extreme spin make a brushing "chhhhhhkkk" sound. balls hit somewhere in between have a combination of these noises.
i don't think players consciously listen for the sound of the hit to decode the spin, but it becomes something part of their unconscious awareness of the game with experience. this is a valid observation. - anotherjack, on 06/30/2009, -1/+3I totally agree with the digger HURR DURR ITS SEXY CUZ ITS MOANING
Y'know why it sounds like sex with a woman, dudes? Because that's the kind of sounds women make when we make inarticulate noises. It's our range, our pitch, and our pacing. Yet, it's deeply aggravating. Why - because it's the sound of a woman fighting. It's not the sound of a woman coming and being happy. She's trying really really hard to be disturbing and irritating, because she wins more when the opponent is stunned and distracted. It's the sound of someone being utterly and completely selfish. That's why it's disturbing, even though it's really similar to sexual cries - it's a grating battle cry, and hence there is nothing pleasant in it at all. If you doubt the effect of such things, imagine her with a sword running down the hill at you...you'd bail from the crazy angry lady.
WAAAAEEEEE ITS MY BALL EEEEEEAAAARRRGGGHHH ***** YOU OTHER CHICK MINE MINE WIN WIN EEEAAAUUUGHHHNNGGL HEAR MY POWERFUL LUNGS LE ARRGH I KILL YOOU EEEEEEOOOOOAAAR - inactive, on 07/05/2009, -0/+2...and were you watching porn?
