- wilwheaton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+33Heh. Thanks. When I write these things, I use a rule my first sketch comedy writing and improv teachers told me: "Amuse yourself, and the audience will come along for the ride."
I add that to Joel Hodgson's "The right people will get this" philosophy, and you get references to South Park and 2001, because they amuse me. I'm really glad when I read from other people who were also amused. Thanks for coming along for the ride. - deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23Because a) he's a cool guy who really comes across as "one of us" b) he offers a lot of interesting behind the scenes insight on his TNG reviews c) He transcended all bounds of time and space sometime around season 5.
- NanoStuff, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23He's Wil Wheaton. If you were Wil Wheaton you'd make the front page too. Maybe you should ask Wil Wheaton how to be more like Wil Wheaton. Better yet maybe you should star in a Star Trek series and people will start listening to you too.
- manniax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Wil's reviews of STTNG episodes are always funny.
- Waiting2awake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13 I was a major ST freak, saw everyone of them and couldn't stand Will's Character for a long time. His reviews are top notch, and I have been waiting for the new one for a while now. The snide remarks are awesome. Hope he keeps it up.
- ClayRobeson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Obviously enough people to get the article to the front page. That's what the little number up in the corner means. You should check it out sometime!
- dduane, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Hysterical, a breath of fresh air...and I was one of the writers on the episode. :)
- ButtSpasm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10"Of course, the audience's suspension of disbelief is tested when Troi and Dr. Crusher walk past male crew members, and remain entirely clothed." Wil Wheaton
big thumbs up.. Since I was in my early teenage years when I first started watching TNG .. I thought the same thing, and laughed my butt off when i read it in the review. Kudos. - curseyouberkley, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Screw the haters. Wil Wheaton is very awesome.
- JohntB, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9In fact, I'm digging your post just because you said Wil Wheaton in it so many times.
- legendxx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@Legopirate
Did someone get sent to bed without their dinner? - hirak99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Man this brings back the memories... oh sweet memories! This is the best StarTrek review I've seen. There should be a rating system on Digg too... so I could give this post a 10/10. Dugg!
- bouche, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I am on the hunt for this episode so I can watch each scene as they unfold in Wil's narrative. For some reason, I'm hearing the voice as if it's read by Dennis Leary. Try it. It's pretty frikken fun.
Thanks for taking the time for another article Wil. I'm having a great time spending time reading them. - chi1thook, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Gene Roddenberry was a genuine war hero. He flew B-17's in combat. He may of been around situations that forced a change in his outlook. He was a genius ahead of his time. If given the technology today who knows what he could of done. Sure he had flaws but he invented the science fiction casts format. Roddenberry's work and characters will be studied generations from now. Bragga work is fashionable at best.
- sara77thomas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I didn't think this was going to be any good, but I loved the review. I really enjoyedd ST:TNG as a teenager and Wesley was a first crush (yeah, what a geek I was!). Wil Wheaton's review was funny with lots of great pop culture references and nice behind the scenes comments. I am looking forward to reading more - I would love to see him review the episode when the Traveller is back (I can't remember which season that was....)
- Hubris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Because you're Diane Duane, who wrote all the cool TOS books about Vulcans?
- kafka47, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Now that is an *awesome* idea. What say you, Mr. Wheaton?
- domr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Suggestion for Wil: You should record full length commentaries that people can play while watching the episode, director's commentary style. You could even sell 'em. And give me a cut for coming up with such a fabulous idea, of course.
(I always hit the mute button on the TV when Troi comes on anyway.) - gdistorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I agree wholeheartedly ... always get a great charge and chuckle out of his work ... its great. Heavy loads are sarcasm are appreciated by this writer/reader.
- adleym, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Yeah! Suck it, jerks! Wesley was right, bitches"
My favorite line from that article, that alone is Digg worthy - wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Awesome. Digg for the South Park reference in the second paragraph alone.
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7I actually enjoy Will's reviews of these Season 1 eps more than the episodes themselves in most cases. TNG developed into a great show but season 1 & 2 were just flat out bad TV.
- jccalhoun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I relly really want a review for "Code of Honor" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Code_of_Honor_(TNG_episode) Without a doubt the worst most offensive episode of all the Star Trek series.
- bouche, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You had a crush on Wesley Crusher (The CRUSHER)?
There's gotta be a t-shirt idea in there somewhere for the lady geeks.
"I HEART CRUSHER" - JEmerson, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8I like the reviews to the point that I'm not only reading it, but commenting on it with my muscles currently strangling the nerves around their section of the spinal cord. Admitingly I'm about 80% recovered, but it's still rare to find myself taking the effort required to type anything out. But when I get it pointed out to me, along with a chance to send out a thanks for making a horrible day just a bit better...
- arcangelgabriel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Thats some funny ***** there Wil.

Okay, yes, this is completely politically incorrect, and about a 14 on the insensitive scale, but I think the best thing that happened to ST:TNG was Gene Roddenberry dying.

Yes, thank goodness they got rid of that talentless hack and gave us the paragon of creative genius, Rick Berman.
Oh, wait ... turns out I'm in a different parallel universe to you guys. Never mind, forget I said anything :) - viciousrumours, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Personally, I liked "Naked Now", but then I always have had odd taste. It's the kind of review I like to read, not snobby, not over the top. Fun, light and something that would make someone who'd never seen the show want to watch it just to find out what the heck he's talking about. Good stuff!
- kaemaril, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1BBC didn't think so. They disliked The High Ground a lot more :)
- LarianLeQuella, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I find myself in that boat too. I used to get annoyed (and worse) at Wil's character, but after reading a few of his blogs and articles in Dragon Magazine and such, I find myself totally relating to him.
Wil, you're one dude I'd love to have a beer or three with. ;) Keep it real. - johnnyloser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Going back to the reiview of The Naked Now - Picard totally does a Butthead laugh!!! I couldn't believe it.
Wil, this review was awesome. Keep up the good work! - Dradis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2@JEmerson
Err.. what? - robertc1964, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1from chi1thook,
"Gene Roddenberry was a genuine war hero. He flew B-17's in combat."
-- This is a non sequitur. It has nothing to do with Star Trek. Just as if he'd been a medic in a VA hospital in Kansas would have had nothing to do with Star Trek.
"If given the technology today who knows what he could of done."
-- Is also a non sequitur. He had the technology of *his* day, and gave us, "The Naked Now," "The Last Outpost," "Code of Honor," and, well, pretty much every show of the first and second season.
"Roddenberry's work and characters will be studied generations from now. Bragga work is fashionable at best."
from kaemaril,
"Yes, thank goodness they got rid of that talentless hack and gave us the paragon of creative genius, Rick Berman."
I'll put "Lower Decks," "Homeward," "Tapestry, "Chain of Command, (Parts 1 and 2)," and "Darmok" up against anything from seasons 1 and 2.
And then there's this from the Web site Section 31:
"Berman's rise to power came after the networks began to take control away from Gene Roddenberry during the second season of TNG. During Berman's watch TNG became what is arguably said to be the best Star Trek incarnation ever (though this assertion is an argument that could never truly be resolved.) The later seasons of TNG became progressively better and Berman was at the helm the entire time. He certainly didn't run TNG into the ground through his ineptness, in fact it flourished. It was during these glory years of TNG that Berman and Braga started their careers. It was Berman who made Star Trek famous and Braga who churned out some of the greatest episodes TNG ever saw."
As I said--and truly meant--all props for creating the series and getting it back on the air, but Roddenberry was demonstrably incapable of leaving the 1960s mindset, and as such would have been the deathknell of the franchise. Had it not been for Berman at least there arguably would have been no seasons 4 through 7, and no DS9 (though that, too, was shaky for the first couple of seasons).
Though, I will grant you that most of the good achieved with ST:TNG and DS9 pretty much got flushed down the toilet with Voyager and Enterprise. - g30ph, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2I still want to see Crusher V. Q
- ukrnabe, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0just trying, sorry
- robertc1964, on 10/12/2007, -12/+3Okay, yes, this is completely politically incorrect, and about a 14 on the insensitive scale, but I think the best thing that happened to ST:TNG was Gene Roddenberry dying. All props for creating the series and whatever work he did to get it back on the air, but if he had held on to the reins for another season TNG would have died a much deserved death, and good riddance.
While he was in charge it was the same crappy, "women are pretty and helpless and men are manly and virile" storylines (with the same bloody mini-skirts from '60s for the women). I truly believe that if he had been in charge we never would have had the fantastic seasons that were 4, 5, 6, and 7.
As for Will: how could they take an actor that was so good in "Stand By Me," and give us Wesley Crusher? What a waste. - funkpucker, on 10/12/2007, -13/+2WWTJCGD (What would Ted Jesus Christ God do?)
- turnpaugh622, on 10/12/2007, -14/+1Not sure if I should digg that comment up or down. I just don't know what to do. WWWCD?
- blueigloo, on 10/12/2007, -16/+2Who gives a *****?
- chi1thook, on 10/12/2007, -16/+2Like Ensign Crusher Will Wheaton should of immitated Patrick Stewart. Patrick Stewart stayed relevant and employeed.
- revenge7, on 10/12/2007, -21/+6Wii Wheaton?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -26/+7Next Generation episodes definitely haven't aged well. Especially in the light of the new Galactica.
- Bwah, on 10/12/2007, -22/+4Nothing against Wil Wheaton, but how come every time he makes a blog post it makes the front page?
- Legopirate, on 10/12/2007, -23/+2pissed away all your child-star funds? got nothing better to do with your time then review episodes of some lame show you were in like 20 years ago.
